Losing Jim Webb as a VP option means Barack Obama might have lost his best, and perhaps only, chance of turning Virginia blue this November.
Of all the possible running mates, Sen. Webb was the most intriguing. Here was a Vietnam combat veteran and former Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan who had unseated a Republican incumbent in a state Democrats hope to win this year. An economic populist, Webb has proven appeal with the blue-collar voters in Virginia whom Obama failed to win in his contest against Sen. Hillary Clinton. Impeccable national-security credentials and working-class appeal -- the two very qualities Obama lacks.
Yes Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus! ;)

And when obama loses VA, Webb and his entire state better prepare to be branded as, yes, you guessed it - RACISTS

Has anyone noticed how many times people have pulled their names out of contention for the VP spot? Seems like nobody's jumping at this "opportunity."

Let's see... IF he got the nomination and he gave veep to all three of these, he would still loose! PUMA!!

As a resident of Virginia, I can say that I feel fairly confident that Virginia will be red, if Obama is the nominee. However, this would not happen, if Hillary is the nominee. Virginia is made up of military bases on the east coast, Clinton Democrats in the southwestern part, and Republican leaning in the center. All of these areas will be red for McCain. The inner cities and college towns, unless they wake up from the kool-aid stupor, will probably go to Obama, but the biggest population will not.
An excellent ticket, in my opinion, would be Clinton-Warner (Mark Warner, former governor and running for Senate). Virginia would definitely be blue then.

I'm from Virginia too, and while I voted for Webb last time, I'm not sure I will next time. I'm not too pleased he is supporting Obama, and even less pleased with his response about McCain when Wesley Clark went on the attack. I am concerned Obama might take Virginia because of the new voter registrations they are bringing out and the heavy African American voting block which will definitely come out in droves. We will have to see, I guess.

Glad to see another Virginian on the board!
I voted for Webb also, but will have to watch and wait to see what happens between now and when he is up for re-election again. I know, absolutely, that I will never vote for Rick Boucher again. He supports Obama and has drank the kool-aid in excessive quantities, in my opinion. His reasons are straight from the Obama "playbook." The 9th District, with a very few exceptions, went for Hillary, but he has continued to support Obama. Therefore, I no longer want him as my representative in Congress.
Yes, I am also concerned about the new voter registration drives. I checked on the Obama's website (Yuck!) for Virginia and found a bunch, plus pictures of the events on July 4th (Double Yuck!). I was even surprised at the one in Dublin, not exactly where I would expect one. But, there is a community college there and not far from Radford and VT, which is his target audience. You are right about the AA vote, but the suburbs surrounding the cities, like Richmond, will vote Republican, I think. I have family in Richmond and that is the feeling that I get.

Agreed! I thought Jim Webb would have helped him more than anyone. Would love to know what the real story is there!

I'll "dig" around in some places to see if I can find out anything. Will post it here, if I find anything. :D

No state can be too confident, but the fact that someone may support BHO now, doesn't mean they'll vote for him at convention. We've had how many not wanting to be his vp? Somehow, this is giving us a heads up.

My Father-in-Law lives in Williamsburg and my Husband is a Hokie alum.
Both registered Democrats. I don't talk politics with either of them because it is just better for family relations (considering my brother-in-law maxed out for Obama).
I am just holding out for another Icon in the African American community to slip up on their true feelings about Obama like Jesse Jackson did.

Virginia is probably just realizing that CHANGE is just skin-deep but HOPE-HATE campaign of winter is what carried the season. FISA flop is a big hit.

I live in northern VA, yes its very diverse, BUT the entire eastern part of the state is HEAVY with military, either you work for the DOD or a DOD contractor, and yes, the pentagon is located in VA. VERY MILITARY AND VERY PATRIOTIC!!!
They will not vote for someone who is friends with a terrorist like Bill Ayers who is "unrepentent about trying to bomb the pentagon and wished he did more.. "
NOPE.. VA WILL NOT GO BLUE!!!!
COUNTRY BEFORE A SHAM OF A PARTY!!!
Hillary or then Mccain!!!

I never lived in VA but I lived in DC/MD and have friends who live there. I've spent a lot of time in Northern VA and I know VA is a RED state, it's just been that way for a long time. When I heard about the emphasis BO was putting on VA and trying to get a VP from there, I just scratched my head. I know he won it in the primary, but I don't see him winning it in the fall. NoVA isn't the entire state and they get outnumbered by Southern and Eastern VA.
Btw, I like VA, just always got lost whenever I was coming home on 66. Ugh, hate that highway..lol.
