Hello and thanks to your forum for linking to my blog In This Moment: An Uncommon Blog of Hope & Politics
I want to correct the record. I continue to get visits sent to my blog to view an anti-Obama post I made on Jan. 19. However, I have seen no links to the pro-Obama post I made on Feb. 5. In that post, I endorse Obama for president.
You can find that post at: "And the Winner is: Barack Obama" (Feb. 5, 2008)
http://hopeandpolitics.blogspot.com/2008/02/and-winner-is-barack-obama.html
FYI, I am a lesbian, mother and gay rights activist who helped found Kansas' first statewide LGBT organization, the Kansas Equality Coalition.
To be fair, here is the post to my previous concern about Obama:

As a lesbian, I get a really bad feeling about this guy. It really bugged me when he featured Donnie McClurkin at that rally and discovering that he won't be photographed with Gavin Newsom is troubling. I don't get the feeling that he actually supports gay and lesbian anything, particularly civil unions.

Like Murray, that's also my perception.
I found the following in a blog at Hillary's website:
Obama Seeks Gay/Lesbian Vote in Texas & Ohio
Feb 28, 2008
Throughout the day, numerous GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) news organizations were discussing, often praising, Barack Obama's placement of two advertisements specifically targeted to the GLBT communities in Texas and Ohio. These discussions were widely reported on OutQ News, a news organization which broadcasts reports on national radio programming for SIRIUS Satelite Radio.
The ads by the Obama Campaign are thought to be the first which specifically target GLBT voters by a Presidential Candidate.
Source: http://connect.hillaryclinton.com/blog-entry/Wolfreviews-Blog/Obama-Seeks-Gaylesbian/300000478
I don't see this as sincere on Obama's part at all. It seems to me that he just wants votes.
I just read that blog article at Hillary's site. I am disgusted, absolutely. I cannot desribe how angry it makes me feel to know that Obama is now trying to seduce gay voters in Ohio & Texas. He is SHAMELESS. He will stop at nothing to score votes. He waill say anything, do anything, just to get your vote. How can intelligent, thinking people fall for this propaganda?
Here's what I submitted to that blog:
This is a total CON. This man has ZERO interest in the LGBT community, other than scoring votes. I cannot believe people are falling for this. It makes me so ANGRY. This is the same charlatan who invited known homophobe Donnie McClurkin to some of his campaign events. This would be like Hillary Clinton inviting a member of the KKK to her campaign events and then turning around and expecting African-Americans to vote for her after placing a couple of ads in BET or VIBE magazine. WAKE UP!!!!!!

Here was my submission:
This makes me sick. I feel, as a gay man, it's a last ditch effort for him to try and pull what remaining votes he can by giving the GLBTQ community a last second "hug." I could care less how much he spends in his campaign at the last second to try and pull the community vote. I care more about his actions than his dollars. And his actions have already demonstrated that he's not a huge supporter of the community. Maybe he had a "change" of heart, but, I see it as more of a ploy. This man will stop at nothing and it disgusts me.
Hillary has been an advocate for us for sometime now. I hope that when she needs us most, the GLBTQ community will not turn on her. This is a woman that has marched in pride parades. This is a woman that didn't have an "ex-gay" hold an event. This is a woman that has the best of intentions for America rather than pump in last minute dollars for a vote.
Thank you for posting this information. Go Hillary!
In Unity,
-Sean :-)
Will reply more later. Need sleep! LOL
This entire fiasco just gets worse by the day...First he lured and conned the African-American voters. Now he is trying to do the same thing with the LGBT community. It's sick. He's like a constantly mutating virus that is forever trying to find new hosts/victims to invade!!!!!!

Because if we're really getting into support for both the GLBT and black community---the Klan has always opposed both of these communities.
Basically Obama's had a reputation taking pro-Klan positions.
The picture/ad now featured in the opening post says it all...Case closed!
If you are gay/lesbian, support Obama at your own peril!

The following is one of the comments to the Taylor Marsh article, "What Will Gays and Lesbians Get for Their Obama Cash?"
Obama showed his true colors in one of the first debates. The subject of AIDS came up. Sen. Biden took the high road & discussed how important it was for everyone to be tested. that the illness could hit anyone. He mentioned that he & Barack had been tested. Obama immediately cut him off & said that he wanted it made clear that they were not tested together. Joe Biden looked embarrasssed by Obama's comment & didn't finish his response. The audience & the other guys (with exception of DennisK) got a chuckle out of it. Hillary looked disgusted by Obama's comment. I thought to myself, this is all I would need to know if I were gay. In my mind he had just sealed his fate. There is NOTHING funny about AIDS or getting tested. In my community it's called fronting. When you "front someone off", you're essentially using them to score points for yourself at their expense.

