ABOARD THE PALIN PLANE — Senator John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin went their separate ways on Wednesday, but they may not be apart for long.
A senior McCain aide said the campaign is considering keeping Governor Palin and Senator McCain together for appearances around the country more often than is usual for a ticket - perhaps more so, in fact, than any campaign in recent times.
“It is under serious consideration that they will spend more time together than not, and more time together than is traditional,” the aide said. Most years, candidates campaign almost entirely separately to cover as much ground and meet as many voters as possible. Given the compressed timetable for this season, the calculation is extremely unusual.
Officials are weighing the possibility, the aide said, mainly because they have watched in the past week the reactions to the two in the crowds, which have seemed larger and more enthusiastic than just a week earlier when Senator McCain was wandering alone.
“There’s just a huge amount of enthusiasm,” the aide said. “It clicks,” he said, adding later, “Sometimes these vice presidential selections - the pairings - work in a magical way.”
He compared this coupling to 1992 when Bill Clinton selected Al Gore, a choice, he said, that revealed some brand of magic.
“The idea of keeping them together is they are a great duo together from the perspective of delivering a message,” on matters of energy, the economy and more, he said of Ms. Palin and Senator McCain. “And,” he said, “we like the images.”
