OBAMA'S RHETORIC GETTING SOME FRIENDLY HELP?
Is there an echo in here?
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) have not only endorsed each other’s campaigns, they also have provided verbatim inspiration for each other.
A rival campaign circulated a pair of YouTube links on Sunday that make the point vividly.
Here's Patrick at a rally for his gubernatorial campaign on Oct. 15, 2006, during the final stretch of his successful campaign against then-Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey (R): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvaOkxbM9dY
“But her dismissive point, and I hear it a lot from her staff, is that all I have to offer is words — just words. ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, [applause and cheers] that all men are created equal.’ [Sustained applause and cheers.] Just words – just words! ‘We have nothing to fear but fear itself.’ Just words! ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.’ Just words! ‘I have a dream.’ Just words!”
Here’s Obama on Saturday night at the Democratic Party of Wisconsin’s Founders Day Gala in Milwaukee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgMcht-EW6I
“Don’t tell me words don’t matter! ‘I have a dream.’ Just words. ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’ Just words! [Applause.] ‘We have nothing to fear but fear itself.’ Just words — just speeches!”
An Obama official said: “They're friends who share similar views and talk and trade good lines all the time.”
Obama apparently ad-libbed the remark, which was not in his text.
The Massachusetts governor said in a statement: “Sen. Obama and I are longtime friends and allies. We often share ideas about politics, policy and language. The argument in question, on the value of words in the public square, is one about which he and I have spoken frequently before. Given the recent attacks from Sen. Clinton, I applaud him responding in just the way he did.”
The Boston Globe reported last year that Obama had echoed the “just words” comments in a New Republic article, and noted “symbiotic friendship between Obama and Patrick.”
Obama made the comments in reference to Saul Alinsky, father of community organizing, while talking with Ryan Lizza for an article published last March.
The inspiration has run both ways between Obama and Patrick, both Harvard Law grads and longtime acquaintances.
Obama also used “Yes, we can!” — now a staple of his presidential campaign — as a rallying cry in his successful race for U.S. Senate in 2004.
The Globe reported: “After Patrick employed the same phrase at a state Democratic Convention in 2005, a reporter alerted the campaign that it was Obama’s signature line, and they went back to the drawing board," said Dan Payne, a Democratic strategist working for Patrick at the time. (Patrick would adopt “together we can” instead.)
In fact, posters visible in the YouTube video from 2006 say, “Deval Patrick” and “Together We Can.”

Obama Echoes Deval Patrick...Again
The charismatic, brilliant, inspiring black politician came to the stage to address the latest attack from his white female opponent.
"Her dismissive point, and I hear it a lot from her staff, is all I have to offer is words," he said. "Just words.
"'We holds these truths to be self-evident,'" he continued as the crowd began to cheer and applaud, "'that all men are created equal' -- just words. Just words."
The applause increased.
"'We have nothing to fear but fear itself,'" the pol said. "Just words. 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.' Just words,'" he said, switching effortlessly from our Founding Fathers to FDR to JFK.
And then, the piece de resistance: "'I have a dream' -- just words," he said.
Barack Obama rebutting Hillary Clinton circa 2008?
Nope. Deval Patrick, ultimately successful Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate, responding to then-Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey in October 2006.
Of course, if you mistook the speech for one from Obama, you can be forgiven -- just this weekend Obama said something quite similar.
"Don't tell me words don't matter," Obama said to Wisconsin Democrats. "'I have a dream' -- just words. 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal' -- just words. 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself' - just words. Just speeches."
Watch Patrick HERE (http://youtube.com/watch?v=xvaOkxbM9dY) and Obama HERE (http://youtube.com/watch?v=SgMcht-EW6I).
Since last year, observers have been noting that rhetorical similarities between the two candidates with vaguely similar biographies and campaign pitches -- who also share political guru David Axelrod.
"It's a handoff," Axelrod explains in an email. "They're friends and allies. They share a view of politics and often riff off of each other."
Some, including the New York Observer noted that Obama's recent adoption of the "Yes, we can," slogan echoed Patrick's use of it.
"Yes we can reuse slogans," quipped Ben Smith at Politico, noting that a Patrick TV ad from 2006 uses the slogan -- as does an Obama state senate ad from 2004.
And Axelrod says"Yes we can" was Obama's campaign slogan in 2004. (So Obama echoed Patrick who echoed Obama.)
Of course, all of it is an English pinch of the slogan Si Se Puede from the United Farm Workers from 1972!
Common language and themes are not unheard of in politics, though it can also be controversial. A Boston Globe story from almost a year ago looks at the sharing that has gone on between Obama and Patrick, who are friends. What do you think?