I must have missed this debate, but I found the comment very interesting and telling. Obama's response was clearly spontaneous and instinctive, telling us more about his true self. What difference would it have made if he and Sen. Biden had been tested together? What's the big deal? Obviously it made a difference to Obama -- and that's a problem for me.

Well, media documentation aside - and there is much of that to support claims about his anti-gay bias - as a gay man who is pretty in touch with issues of justice, fairness and sincerity, my intuition sends off alarm bells with Obama. So not only is my opposition based on documented behaviors by him (Newsom event, McClurkin event), it's also based on an inner mistrust of him and a perception of his unwillingess to truly defend my needs and rights. It's difficult to ignore those inner feelings and intuitions.

See my comment above. As a gay man, my intuition for who does and doesn't accept me is very, very accurate. Obama FAILS. BADLY. This anecdote above from the debate is EXACTLY the kind of response I would expect from Obama. It's from a person who says one thing (to score votes), but actually believes something else. Obama is deeply opportunistic and hypocritical and therefore, untrustworthy.

The media has been getting away with reporting lies as factual for several weeks during this campaign. It is shameless and will hurt a lot of people in the long run. Those voting for Obama included!!
It ticks me off that this man can have the gall to pander to voters when he won't be photographed with a gay man! ??? What??
Then they reported that he was "chipping away" at Hillary's women supporters...her "base" oh??? I've not seen real evidence of this at all. Where's the beef??
If he comes calling for my vote later it will be too little too late! He sat by silently while the most heinous remarks helped him to get where he is. I don't know HOW any woman or anyone in the gay community can vote for him! It's just shameless the way he has so little credibility but, somehow hoodwinks people!
He has this ability to get some people to flat line and that's NOT a good thing!

Is this a JOKE?
Any gay or lesbian person who supports Barack Obama is a complete FOOL! As a gay man, I have a very good sense for those who do and do not genuinely accept me and for those who will and will not genuinely fight for my EQUAL rights. Obama FAILS badly.
1) Inviting anti-gay homophobe McClurkin to his campaign events in Oct 2007. I mean, that would be like Hillary Clinton inviting a member of the KKK to her campaign events - can you imagine the hysteria that would result? How dare Obama invite this man to his events and than claim to be a unifier?! NO WAY!
2) Add in the story from 2004 when Obama refused to be in a photograph with the Mayor of San Francisco, who at that time was authorizing same sex marriage, and it's not looking good for gay rights. Obama is so politically opportunistic that at that time he obviuosly concluded that being photographed with a pro-gay-marriage Mayor was not in his best interests. Nice. I won't be asking Obama to fight for my equal rights.
3) Doing NOTHING for LGBT rights/issues and than shamelessly throwing a few "vote for me" ads in gay/lesbian publications at the last hour and hoping that enough uninformed voters would fall for it! WRONG!
GAY? LESBIAN? DO NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA!
WHY is the NY Times representing the views of ONE person as though they represent the entire gay/lesbian community!?! A sample of ONE! That's like me writing an anti-Obama piece and your newspaper presenting it as though all gay/lesbian people think the same way! How is this responsible journalism? In California and NY, Clinton received the majority of the gay/lesbian vote and she did so for a reason - because any informed gay/lesbian voter knows that Obama is an opportunist and is interested in courting LGBT people at the last hour for one reason and one reason only - VOTES!! Surprise, surprise...Sorry. Not happening.

Hi and welcome!
I'm just wondering, do these same friends send you articles about Obama, (the vast majority of which we know are biased in favor of him), to legitimize their own support?
No, most of his supporters don't look past the positive media headlines and take them as gospel. And my friends are supposedly the "educated" ones. (one of the things that burns me is saying that Hillary's fans are ignorant hillbillies and obama's fans are educated brainiacs... hence my user name "trading wine for beer"... the "uniter" divides classes)
I have to admit, that I'm so focused on Hillary becoming our next president, that I know a lot of my friends/Obama supporters role their eyes when I get going. They are coming around slowly. They are starting to see Obama's pedestal drop a few inches. Unfortunately, most of these people have already voted for him. (I live in Iowa and most of my friends are in Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin).
With the repubs crossing over to vote against Hillary, added to the folks with "buyer’s remorse", to me, this means that even if the super delegates "decide" the election, Hillary still clearly wins. But of course, the Obamamites won't see it that way.
It drives me crazy to hear people say that Obama is the one exciting droves of people to come out and vote and tons of people excited about the election. If that were the case, he'd be winning by landslides... like McCain did with his party. No, Hillary is exciting just as many people! Hello!!! They are neck in neck really. (and if the repubs have been voting "against" Hillary by voting for Obama, that tells me she's really in the lead if this were a true democracy). Living in Iowa, I know that most of the republican districts went for Obama. Peculiar huh??
Way off topic... but it's really all connected. He has all factions of voters snowed... I just hope that people don't take too much more time "coming around" off of their Obama induced stupor.

