Looks like you all had a busy night here!!

Upon my arrival I was greeted VERY warmly.I was,of course,in all my Hillary refinement.Hat,Shirt,button.They swarmed me.I mean literally crawled all over me.At one point they were 2 deep to speak with me.They all want to know the same questions...

Are you a Puma?

Will you leave us if they drop kick Biden and call in Hillary?

Why did you decide to support McCain?

Are you supporting McCain because you like him or only in protest?

What do you Hillary people REALLY think of Palin?

And my personal favorite......Are you a Republican now??

They were seriously nice to me.I had several offers of food and drink and they all seem thrilled we are doing this. They are very curious to know EXACTLY how many of us there are.Close estimates aren't good enough for these people. They want an exact head count...yesterday.

HillBuzzBlogSpot is right. They dress better. And drive better cars, and serve better food.I saw not one ounce of Hummus anywhere. They had real soda, real coffee and great snacks. And they are good about sharing.Food and ideas.

We watched the debate on a really big flat screen t.v. At least I tried to watch the debate. There were several pesky news people there, who made a beeline for me as soon as they spotted my Hill gear.

I let them know that if they were going to speak to me,they were going to print EXACTLy what I said or risk the wrath of an angry PUMA.They seemed amused by this and said they would add nothing to my comments.I assured them that would not be happening,or they will be contacted by a group of angry, bitter, women who cling to their guns. That got a big laugh.

When they left me alone, here come the camera dummies with them aimed right at my girls. And I mean right at the twins. My Hill shirt fits in a manner that makes her name sit right across these babies making them look larger than life.I can hardly wait to see them on 42 inches of widescreen!!

So after all that I finally got to settle in and watch a debate.Wow.Obama had his ass handed to him, just like I knew he would.
Mccain was shaky at first, but never let O in for a kill. And what was up with the "I got one too" bit??? Did he realize how small that made him look?? What a joke.
And boy do these republicans know how to give Barack a bad time.I almost had a hard time hearing for all the heckling going on.And some of these people were quite elderly. But full of spirit for McCain.

It was,all in all, a good debate.I think Obama got the big smackdown he deserved.
The GOP chairman is setting up a FEW things he would like for me to attend and speak at.Not one,he said a FEW.We'll see how I do and I will keep you posted.

WOW Mary what on earth did you tell them when they asked all the questions???? Did you get a feel that Mccain would win from them???? My husband and I thought Mccain looked the best as well but its always good to get another point of view because i think we all just want bambi out and I tend to not even hear what the man says...I never understood the attaction to him..He bores me to tears...Can you imagine if Hillary was a Republican what she would do to the man. haha...It would kinda be nice to see...anyway thanks for the update..

I answered their questions as honestly as I could.
Yes,I am a PUMA.NOT a Cougar,a PUMA.There is a BIG difference.

No,we will not leave you holding the bag.Besides,How dumb do you think Hillary is??

I am supporting McCain because I believe he best suits my needs and I suspect Obama is the anti Christ!

We are voting for McCain because we really like him!! And Donna Brazile told us to!

Yes, we really like Sarah Palin. Her husband is hot and she can shoot a moose.

No,I am not a Republican now and have no plans to be one.I do not feel the need to hijack your party.I know how that feels.I am an Independant.

I really believed that they believe,McCain will win.It was nice to see others dislike of Obama.Remember ,I have that Obama voting b.f. He has no clue where I was tonight, but as soon as he sees our local paper in the morning, the poop will be flying.

So yes, they are as behind him as we are and very positive he will win.I felt comfortable with them and they could not have been more welcoming.

Sounds like it was great fun. Glad you were treated well - maybe your Obama-loving bf will see the light before November! We can only hope and pray!

I saw not one ounce of Hummus anywhere.

Now don't go ragging on Hummus - I LOVE it! In fact it's one of my favorite lunches at work - roasted garlic hummus and french bread! Yum!

OK, but let's not forget that, if Hillary were our nominee, these nice Republicans would be busily smearing her, her husband, her daughter, and her cat and calling us all socialists and communists for voting for her.

Please remember that--long before the Democrats went bad with Obama--Republicans invented the art of smearing Democratic women.

Also, be careful what you tell your Republican friends. Don't give away too much personal information. They're sure to use it against you at some future time.

Good points Perry! This is not the end of the war with the repubs, it's just a time-out or a cease-fire until after November 4!

when the article comes out.. if you can post it, that would be great!

BTW.. the repubs, I had a very similar experience with them. I am convinced its only the extremes of both parties that are scary... the radical left, like BO, have taken over the undemocratic party

I have no problems working with the repubs.

I hate to say this but Perry get off the soap box. Enough with the tin hat republicans can't be trusted as if they're the evil empire lines. Mods, feel free to smack me down on this, but one can only bite his tongue for so long.

I'll have to back HumbleDave up on that. I'm a Republican and my opinion of Hillary and her supporters have been changed for the good. In fact, I stated as much in my first post here. Prior to that, I was not kind to Hillary, but when I saw how she was railroaded in the primary's, yet still conducted herself with such grace, I became a reluctant fan (it's always hard to admit your wrong :-))

I'm sure there will be some Repub's who will forget how much they owe Hillary if they will this election, but some of us won't.

Not all of us are the devil and both sides are guilty of not behaving with basic human decency. I honestly feel like we are witnessing the birth of the new Republican party who will not forget what Hillary's supporters have done for this country.

"Please remember that--long before the Democrats went bad with Obama--Republicans invented the art of smearing Democratic women. "

Sorry, Perry, I have to stick up for my party for a minute.

1) If you look real close, the party that NEVER, NEVER, NEVER discriminates is the Republican Party. If they attack a candidate it is based on their politics - not their gender, race, religion or what they ate for dinner last night.

2) Negative campaigning is an unfortunate fact of life, and it is practiced by everybody. Republicans are no better or worse than Democrats when it comes to this - you can plainly see for yourself what Democrats are doing to McCain - and especially Palin. "Smearing" goes all the way back to the earliest elections in this country (did you know that Alexander Hamilton was a bastard?) - well before the modern parties even existed.

(As an aside, I used to paint ALL Democrats with the same brush, till I came to this site. It's been a revelation, I can tell ya.)

But honestly, I think the love affair is only temporary. I will never ever be a Republican, but I don't think I'll ever be a Democrat again either. I'm not happy with either party. The Dem party is corrupt, and the Reps are just too socially conservative for my taste.

I'm pretty much where you are. I'm presently enjoying the relationship with moderates of all parties, but I think that will end after the election. I, too, cannot go back to the Dem party. That bridge has been burned. But I can't see myself as a Repub due to certain polarizing social issues. Yet the Indy party can get too radical as well. So I guess I'm roaming around in political no mans land.

I'm not Mary but...

Not even once.

However, the phrase "----ing liar!" was heard many times.

And "Answer the question you ----ing moron" shattered the air quite often.

And of course "If you raise your ----ing hand one more time, I will break your arm" and "Smirk again, you arrogant jerk and I will smack you silly" did escape my mouth a number of times.

I understand where Perry is coming from. Had Hillary been the nominee (as she rightfully should have been) then we would not be so nice to each other. If the HCF had gone behind Nader or Barr the same thing. In 2012 when Hillary is running against say, Palin, then it will be all on again. However, I for one, really appreciate that we have all had a chance to get to know each other and thank you all for your willingness to see Hillary for what she is - a brilliant politician who was stabbed in the back several times by her own party, but had the courage, tenacity, resillience and fortitude to keep on fighting for what is right, no matter the odds! It is great to know that not all republicans are right-wing meanies, and I hope you all realize now that not all democrats are left-wing loonies! It would be great to think that a number of you would fight for Hillary in 2012, but I have a feeling that won't happen. And that's OK - I think we are all fortunate to have had a chance to see each other for what we are - not for what others tell you we are!

Not all of us are the devil and both sides are guilty of not behaving with basic human decency. I honestly feel like we are witnessing the birth of the new Republican party who will not forget what Hillary's supporters have done for this country.

I like this sentiment Maddie and I hope you are right! It would be really great if we have won some of you guys over to vote for Hillary in 2012!

I'm afraid I have to disagree here - the Lewinsky affair had NOTHING to do with Bill's politics - it was a battle purely to destroy him. A successful two-term Democratic President! To smear him and his family all over the world was nothing short of sinful. Politicians themselves and their records (or lack thereof in the case of BHO) are fair game, but when it comes to their famiies and personal business that should be totally off limits! I can't imagine how Chelsea was feeling while all that was going on! In fact, that whole debacle was what turned me on to the dems .... until then I really didn't care a whole lot whether repubs or dems were in power, I figured they were all dirty politicians!

It doesn't necessarily need to be a third party as such. With how close elections have been in the last few cycles, a moderate independent swing voter bloc would wield a lot of power.

Mary, I am glad to hear that you had a good experience. I think others are right that everyone is in it to win it, and had Hillary been the nominee it would have been a tough fought political battle. However I think that McCain holds Senator Clinton in pretty high regard, and we might have seen a drastic decline of the sort of nastiness we've seen for the past few elections and had something a bit more special and issues focused. Of course, there would have been some personal shots from the extremes on both sides, but I think it would have been a nice race, all things considered.

Regardless of how things play out in future elections, it is nice to know (at least for now) that this race has brought together some people who will be on different sides of the fence in those future contests. I hope that it will help us to remember that we can believe different things and be friends, we can respect each other and talk about things, that in the end we're all Americans.

3. And the lady sitting next to cracked up.She said she'll be calling O that from now on.

She was older and dressed really well,so I chose not to share some of the other colorful things I call him!!

The one thing most of these people told me,is that they have not been happy with their own party the last few years. They feel it is being taken over by the Far Right and are discouraged. One gentleman asked me if I would be willing to help him stage a takeover of the local GOP!! He said that a lot of long time members here are no longer active, because the new members are only focused on two issues ,Abortion and gay rights. He told me he personally doesn't care what other people do with their genitalia, and there are far more important issues to be dealt with.Unfortunately, the members that have been lost, also have $$$.

I think there is general discontent in both parties, many of these people had voted for Hillary, and would have voted for her in Nov.They were not ashamed to say so and really liked her ideas.I think they are the more moderate Republicans.

You can register as an Independent but not be a member of the party. That way you get counted in the polls, which I think is important. Independent voters are a growing constituency and carry more weight in every election as the swing vote.

I'm not in any way familiar with the Independent party, actually.

Down at our McCain HQ,which is also the GOP office. They are running ALL Republican campaigns out of one huge office, with McCain taking up most of the space. Here's the weird thing...They have nobody here from the McCain campaign.NO ONE!! It is all being run locally.I thought this was odd.Hillary had about 6 paid staff members to coordinate everything.
They seem to be VERY organized though, mostly folks my age and older, who seem to know what they're doing.

It is important in order to save money to have local volunteers working the office. I would want to have more of the public funding to go towards McCain and Palin's travel and TV ads if we could. Being smart with the money is best, and if local volunteers can energize their districts, that is a great way to make a buck go farther.

I was just thinking this morning what a parallel universe we are in right now. If Hillary had been the nominee most of you would be saying that McCain = Bush. I think part of the fun of this is seeing how we all have knee-jerk reactions to the other side, no matter who is the nominee. Well, at least it seemed that way...until Obama...

I don't even like McCain that much. I'm voting for Palin, straight up. :)

Perry, I'm an R and I can tell you that this forum has opened my eyes to a lot of things. I have a new appreciation for Hillary (not that I ever slammed her before). This forum has been great I think for bringing the 2 groups together and coming to an understanding that we all want what's best for the country, yet we may have different ways of getting there.

There will always be groups on both sides that hate each other and think the other is "evil." When that happens the next time Hillary runs, please realize that those voices are the minority and that most Rs are not that way. The media just likes to quote the bad ones.

Mary, Didn't I see you on a balcony in New Orlean's???

Mu hubby never watches the debates so I was in my office watching online and he managed to hear the part where McCain said "I don't have a seal" and he came running into my office and said "GREAT...showed that SOB that he's not the only one who can be "snarky" (said something else but X rated!)

It sounds like you and your "dynamic duo" had a great time!

I'm sure there will be some Repub's who will forget how much they owe Hillary if they will this election, but some of us won't.

Another Pubbie here. I agree with you completely, though I hadn't thought much about it before. We (as a party) would be foolish to discount the PUMAs after the election. Obviously there is much common ground here and we should focus on that.

Not all of us are the devil
And some of us even like hummus!

thanks for the report!!

when the article comes out.. if you can post it, that would be great!

BTW.. the repubs, I had a very similar experience with them. I am convinced its only the extremes of both parties that are scary... the radical left, like BO, have taken over the undemocratic party

I have no problems working with the repubs.