UPDATE: The Obama campaign has issued a statement from Gov. Patrick: “Sen. Obama and I are long-time friends and allies. We often share ideas about politics, policy and language. The argument in question, on the value of words in the public square, is one about which he and I have spoken frequently before. Given the recent attacks from Sen. Clinton, I applaud him responding in just the way he did.”
It does seem to me that this issue may also be one between Obama and his supporters, not just Obama and Patrick. Thousands, if not millions, of Americans are inspired by Obama's words. They do not think they are "just words." But many of them also likely think they are at least somewhat original.
See below for direct quote of a comment submitted to the ABC Blog. If anyone got it right about Obama, it has to be this person:
Joanna, 9.42pm, 17 Feb 2008 (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/02/obama-echoes-de.html?cid=102717134#comment-102717134):
I feel the truth is going to start rearing its ugly head about "the man, the movement, Barack Obama. I'm an African-American woman who is a college professor, and I have yet to be moved by all of the rhetoric coming out of his mouth. The plagiarism that appears here, is the mere fact that he gave the same identical speech, word for word, not straying from it or invoking his own ideas. I'm deeply bothered by this, because many people are falling for this "messiah" as the pundits are calling him, and are not at all concerned whether or not he is capable of running this great country. It's ok to invoke lines or quotes from great orators in our history, but to do a speech where your words, dynamics in tone, and candor are identical, to me is shameless. Many people are looking to this man for hope and inspiration. Ironically, the only thing he is capable of doing is giving great speeches and biting off the substantive issues from Hillary Clinton. I say, "Buyer Beware." I think the free pass that he has gotten from the media is over. I support Hillary Clinton, because she knows what she is doing and has the experience to fix the problems that America will face when she gets in office. She won't have to bite off of or plagiarize someone else's speeches or policies. One thing about it, she is smart enough to create her own ideas and policies. So much so, that you'll keep hearing BarackObama state in debates, "I agree with Hillary!!!!"

I see that CNN has conveniently overlookes this issues today! They are so competely biases and I have not watched the station for a week - other than what I overhead when my partner was flicking channels! Thankfully ABC News and Politico reported on this debacle.
Well, I found this on CNN: "Obama, Clinton camps point to 'borrowed' rhetoric" (http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/02/18/obama-clinton-camps-point-to-borrowed-rhetoric/)
Nice try Obama camp! I submitted a comment - I hope it's not removed - CNN has a habit of removing half the decent comments that are contributed! Ok, I got a bit angry but really, this rot has to stop!
My comment (1.09pm):
"Nice try Obama camp. The fact remains that Mr. Obama's hollow platform is now being exposed for what it is - a charade! How dare he peddle this message of hope and change but use the recycled words of another man's speech? I don't care if the 2 men are friends - does that make it ok to cheat? If I plagiarized at university in the way he did in that speech I would most likely be expelled! What kind of example is this man setting to the very young people his campaign is trying to seduce?! I am sick and tired of the mainstream media giving this man a FREE RIDE. WHY IS THIS? WHY? DON'T DECEIVE THE PUBLIC WITH MISREPRESENTATION & PROPAGANDA! Thankfully independent news outlets and jounalists are telling people the truth about Mr. Obama and highlighting the absurdity that is Obamamania. Hopefully reality will soon set in for those under the his spell and sense will return to this nomination process. And I urge CNN to be more balanced in its reporting and start subjecting Obama and Clinton to the same standards and levels of scrutiny. NO MORE FREE RIDES FOR MR. OBAMA!"