I was asked for help in writing a letter for the LGBT community for the Central Coast Hillary 08 in California. I am a Veteran who was asked to work for Navy Satellite Weapons Targeting. I turned that down for two reasons: first, I did not want to be responsible for killing people in a war and second, I did not want to risk Ask Don't Tell if I did not agree and were to became a whistle blower. I have attended the Veterans For Peace Conferences, did speak with other Veterans. However, I have not done research on Obama's policy on LBGT. Can I get some suggestions, a bullet point list of the things he has said and done to validate my belief that he is about to make LGBT-Gate Promises?
TIA.

I would suggest reading through the articles in the opening post of this thread. His track-record with LGBT community is very bad. Only recently has he started to court LGBT voters and we all know why that is so...Opportunism to get your vote. He has demonstrated ZERO willingness to advocate for the rights of LGBT people and conversely has behaved in ways which have been highly offensive to LGBT people - eg refusing to be photographed with the mayor of SF who was authorizing gay marriages in 2004, and inviting a known homophobic bigot to his campaign events in Oct 2007. No way.

That Hillary Clinton is a kick arsenick femme fatale of her own nurdy kind. She only gets hotter and hotter. Hillary is from the same generation as Aretha Franklin when women were taking a stand for R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
Drop the First Lady bit: that is an insult to Hillary Rodham Clinton's real intelligence. She was a leader who was inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr. among other leaders in her youth. After his assination in 1968, in college, she negotiated between students and faculty in which more African American faculty resulted. As a student at Yale Law School in 1973, she volunteered time to do free legal services at New Haven Legal Servives for people who were poor. In 1977, she co-founded Arkansas Advocates for children and families. As chair of Rural Health Advisory Committee for Arkansas in 1979, she expanded medical facilities in the poorest areas without adding doctors fees.
Hillary Clinton supports repealing the Ask Don't Tell policy so that women like me do not need to be afraid of serving the military justice system ten year prison sentence for serving our country. I would be retiring in a year if I had risked protecting our country while rising up the chain of command inside national security in exchange for my freedom to love outside the top secret box.
Hillary Clinton:
Fought against Federal Marriage Amendment
Supported anti-hate crimes legislation
Fought for AIDS funding and access to services
Supported equal benefits for federal employees
Participated in numerous LGBT events
Secured support for the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center
For those decades that I marched, and those years I marched topless so that you all could be free, please do not Dis' My First Lady President.
Recall what Jack said, "There is nothing sexier than saluting a women the first thing in the morning." And, hey, I should know. I turned down a national security clearance for navy weapons satellite targetting before nine eleven.

I am so glad I decided to throw myself into this forum.....Murray, you share many of the same thoughts as I do and this is another one of those times.
Living in the Sacramento area I have known about the fundraiser and Obamas words to Brown about not wanting to have his picture taken with Newsome. It was one of the very first warning signs that my partner and I noticed.
Thank you for this thread. I hope.....I wish, that those outside the LBGT community will read these posts. Understand that while Obama makes grand speeches about Race.....what he feels about the gay community says even more about what he feels about Sexuality and community!

