Following up on comments in the "RASMUSSEN: National Daily Tracking Poll - McCain v Obama" thread (http://www.hillaryclintonforum.net/discussion/showthread.php?t=18489&page=5):

be forwarned, the economic stats released yesterday have many undecideds in my area going Obama. Bill Clinton's speech last week reminding America the Repubs said he was also too young and inexperienced and that Obama is ready to lead now. Pockebooks plus Bill Clinton (they LOVE Bill and like Hillary here, voted Reagan and Bill and W here) are on the verge of making ohio get more blue. IF the Ayers ad reruns and McCain tells us how he will pay for our lost homes and high healthcare he will win OH because we want corruption cleaned but we want medicine and shelter more.

Since the general election doesn't have caucuses (thank god) , it will be more clear who should have been nominated for Democrat nominee. Let it roll....

According to the Battleground Poll:
http://www.tarrance.com/082008/Battleground-35-charts.pdf

52% believe that McCain is a "Strong Leader" (up from 48% in May)
37% believe that Obama is a "Strong Leader" (down from 43%)
This is a gap of 15%, yet 51% THINK that Obama will win.

Strong leadership does not help win an election when people are suffering and believe that:
Obama "represents the middle class" 52% (McCain 37%)
Obama "fights for people like me" 48% (McCain 39%)
Obama "will create jobs and improve the economy" 48% (McCain 39%)
Obama "will handle health care issues" 54% (McCain 35%)

Even though more people believe that Obama will win 51% vs. McCain's 34% (the economic conditions favor it) there is some positive news for McCain and reasons for Obama to worry:

If the election for President were held today, and you had to make a choice, for which candidate would you probably vote:
McCain 40%
Obama 39%
Unsure/Refused 19%
Other 2%

Will get things done:
McCain 42% (up from 40% in May)
Obama 44% (down from 48% in May)

Can Reduce gas and energy prices:
McCain 40% (up from 31% in May)
Obama 37% (down from 50% in May)

Will Keep America Prosperous: (tie)
McCain 43% (up from 41%)
Obama 43% (down from 47%)

In addition, compared to May 08, Obama's been on a downward trend in all areas, while McCain has been on an upward trend.

Trend may not be good, But the news didn't sound all that good for McCain.

I Think McCain needs to run an add over there showing how Michele Obama's ridiculous 200K raise happened just before Obama got a huge earmark for the hospital.

Basically Obama ran a well directed psychological operation.

So well directed, a plurality of the voters think he is a shoe in, making them less inclined to vote (in theory). Even though they think McCain has the personality to make it work.

The brilliance is incredible. The criminality of it is shocking.

Yes that - but I really think McCain needs to come out with a proposal to help Americans with the economy, health care, jobs going overseas. Those issues are important as well as security which is the issue he is running on - important but economy is as well.

Now that kind of tv ad - a positive for Americans - not just the surge is working or has worked - THE ECONOMY STUPID was a great slogan and it is needed now again.

Your right.

For the Economy I think he could do the following

I think he would do well to point to the latest job loss number as a result of the price of gas and point to how his energy plan which includes everything and excludes nothing like obama's does would work well.

He could also point to how keeping taxes low will help businesses recover while increasing them will not.

On the health care front, he should run adds that explain in the simplest terms what his healthcare plan is. I heard him talk about refundable tax credits but it was not until I went to his website that I realized you would actually get cash to pay for the health care.

He needs to spell out in the add exactly how that works. You don't want people thinking they have to come up with the 5000 dollars first, then the governmnet refunds them at the end of the year. In his plan the money would go directly to the insurance company.

Unless McCain/Palin addresses these concerns with concrete solutions, it will remain a tight race.
