NEW YORK (CBS) ― Already under fire for his tax troubles, Manhattan Congressman Charles Rangel really put his foot in his mouth on Friday.

In a CBS 2 HD exclusive interview Rep. Rangel called Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin "disabled."

The question was simple. Why are the Democrats so afraid of Palin and her popularity.

The answer was astonishing.

"You got to be kind to the disabled," Rangel said.

That's right. The charman of the powerful House Ways & Means Committee called Palin disabled -- even when CBS 2 HD called him on it.

CBS 2 HD: "You got to be kind to the disabled???"

Rangel: "She's disabled."

"There is no question about politically it's a nightmare to think that a person's foreign policy is based on their ability to look at Russia from where they live."

Republicans think Rangel's comments are insulting as well as shocking.

"Charlie Rangel's comments are clearly disgraceful," Rep. Peter King, R-Long Island, said. "This is just another liberal Democrat who can't accept an independent woman running for president."

King, who is co-chair of the McCain-Palin campaign in New York, watched Rangel's comments with CBS 2 HD. He was particularly upset because Palin's 4-month-old son, Trig, is disabled. He has Down's syndrome.

"We should be sensitive to her or any woman who has a child or family member who has any afflciiton at all," King said. "And so to use the word disabled in the conetxt of a female candidate for vice president who has a child who is disabled really is wrong. Charlie owes her and the entire disabled community and appology."

I'm not all that surprised Rangel could say this, because I've heard him say some disturbing stuff in the past. Then he goes for months on his best behavior, the media doesn't report it, and people forget. It's like he never said anything... an elder statesman, never to be doubted.

A House ethics committee plans to investigate, and Republicans have called for the 19-term congressman to be removed from his powerful position as chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee. Oh I saw this - and some representative for the disabled said it was insulting, and mentioned that Roosevelt was disabled... so I think Rangel was actually trying to say that Palin is "retarded". Which is so nasty I feel like crying.

I don't care one bit about Charlie Rangel. He was the leader of the NY delegation and was extremely upset when Hillary did not suspend her campaign the night of the last primary. He and the NY delegation could not wait until she formally did suspend, they came out the day before in support of Obama.

He like all the rest of them need to go. I wrote to him twice and put him on notice that even though I cannot vote for/or against him because I don't live in his district. I would be happy to support anyone who runs against him with donations.

The democrats are really the worst kind of politicians. I can't believe that I belong to this party. I'm happy that I got to see what they are really like and I don't think I will ever belong to the Democratic Party again.

Rangel has done much worse than this latest atrocity. The housing mess is CAUSED by government interference in the private marketplace and we have Charles Rangell to thank for that. He pushed through legislation that enabled unqualified individuals to take out mortgages they couldn't afford. That is heart and soul of the "sub-prime" meltdown. It was caused by government meddling. No Rangel, no meltdown.

Its called term limits.. The president is limited to 2 terms and rightfully so!
Now apply term limits to the royal tasbards of the congress and senate.
Throw in the Supreme Court while we're at it as well for reform!.