The administrator at a site that I frequent posted a kind of personal attack on my family as a reply to my posting that "Throw Grandma Under the Train" Picture that I created for a thread here.
I wont go into all of what he said, but the quote about my family is in my reply. While it is not horrible it was pretty prejudiced. I wanted to share it on this thread. These are the tactics Obama supporters use to rile us up.
First of all, while that post was heart warming, this part "You've never had a family member or someone close to your family show any signs of hatred or slander towards your homosexuality then. Is it that or just the fact that you refuse to disclose it? In either case it is certainly your right." is rather personal and very insulting. You don't know my family, so please do not judge them on that level....becuase my family has always been very supportive of me and Jeff.
My Father was concerned about my happiness when I was 17 and concerned that I didn't bring any girls home. This John Wayne type man, with years of hardtimes and a history of being stepped on by his superiors because of his race didn't hasitate to tell me if I was not straight it was OK with him. That all he cared about was my being happy.
My family thought it best not to tell my Mother and so I didn't untill I was 40 years old. When I did she just said "Of course she knew I was gay for years." Your 40 year old son doesn't live with the same guy for nearly 20 years and not notice these things.
Even my hardnoised brother that I barely get along with likes my spouse and even took his suggestion and entered the Department of Corrections as a career.
Even my siter who lives a life many here would critisize for it's effects on the war in her official capacity in DC has been supportive of me. Even when we were debating "Don't ask, Don't Tell" before it was enacted.
No Eric, my family, a very Catholic group did not ever show signs of Hatred or slander towards my homosexuality. So please do not attempt to judge them. My family and I are as close as we can be with the seperation of a hundred miles and completely different lives.
We were not well off either. 5 kids for a military family thrust into the mainland after 15 years overseas was hard for my parents. My father had to buy a house and my mother had to get a job.
Being olive skinned we were all thought to be Mexican in Central California.....and let me tell you, it's one thing to be discriminated against for who you are but another thing entirely when the ignorance is so thick they can't even get your nationality right to hate you.
I was picked on very heavily all through elementary school but I made it change when I went to highschool. I put my foot down and stook up for myself. That doesn't mean I wasn't the subject of harrassment. I was a geek and a sci-fi nerd. My high school newspaper featured a front page news article about my friends and I entitled "Geeks". I didn't just stand my ground.....I spent months getting on to that paper to make changes. I replaced that idiot that wrote that article. 2 years later I was awarded top staffer for the entire valley in 1980.
I have gone through life fighting not just for myself but for others as well. Supporting Women's rights as well as gay rights. Working in Los Angelos at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center the summer of 1982. I stepped out of my office to a News Conference that was the official LA Gay community response to the discovery of the new desease "Aids". I volunteered so much at that center that the Director was the one to give me that job. This man became the Nations first openly Gay Mayor of West Hollywood. I owe him and his partner (who was my direct supervisor) a lot. When I was sick they gave me money to buy medicine. When I was ready to go home they paid my way back to Central California. My life is not an easy life for sure.....but there have been many people willing to help me because they felt I was worth it. I associated myself with these people for one reason. I believed they stood for the same things I did.
I have encountered people that didn't like me for being gay, for not being white and for many varied reasons....the biggest being that I work to hard when others just squeak by.
The problem I have with Obama is he is two faced. He panders to the Gay community for their vote but doesn't want to be photographed with their biggest supporters. Something he said to Willy Brown at a SF fundraiser about Mayor Gavin Newsome. Obama has had "cured" homosexuals at his rally's and I for one can put two and two together.
When Obam talks about prejudice and race he is talking about a specific group not the group I belong to. He has lied to get to where he is in life and has been connected with some of the dirtiest political machinery in America. He is has an agenda and it does not include me.

It doesnt include me either...nor a lot of people...
And his agenda includes African-Americans only to the extent that he can score votes from them...

Exactly. He has no genuine interest in the pursuit of social justice for gay/lesbian people. None. And I found his recent pandering for votes from the LGBT people a disgrace given his very poor record in regards to standing up for LGBT people.

I just keep getting more and more concerned. How can any of this be excused or glossed over by the media?

Exactly. This is why some of us are so outspoken in our opposition. Because the maintream media is so shamefully complicit in covering up the truth about Barack Obama & his politics.

As a lesbian, I get a really bad feeling about this guy. It really bugged me when he featured Donnie McClurkin at that rally and discovering that he won't be photographed with Gavin Newsom is troubling. I don't get the feeling that he actually supports gay and lesbian anything, particularly civil unions.
for some reason i thought that obama might be gay, often when we lash out at something it becomes a mask to cover our own facial makeup
such as the case with eliot spitzer, here is a man who went after pimps, johns, prostitutions with a vengence, yet he became vilified recently as being part and parcel with them, and in my opinion, he saw himself through them, despised them so much because he was too weak to separate himself from it, a compulsive disorder if you will, seeing himself as one of them, yet unable to break from it

I have long worked for GLBT equality. And when I heard that a prospective nominee was attempting to claim the 'progressive' label while campaigning with an anti-gay minister, I was disgusted. There is no way I can vote for him.
It is like 'Jews for Hitler'. And incidentally, Hitler also persecuted GLBT people.