Some of the comments I submitted to Jack Tapper's ABC News article (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/02/obama-echoes-de.html?cid=102827174#comment-102827174):

It is shameful the way in which Obama has decieved the voting public. I liked him at first. But as time has gone by I have realized that he is NIL capacity to follow through on his lofty, vague promises. And then to learn that his speeches are recycled...well, what can I say...This man is not a presidential candidate. He is a phony salesman conning people with plagiarized speeches and policies. Case closed. WAKE UP AMERICA!
2/18/08 (12.47am)
I sure hope voters in upcoming primaries take not of these very disturbing developments. Mr Obama's words are meaningless - and now we see they are not even his!!! I am sick and tired of mainstream media (jack tapper being the exception) giving Obama a FREE RIDE. It's so blatantly obvious that he does not have the experience, courage or skill to take on the presidential role. Copied policies, copied speeches, false promises, refusals to debate with his opponent, long associations with special interests, shady dealings with indicted real estate developer...what more do we need? WAKE UP AMERICA!
2/18/08 (12.53am)
The update and explanation provided from the Obama campaign is as embaressing as the original incident. I think part of the problem with Obama's campaign is that he has obviously signed up some incredibly devious and deceptive individuals and now the wheels are falling off! THERE IS NO ESCAPING THIS FACT - THE 2 SPEECHES ARE IDENTICAL. THERE IS NO DEFENSE. DO NO TRY TO DECEIVE PEOPLE WITH PROPAGANDA AND LIES.
2/18/08 (12.54am)
This idea that only the uneducated are following Clinton is complete nonsense and more propaganda peddled by the Obama campaign. Anyone with any intelligence and any capacity to think critically would know the Obama campaign is founded on an premise to deceive and fool people through charisma and WORDS! Well you didn't fool me and I am so angry that the Obama campaign continues to try and deceive innocent members of the public. Especially disturbing is the irresponsibility the Obama campaign has shown in seducing young people into the voting process knowing full well that the promises being peddled were completely ridicilous. WAKE UP AMERICA! I feel sorry for people who have fallen for this man. WAKE UP.

