View Full Version : (7/11/08) No Fry Zone? Food Fight in Denver Continues (ABC)

This fight over fried food or no fried food at the Convention in August just gets funnier and funnier. Now, "A Councilman Says the Proposed "Green" Convention Catering Initiatives are Prejudicial Against Southern Fare".

Personally, I think the DNC is acting like a bunch of elitist snobs, as usual, but that's just me.

The heated debate in Denver this summer is not about Obama versus McCain. Rather, it is about old fashioned Southern fried food versus lean and green lighter offerings. The controversy surrounding the food selection for the 2008 Democratic Convention continues, with one councilman claiming the Denver Host Committee's catering proposal is discriminatory toward southern specialties such as fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, and fried okra.

The host committee's food police are going too far," said Denver Councilman Charlie Brown. "They've turned into food control zealots."

The North Carolina-born councilman said the catering proposal not only includes a ban on fried food, but also a mandate for colorful, organic food. He also speculated the host committee's catering requests could be harmful to the Democratic Party's image, especially in the South.

"We need to work together to keep convention costs down, but officials seem more concerned about the green on the table than the green in party coffers," said Brown. "I don't believe this is the fiscally responsible message the party wants to send to America."

He likes to perpetuate myths and put out erroneous comments," said Chris Lopez, Communications Director for the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee. "Denver is one of the healthiest cities in the nation, and this proposal was not an outrageous one."

Lopez said the catering Request for Proposal, or RFP, which was distributed to local caterers in May, was not an actual contract, and did not in any way forbid fried fare.

"There is not a ban on fried food, and there never was," said Lopez, who refused to provide a copy of the proposal to ABCNews.com.

But the proposal was obtained by ABCNews.com and it indeed does say that "no items are to be fried". Not only should fried fare be prohibited, says the proposal, but preference will be given to vendors who comply with the "Lean and Green Criteria."

Page nine of the proposal states: "In support of the DNC's "green" mission to planning an environmentally responsible convention, preference will be given to vendors that have a proven commitment to green practices and that consider and minimize the life-cycle environmental impacts of catering."

Also listed in the proposal, are the Greening Initiative's Lean and Green Criteria, which include:

Half of the meal or (50%) of the plate is made up of fruits and/or vegetables.

No items are to be fried.

A colorful meal – include at least three of the following five colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple, and white. (Garnishes not included)

70% or more of ingredients be precooked weight are certified organic and/or grown/raised in Colorado.

70% or more of ingredients by pre-cooked weight are fresh and not pre-processed.

"They call it the 'lean and green' menu, but I call it the 'green and mean' menu," said Brown. "I've been to a political convention, and I can assure you the delegates do not go to the political conventions to eat spa food."

I know! Sadly, this is no joke. Could anything possibly be more indicative of how elitist and out of touch they are? And what an utter waste of money!

Does "The Food" have to be delivered in a "Hybrid" car or by a bunch of old, out-out-of-shape guys on bicycles???

Will they be serving "The Food" on real plates with real silverware and real glasses or will they be using un-environmentally friendly disposable plates, cups, and silverware or will you just "hold out your hand" and they will lay some vegies on it??? (or open your mouth and receive a squirt of juice (hand squeezed, no preservatives) from a big dispenser???)

Will there be "mandatory" pilate or aerobics glasses after every meal???

What are we...A bunch of kids who the DNC & King Obama can lecture too and restrict the diet of??? And lets not forget that "Certified Organic" just about triples the cost of a piece of Broccoli or a head of lettuce. What the hell, it's only OUR money!!!

Well geez, this is SO important! LOL!!

Honestly, I must fess up. I'm a southern girl living in Canada. There is NO soul food here and my friends at home will attest *as in meet me AT the airport with some fried green tomatoes or ELSE* that I throw all my diet out the window and eat ONLY soul food at home.

So, there goes my plans for Denver greens and cornbread fest. Oh wait! Neither are "fried" maybe I can go to this debate and ......lmaooo!

This is C.R.A.Z.Y.!!

These people kill me. We better make sure they don't think a "roll" call has to do with buns.:p

I seem to recall reading of hearing somewhere that they also wanted special organic/biodegradable plates, cups, etc., MADE IN THE USA, of course, but were having trouble finding them because they don't make those things here and certainly not in China.... And, no, I'm not kidding.

I'll see if I can find that story anywhere.

And shall we wager on how much more that stuff is going to cost and already deficit plagued DNC? No wonder they need 5 million more dollars. I will bet that the vendors are all going ballistic about the moves, requirements, dictums of the Obama "I am so superior" DNC.

Just curious...does the DNC typically dictate the menu? Don't they have better things to do?

Geez....even at Disney World you get a choice...

OMG!!! Are they truly this isolated in their own little world and sooo out of touch with the American people that this is what they spend their time worrying about? Are the biggest problems facing us what they will be eating. It seems like everytime I think they could not do something more to shock me, they do... but i am sure the annointed one has to have the right color meal. lol so laughable.

That was part of whatever I read or heard on the radio - that not only are these special plates, cups and utensils hard to find, but they are incredibly expensive. Translation - those on a tight budget can't afford them, and last I heard, the DNC didn't have the cash....

Honestly, when you think about how much money obama has spent and the DNC will spend in total, its pretty disgusting how many mouths it would feed, or how many insurance premiums it would pay for the uninsured, etc., need I go on?

It is one of the CHANGE promised. You cannot HOPE for much more.

Forget the past.
