View Full Version : Feb 7 (2008): "If Obama Was A Woman - Part 1 & 2"
These are 2 excellent articles which highlights the tremendous disadvantage Hillary is at in competing against a man for the Democratic candidacy.

On Wednesday night, as I watched CNN continue to spin this election, I was absolutely floored. Anderson Cooper, who I generally respect since his coverage of Katrina, showed a picture of a woman in a voting booth who is trying to exercise her democratic right while holding a young child. The child is crying and squirming in his mom's arms. Anderson's caption for the photo: "Please mom, don't make me vote for a girl. I don't even like girls." Imagine for a moment what would happen if Anderson Cooper referred to Obama as Boy? He has just referred to Hillary Clinton, a candidate for president and a 60 year old WOMAN as a girl. I urge you to write to CNN and demand an apology from Anderson Cooper and CNN. This overt sexism cannot be abided!
Best,
Sandra
Yes Sandra, there have been so many instances of such inconsistent treatment of the 2 candidates. The double-standards abound!
People want to say gender has nothing to do with this election - rubbish - it's EVERYTHING about this election!

Sandra
I just wrote a note to Anderson Cooper, I for one am totally sick of all the sexism as well.
Thank you for pointing this out.

Funny: Hillary Clinton makes a factual statement about the fact that the Civil Rights Act could not have been passed without a strong president and she gets labeled a racist. Yet, if anyone comments about sexism in this primary contest we are told to get over it. Our country is so entrenched in sexism, that we can't even recognize it when it is smacking us in the face. Every day, in every medium -- from print to television -- women are depicted in the most degrading possible ways: air-headed sex objects, money-grubbing femme fatales, pencil-thin vacuums. And, despite all of this, despite centuries of unadulterated sexism, patriarchy, and misogyny, a woman somehow makes it to the candidacy for the highest office in the land. But, the media cannot afford for Hillary Clinton to win: how will they sell young girls diet plans, plastic surgery, beauty products, the promise of power through the love a man (if only she is loveable enough) when those young girls can look to Hillary Clinton and know that they can have power in their own right, through their brains rather than their beauty. So, the media overtly attacks her, spins the election to favor an unqualified, inexperienced, orator with no substance. Because, they can't afford for her to win. And, we can't afford for her to lose.
What is happening in our country is a disgrace, but where's the outrage?

I'm so glad. I've sent this information to everyone I can think of and there has yet to be a response. Thanks for sending your note and spread the word.

PRECISELY!!!! What's one way to silence the masses?? Present them with a pseudo savior (MAN, of course) who will rescue them from their woes. Hardly! If Hillary was as unqualified and as inexperienced as Obama, there is NO WAY she would even have been allowed to become a nominee! Ordinarly, in the normal world of WORK, experience and wisdom are qualities held in extremely high regard. All of a sudden, when those qualities are possessed by a woman going for the highest job in the nation, they are suddenly liabilities. Discraceful.
I agree with you - WHERE IS THE RAGE? A large segment of men can't tolerate the idea of being led by a WOMAN - their fear of Hillary incites rage in them - unjustified rage. And disturbingly, it's not just men who are guilty of anti-Hillary attacks, as we all know.
The continued DISMISSAL (by both the Media & Obama) of Hillary's experience, skill and superior policy analysis is making me really angry...!! It's classic sexism. Apparently Obama doesn't need experience or skill, CONSTANT empty poetry seems to be enough for him to be respected and adored - and people want to say gender has nothing to do with this election - it has EVERYTHING to do with this election! An appalling indictment on the state of gender relations in contemporary society!

Hillary Clinton & Larry King Interview in 1993.
Great to see this footage of Hillary speaking with Larry King back in 1993. Why did she have to wait 15 years before she should go for presidency??!! Back in 1993 she is the same age that Obama is now. Oh the double standard!! Obama can front up at 46yo with limited experience. Clinton has to wait until she is 60 and then her experience is conviently dismissed as "irrelevant". Disgraceful!
Another article looking at the role of sexism in this election. The writer endorses Hillary Clinton:
