View Full Version : Tonight's SNL?? 3/15/08
I read that Lorne Michaels was a little concerned that SNL was looking biased toward Hillary. Does anyone think they'll back off from the kind of skits we've seen in the past few weeks?

There is no way that Obama's minister's message is new or a surprise - that's what Obama chose to listen to and that tells us who he is - it is frightening to think someone who has this much hate would be chosen as an advisor. So much for judgement. Let's hope the Obama supporters will think again! All of Hillary's alliances have been scrutinized for years - doubt we have any surprises. Maybe SNL will make a skit on this!

It's a nice truth serum to the crap which we're encountering everywhere else. And it had been BADLY needed during the writers strike.
Just imagine if it had run during the contests in those states, I'm imaging all kinds of yummy images.
Obama's proven himself to have a VERY thin skin for somebody who supposedly was both a civil rights lawyer and community organizer.
As I've tried to explain to my own folks on many occasions, you don't go into these positions to get the lap of luxury or an easy life:rolleyes:
When he can't take 'friendly' caricature, how on earth is he going to handle things if McCain throws more pointed attacks at him in the fall? McCain won't be as sparing in the comments.

Chris Mathews had him on his show trying to make him feel guilty buy constantly saying SNL was being so biased, then they had a segment about how comedy isn't funny when it clearly leans to one side. There were also several people calling SNL racist for it's portrayal of Obama. I wouldn't be surprised if SNL bashed Hillary today in order to give the impression that they don't play favorites.
Honestly, the only SNL I've found funny in a long time was the episode that Hillary actually appeared in person.

snl people appeared on more than 1 show to explain they were not on the hillary side ,maybe they can do a skit on how scared they are that the media is tyring to portray them as hillary fans.....that would serve the media right and we all know the truth can be funny.

The reason why we think a lot of the late SNL skits are funny is because they target the candidate's flaws. We are fully aware of what baggage Hillary has and so we have been down that road (so has she) and we can laugh about some of the stuff. She and we have put a lot of the sting of remarks about her marriage, her first attempt at Healthcare reform, her hair, her strong will and how it is not stereotypically feminine behind us...now we can be light-hearted about them. She definitely can!
On the Obama side, this is the first time that anyone is making fun of his flaws and he and his supporters cannot take it. I have no doubt that whatever SNL does, it will be relevant and funny. I don't believe that Amy (who plays Hillary) would participate in anything that would be emotionally scarring for Hillary. As I don't believe they would do the same to Obama.
He better get used to being mocked. That is what pays the bills for SNL, Conan, The Daily Show, etc. It won't get any easier for anyone who wins the nomination or President.

Yep. I saw the writer of last week's skit at least twice on MSNBC, being interviewed by Joe Scarborough in the morning and Chris Man-Crush Matthews in the evening. He said he wasn't biased. He also said, from a comic's perspective, he prefers it if Hillary wins.
I feel bad that I can't remember this writer's name. Personally, last week's opening sketch still makes me laugh. Those stills are hilarious, and the script is side-splitting. JMO.
P.S. OPTIXMOM: I agree with your observation. The Obama Babies aren't used to losing. How can they be, since most of 'em haven't ever gotten involved in anything before now. Rude awakening, indeed. Fingers crossed. Keep it up, SNL!

How can you complain about a comedy coverage? Comedy is not journalism where journalists and reporters must present the truth to public without being biased. It is strange that Obama does not have enough wisdom to understand this. Complaining about SNL coverage or messages seem childish. How can he be a president? Will he call from the white house (if he is a president) to ban all TV comedy shows that mocked him? Even Bush doesn't call SNL for mocking him.

Last week, Bill Maher actually took an excerpt from Hillary's book in which she talked about her reaction when Bill spilled the beans to her about Monica, where she talked about her inability to breathe, etc. He suggested that it showed us how she reacts to crisis and that's what she would do at 3 am when the phone rings . . .
Maher is an avowed Obama supporter.
Funny how I haven't heard ANYBODY mention the inherent sexism of his remarks, let alone the fact that her reaction to a personal crisis in her marriage has no relevence to how she would perform as President. How many men experience great emotion and dispair at the death of a parent, for example. Does that mean they are unable to lead?

LOL! No. I had two semesters of it in college, about a hundred years ago.
Sorry! :o Do you recognize the entire quote? It's a takeoff on Project Runway, when Heidi Klum dismisses a contestant.

Exactly. What a wimp! If Hillary could live thru the "Clintorius" perfume spoof during Bill's first presidential run, she'll live thru anything. Unlike Nobama, who can't even laugh at himself!

It's my hope that SNL spoofs the spoof! i.e. roundtable of SNL writers w/McCain at head of table assigning anti-FLUFF topics to each writer.
3 anti-FLUFF skits do not make up for the FLUFF luv fest that has dominated the airwaves for the past 4 months.