Thanks for this topic. I feel in my heart that as a woman, a minority (Puerto Rican), and a lesbian....that Obama could never represent me or the issues of the LGBT community. I am aghast at the media and how they cater to him. He honestly scares me.

REV MEEKS:
http://www.gaywired.com/Article.cfm?ArticlePage=2&ID=18614
"A spring 2007 newsletter from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) named Meeks one of the "10 leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement". The newsletter cites him as both “a key member of Chicago's ‘Gatekeepers’ network, an interracial group of evangelical ministers who strive to erase the division between church and state” and “a stalwart anti-gay activist… [who]… has used his House of Hope mega-church to launch petition drives for the Illinois Family Institute (IFI), a major state-level ‘family values’ pressure group that lauded him last year for leading African Americans in ‘clearly understanding the threat of gay marriage.'”
The SPLC newsletter also noted that, "Meeks and the IFI are partnered with Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council and the Alliance Defense Fund, major anti-gay organizations of the Christian Right. They also are tightly allied with Americans for Truth, an Illinois group that said in a press release last year that ‘fighting AIDS without talking against homosexuality is like fighting lung cancer without talking against smoking.’"
On a more personal level, Meeks has reportedly blamed "Hollywood Jews for bringing us Brokeback Mountain" and actively campaigned to defeat SB3186, an Illinois LGBT non-discrimination bill, while serving in the Illinois state legislature alongside Obama." By Duane Wells Gaywired 4/01/2008

Can you BELIEVE what they're saying over at the NY Times? Really, some people live to have the wool pulled over their eyes!

Anyone would have to live under a rock to believe this rhetoric. BO has done and said too much during this campaign for anyone to believe these remarks! It's just another pidgeonhole the DNC is trying to stuff people into. How united can a party be if it's divided into Race, Sexual Orientation, Age, Gender... if the candidate cannot support all of the people with fair policy, the candidate is not suitable for the job.

I love it that Hillary mentioned gay and straight today in her speech. Her stance on gay rights is a big reason I support her. BO is scary, a liar, a bigot, and people who aren't outraged are not paying attention. Thanks so much for this forum!

The sad thing is that they don't even want to pay attention. Even when it's right in their face, they excuse it.

According to the Wayne Madsen Report (WMR), GOP operatives were sent to Kenya months ago to dig up any useful "dirt" on Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, Jr.
Back in February WMR reported that:
“Intelligence sources in Africa are reporting that amid the post-election turmoil wracking Kenya, a three-person team (including a possible Korean-American woman) arrived in Nairobi last week and began asking questions about Barack Obama's father, the late Barack Obama, Sr. The team also inquired about the Senator Obama Secondary School in Nyangoma-Kogelo in northwestern Kenya, the area where Obama's father, an ethnic Luo, hailed and where his grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango, still lives."
In an update this week, WMR reported that:
“It now appears that this same team traveled to Mombasa and dug up a certificate registering the birth of Barack Obama, Jr. to his father, a Kenyan citizen, and mother, an American citizen.”
The article then goes on to suggest that the GOP hopes to use the information uncovered in Kenya to make the claim that Senator Obama is not eligible to become President of the United States because he was born in a foreign country. If they can't do that, at the very least, insiders seem to think it will plant the seed in the voter's minds that Obama is a foreigner even if the charge is false.

The GOP relies heavily on smear to win. It was able to beat John Kerry - an exceptionally boring and uncontroversial candidate - on the basis of smear...Just imagine what they can achieve in smearing Obama - a candidate that brings to the table endless controversy and drama!
The DNC - devoid of brain cells.

If I had to make a determination based on what I have heard over the past few months I would have to say that's exactly why Obama wanted nothing to do with having his picture with Gavin Newsome, he's keepin it on the "Down Low"..... I wonder if he even extended the courtesy of shaking Gavin's hand.....

Mark you are a bright young man with good writing skills, I think your mom knew before your dad did these thing don't go unnoticed by your mother unless their is a lack of caring, commitment, and insightfulness on you mom's part.... I think this Obama might very well be in "The Down Low" kinda guy, better yet after reading his deliberate actions to distance himself from Gavin, I'm thinking this whole Larry Sinclair was telling the truth....

I wonder if Rosie O'Donnell, who endorses Obama, knows about him?
