Yea, I can't bear to watch the guy, so update us of what he says. I'm looking forward to what happens in the days afterwards - what will Obama's reponse be, if any? He's already distanced himself from the pastor, and "cut all ties," so will he have to fear anything?

And, even if we did see something racist today, no one would care. How much worse does it have to be than what we've already heard Wright say?

Don Imus, Al Campanis, Jimmy the Greek, Michael Richards, and Geraldine Ferraro have all been publicly outcast -- some justifiably so, others not so much.

But Wright will be able to continue spreading his racial hatred if he so chooses, and no one is going to give a damn. In fact, most of Obama's staunch supporters applaud Wright for the things that he's said, and have no problem with it. I've already seen evidence of that.

We are not African American. Do you think thi is "typical" in most AA churchs? I have nothing to compare it to except that movie with Steve Martin where he was a "con man" evangelist, Leap Of Faith? I am a lapsed catholic and I though our darn masses were long (I used to snooze a lot in church, especially when it was all in Latin.) For me, all that hollerin' makes it difficult to know what they are preaching about?

Never have I been to one like this...I am AA. Well, Donald Young is looking down proudly today as this sermon was 90% music (truly amazing music, by the way) and 10% sermon.

Overall, it was a pretty normal sermon. I occasionally attended a black church as a kid. The big difference is that this Chicago church has some serious musical resources thanks to Donald Young's leadership.

Very little Black Liberation Theology today; the theme was to be "Fit for the Fight"...the fight against Satan.

A BLT sermon would more likely talk about being fit for the fight against white oppression...but they talked about Satan instead today. Perhaps the implication was that "Satan" is white oppression, but an untrained ear like mine would not have picked up on it.

Anyway, it looks like Trinity is working to clean up their act...and that was evident in today's ministry. In fact, the woman who gave the sermon today even said that "we are learning how to do it a little....differently now" as she clenched her fists to show restraint.

Black Liberation Theology was created in the 60s by James Cone during our time of horrific racism. An underlying theme is that of black victims and white evil oppressors. It made perfect sense in the 60s. But now, it really serves to disrupt progress rather than unite us.

And that's my issue with it BLT today. I feel like that theme goes against the dream of a colorless society we all fought for during the civil rights movement in the 60s. Teaching our children to view the world in this way does not prepare them for our integrated society. Obama's choice of BLT shows bad judgment for a man running on the platform of being the great unifier of all people.

Please know that less than 10% of black churches practice Black Liberation Theology.

I absolutely take your word for it. For one thing, if every AA church had been spewing hatred, we'd have had a race war already, and vice versa with the white churches. Extremists, one and all.

And another reason I believe you is based on the experiences of white friends of mine who've attended AA churches and a gay friend who's jammed at services on the piano. My own experiences, from childhood, listening outside, waiting to hook up with my AA bf after service, are great ones! I felt really upbeat, positive, and inspired...to be good, to be forgiving (but not stupid), to be more loving every day. And let me tell you, the music sure beat the crap out of what we heard at the Catholic church I attended down the block.

Everyone who attended that AA church was a respected pillar of our community of mostly Italians. And the women wore the absolute best hats EVER!! So I had positive feelings about whatever I heard and because the congregants were such well loved and respected people.

(Digression alert--feel free to gloss over: At that time, had I actually gone inside the church, it would have been frowned upon by both black and white adults as crossing a line. Jackie (the bf) and I, and our families, crossed enough lines as it was. And our family loyalties went back to my mom's high school days, where she was known to have punched out a few people who had called her friend, Jackie's aunt, the N word. My late parents would be horrified to know that I've become a racist! ;))

Really? Catholic churches seem to have the shortest masses, IMO (an hour long vs 3 hours and counting in other churches, especially Baptist). Maybe it depends on the Catholic churches, I guess *shrugs*.

I have attended a few AA churches in the past and I can honestly say that the hatemongering is NOT typical. Lively, yes (and I personally see nothing wrong with it, even if it is not my preferred style), but definitely not full of negativity.

And another reason I believe you is based on the experiences of white friends of mine who've attended AA churches and a gay friend who's jammed at services on the piano. My own experiences, from childhood, listening outside, waiting to hook up with my AA bf after service, are great ones! I felt really upbeat, positive, and inspired...to be good, to be forgiving (but not stupid), to be more loving every day. And let me tell you, the music sure beat the crap out of what we heard at the Catholic church I attended down the block.

My fiance is A/A, and we attend an all-Black Catholic Church -- they really jam there too. My DF plays sax, so I love it! But, sorry about those boring Catholic Churches in your old neighborhood. I live in a predominantly Mex/Am neighborhood -- and, those Mariachi Masses are beautiful too :)

Really? Catholic churches seem to have the shortest masses, IMO (an hour long vs 3 hours and counting in other churches, especially Baptist). Maybe it depends on the Catholic churches, I guess *shrugs*.

I have attended a few AA churches in the past and I can honestly say that the hatemongering is NOT typical. Lively, yes (and I personally see nothing wrong with it, even if it is not my preferred style), but definitely not full of negativity.
I meant when I was a kid. Couldn't eat before mass, smell of incense made me nauseous. Priest seemed to drone on and on in latin. Itchy "Sunday" dress. My mom would "pinch' me if I fell asleep. When you are a kid, it can seem like HOURS. I went to catholic school so we had to attend mass before classes too. When the Catholic church changed to english, it sure seemed like mass went fastr.

I know. They will still claim we are racists though. It is such a huge disservice to all AA churches to now have this place of hate and rage being made to represent all churches. I know they don't. Ahhh...gotcha. Yeah, mass is torture when you're a kid. It seemed like the priest would go on and on about something that sounded like gibberish to you. And yes, I know all too well about the parents' efforts to keep you from dozing off ;). I only learned to appreciate Catholic churches after visiting other churches with 3 hour long services.