Think about all the less kind public caricactures non SNL people did and are doing of her for being involved with public policies.
This provides a more realistic idea of how she would perform as president.
And then all of the attacks the health care industry heaped on her in the early 1990's. They wanted America to believe that being able to afford our own health care was the worst thing!
Again, she did not whine 'how dare they criticize my public policies'. She expected that her public performance could and would be subject to comment. Our supportive comments weren't the only ones which she realized that she was going to hear as a result of taking those positions.

Obama appeared on SNL last October in a skit that made fun of Hillary and Bill. I don't remember Chris Matthews talking about that. I suppose, it was alright to do. NOW, he's protective if Obama gets "picked on".
I wrote to HBO concerning Bill Maher's comments. I told them I'm not happy with a pro-Obama program on their network.

I must say that what that guy said was an insult. Hillary has been a Senator for 7 years in New York besides a million other things she has done.
When that guy put her down as only having been married to someone with experience that was just no good.

This country president is being picked by the Main Stream Media. Like their coverage on Obama paster has been minimal comparing to any other presidential candidate. They spend more time covering which hollywood stars hosting fund raising for Obama. It is very disappointing.
Just like the amount of airtime being placed for a presidential campaign, the more positive airtime you get, the more votes you get. When the media bias toward Obama, the voters start to believe it as facts. It is not right.
In the end, when we choose the wrong democratic nominee, we end up getting the wrong president in November. We all lose.
Look at what they did in 2004? We end up living with Bush's second term.
Shame on the MSM (Main Stream Media).

I agree. In fact, I had seen his last three shows in a row at the Joint at the Hard Rock, here in Vegas, but I didn't go this time (this weekend, in fact). I donated the money to Hillary instead (before I knew of this site...sorry, Murray!). Maher recently wrote a Spitzer-related blog on HuffPost. WHAT A JERK! It was totally wrongheaded, and most people, including me, let him have it.
His take on marriage is getting extremely wearing anymore, and I wrote a response to that effect. Even men were taking him to task. He's never been there, done that. Doesn't have a clue. And if you look at the women he's dated, it's no wonder he's a sexist idiot who can't experience more than sexual intimacy. The guy needs to expand his horizons and his worldview.

Regarding keeping it in the media, there was a post on the official Hillary site about the need for people to write letters to the editor in the upcoming primary states. hillaryresponders.com (not part of the official site) has some suggestions about writing letters. I wonder whether this would be an acceptable forum for keeping preacher gate in the news. Would not want to do anything to hurt the campaign, but since Hillary has wisely chosen not to respond to the Wright issue, possibly we could. Would love to hear thoughts. Good idea or not?

The only good thing about SNL tonight was the fact that the sketch by Tracy Morgan was so poorly written, badly delivered and just not particularly funny. So most of it won't have legs on anything substantive.
But "Bitch" has gained some new life as an insult. And I say we have to take it back again!
Comedy works when you take a kernel of truth about someone and exaggerate it or turn it on its head. Like the "old" bit with McCain. TM's sketch was pretty weak. The only comedic part was the "Who says he can't answer the phone at 3 am? If he did he'd be yo! What you calling me at 3 am for?!..." that was pretty funny.
However, while the hijacking of Tina Fey's line, twisting it to "Black is the new President, Bitch" was a clever turn of phrase (which I'm sure we'll be seeing/hearing a lot more of now),
THE OBSCENITY, SEEMINGLY DIRECTED SQUARELY AT SENATOR CLINTON AND WOMEN SUPPORTERS AS PART OF A RANT FROM A MALE COMEDIAN ON NATIONAL TELEVISION IS TOTALLY UNNACCEPTABLE !!!!!!!!!
And therefore, we have to take it back.
Imagine a white female comedian shouting out a rant at Senator Obama and his supporters saying, "White is the new President, N****R!"
Would it be funny? On national television? Even if two black comedians had used it in a previous skit? Of course not, it would be disgusting and inciting.
The way Tina Fey used it was totally different! That's why we liked it and coopted it. What Tracy did reminded me of the Michael Richards disaster with "N****R".
I'm sure it was crafted in such a way as to make it vague as to whether the "bitch" slur was directed at Tina or Hillary or women in general , but the intent was obvious and as I said, I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more of it. And if it becomes part of the lexicon towards Senator Clinton and women,
Tracy Morgan/SNL/NBC will have the distinction of being the source.
But this, I keep forgetting is the high-minded, unifying mentality of Obama supporters who think "Bro, not Ho" is an appropriate slogan. I guess this is part of change we can look forward to.
When is the principled Senator Obama going to denounce and reject the free use of such reprehesible, derogatory, sexist, misogynistic language by his supporters as actual campaign slogans?
The same rules apply to the "N" word and the "B" word. I can call myself that but you can't!
Why is correctness applied only to racism and not sexism?! All this proves is:
BITCH REALLY REALLY IS THE NEW BLACK
and I take it back!

I just watched Tracy Morgan's outburst on the SNL web site and I am completely baffled. Where were the jokes? It was not even remotely funny. It sounded like one of those tirades that Obama supporters would post in the comments section of cnn.com. I guess the SNL producers were getting worried about being seen as pro-Hillary by the public and wanted to create some balance... but this is the best they can come up with???