(Response to another contributor): Obama is about as electable as my local butcher! FACE FACTS - the GOP would obliterate Obama if he was the nominee. The anti-islamic smear would be horrendous and terrorize people into voting for GOP. Already the videos are circulating drumming up fear about Obama's ties to Islam. WAKE UP. Those polls you refer to are completely MEANINGLESS. Polls change like the wind and what a poll says now has NIL bearing on what will happen in November. And also, those useless polls are national votes, they do not take into consideration that elections are one by swing states, not by the largest number of votes a candidate secures. 2000 - Gore won the primary vote and lost the election. WAKE UP PEOPLE! A VOTE FOR OBAMA = A VOTE FOR REPUBLICAN RULE FOR ANOTHER 8 YEARS!!
2/18/08 (1.56am)
(Reponse to another contributor): There is one big difference between Hillary Clinton and Obama that you fail to recognize. Clinton does not present herself as a holier-than-thou preacher. She can acknowledge her faults and can admit error. We all know her history. There are no secrets. In contrast, Mr Obama presents himself as the cleanest and most pure of all politicians when the truth is anything but that. He tries to decieve unthinking peole into believing he is "different". What trite. If he just admitted he was a politican and all that goes with that, maybe he wouldn't be so unbearable. But his constant protestations that he is "different" are just ridiculous. At least Hillary Clinton knows how this game works and knows how to wade through a complex political system. This is not play group, it's American politics. I would rather have someone like Hillary Clinton who can play ball the hard way than a charlatan preacher who has nil capacity to be honest, upfront and REAL!!!! Thank you!
2/18/08 (1.51pm)
WAKE UP AMERICA! BO is a commodity, a product which has been marketed and sold to people in a way which I believe is irresponsible and highly deceptive. This man is not fit for the job. Copied policies, copied speeches, refusals to debate his opponent, empty promises, inciting cult-like behavior from followers...It's all looking very bad. It's so obvious that Clinton is the more experienced, more qualified, more suitable candidate for this role and it's exceptionally frustrating that the mainstream media consists in giving Mr. Obama a massively free ride. Thankfully Jack Tapper has been one of the few journalists willing to confront the entire fiascio of Obamamania head-on! People are free to have their fantasies and dreams, but please, discuss them at your cult meetings!
2/18/08 (2.31pm)
It really is amazing to watch human beings trying to defend the indefensible! Under no circumstances is it possible to adequately defend blatant plagiarism. If Obama was as authentic as he would like the public to believe, he would have acknowledged the original source of his words in this speech. The fact that he did not is simply more evidence that this man is willing to go to ANY lengths to seduce people into voting for him. In a very short period of time I have been able to collect more than 30 articles across a range of more independent and critically minded media outlets which have brought attention to the insanity of what is taking place here. A woman with 35 years of public service experience (in various contexts) is being sidelined by an attractive, smooth-talking salesman who is willing to go to any lengths to win over his target groups: young people, first-time voters, African-American people, guilty educated "no war" White liberals, and Oprah supporters! WORDS WORDS WORDS INDEED! As many or as few to convince people in these target groups to vote for him. Would you select a CEO of a private company who had nothing more to say to you than "yes we can, yes we can"?? No. So why then are people so willing to throw out all reason, logic and rationality and vote for a PRESIDENTIAL candidate whose political record and public life expeirence is significant less than his opponent's? When the love affair with Obama ends, which it surely will in the same way that all affairs eventually do, I sure hope that not too much damage has been caused to those people targeted by Obama's fanciful messages and false promises. I also hope that a disastrious decision is not made by selecting Obama as the Democratic nominee as that will, most certainly, be a ticket for GOP rule for another 8 years! I encourage all to look at this list of 30+ articles at the link below and ask yourself - could all of these articles about Obama be wrong? No. WAKE UP AMERIA. ASK QUESTIONS.
2/18/08 (2.47pm)
Finally, the wheels of the Obama campaign are starting to fall off! But not before plenty of us already knew what was going on here. It's called FANTASY, IDEALISM, OBAMAISM - fueled by the candidate, his campaign team and the media itself. And it's very damaging. Read these 30+articles critiquing Obama fanatacism and aks yourself - "what is really going on here?" Don't be a victim.
2/18/08 (2.58pm)
(Response to another contributor): This is not a smear machine. I am an individual with my own free mind and will. I will say whatever I wish to say and I operate under no influence of Hillary Clinton. Your dismissive remark - "the clinton smear machine is on the loose" - is a pathetically weak attempt to deflect attention away from the real issue here - the inadequacies of your candidate, Mr. Obama. It is perfectly reasonable to draw attention to the pros and cons of a person applying for a job, in this case the presidency of the USA! We have heard much about Mr. Obama's apparent assets, now it's time for the public to hear about some of Mr. Obama's liabilities. No more free rides. It's amazing how defensive and unreasonable Obama fanatics are in response to simple questioning and criticism. I have no allegiance to Hillary Clinton. My allegiance is to truth, justice and fairness. And in this instance I see large numbers of people in society being decieved into believing one man can change the world. It's complete and utter propaganda and political deviance. That kind of deception makes me very angry. It is from this position that my comments originate!
Encouraging (not) to see that CNN deleted the comment I submitted. I guess they didn't like that I accused them of being biased and misleading and giving Mr. Obama a "free ride".

Plagiarism happens when someone uses as their own WRITTEN material, WITHOUT ATTRIBUTION.
By the way, Canada leads global movement AGAINST plagiarism and PROTECTING copyright. Apparently, they have been quite concerned about Barack's blatant plagiarism, and begun a dialog with Hillary's side. This is what the newspaper quoted (and not that Canada started conversation on NAFTA with Hillary.. it was a convenient modification/mixup). [Disclaimer: This is what I have gathered by reading many news items, and this is NOT any official statement from Hillary's campaign]