I think that most of us feel that way.....not extreme either way...which is what draws us to Hillary and McCain

Mail Tribune

Though it lacked the bloody intensity of Ali vs. Frazier or the ancient hatred of Yankees vs. Red Sox, the first presidential debate of this election season had local Democrats and Republicans fired up and ready for the next round.

Around 50 supporters of Arizona Sen. John McCain gathered at the Jackson County Republican headquarters on West Main Street in Medford to cheer on their candidate.

The crowd remained vocal throughout the first half of the debate, which dealt primarily with the current economic crisis and the controversial $700 billion government bailout plan.

Mary ****** stood out from the pack by wearing a Hillary Clinton for President T-shirt. *****, a long-time Democratic, will be casting a vote for McCain this year after Clinton was, in her view, unfairly treated by her own party, and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, during the primary.

"It has also occurred to me that experience means a lot," *****, said. "It's not that McCain is the oldest candidate or that he has had cancer that concerns me. This year I am putting country before party."

Sandy Ambercrombie, of Medford, found a more humorous slant on the debate when pointing out the candidate's fashion choices.

"Look at McCain with his nice blue shirt, he looks more dressed for television," Ambercrombie said, chuckling. "Obama has that bright white shirt. For him, it all went down from there."

McCain's humor scored early with the local Republicans. McCain's crack about Obama's inability to work with Republicans in the U.S. Senate by saying it would be hard for the Illinois senator to "reach across the isle from that far to the left" brought the loudest laughs.

Valerie Smullen, a registered Republican since she moved to America from England in 1958, praised McCain's long record in government and his level-headed approach to the questions posed to him during the debate.

"He has been around the track several times," Smullen said. "He seems able to keep his thoughts in order and his thoughts are very clear."

Meanwhile, local Democrats enjoyed microbrews and pizza with the debate at the Redrock Pizza on West Jackson Street. A life-size cutout of Obama greeted those who filed into the bar. The crowd was mostly subdued for the first half of the war of words, though Obama's strong statements on America's need to improve it's standing in the world brought cheers and clapping.

McCain's decision earlier this week to suspend campaign activities to work on the economic bailout kept the debate up in the air, and potential viewers unsure of what to expect Friday night.

"I respect the fact that McCain was willing to address the mortgage crisis this week," said Brian Reed. "Fortunately, he was able to go through with the debate."

Ashland resident and Obama supporter Ann Cramer said she would have liked to hear more about the economic bailout before the debate moved onto to foreign policy issues.

"Neither candidate addressed the $700 billion, which is what I think is the most important topic right now," Cramer said.

Bob Scheelen, of Medford, called the debate a draw, which he said was a win for Obama.

"McCain was supposed to win the foreign policy debate out right, and I think Obama did very well there," Scheelen said. "That is in Obama's favor."

The debate did not seem to change anyone's mind on who they planned to vote for on Nov. 4.

"My vote was already cast before the debate, but this has once again confirmed Obama is the candidate we need right now," said Dorcas Herr. "This was a good opportunity to see the candidates stand side by side for the first time."

Well, I cannot predict that we'll all be on opposite sides in the future.

Thinking this will all return to politics as usual after this election discounts one important fact: neither party is what it once was. Both parties have had a shift to the left, so the Republicans are in the center (leaving the far right behind) and the Democrats are on the far left (leaving the moderates behind.) This puts most of us more or less squarely in the middle.

Mary, I'm so glad you had a good time. Nice article. :)

Mary, thanks for doing this. I enjoyed reading it and it made me laugh. I have been volunteering at the GOP office here, too, and several people have told me they liked Hillary and one man had changed his registration from Republican to Independent so he could vote for her in the primary. No one likes Obama but not a single person has said anything negative about Hillary. The campaign coordinator is a young woman and she and the other regular helpers (also women) are very much into women's suffrage and women's right. Actually, I think the Republican and Democratic parties are doing a big switch aroo...remember, Lincoln was a Republican. If enough of us have an impact on this election, I feel we can effect the Republican party...it will become more moderate. Remember, it wasn't always right wing like it is now; that started happening with Ronald Reagan. I'm not going to become a Republican, I am an Independent who has always voted Democratic, but I also am not going to become a member of the Democratic Sexist Party of America.

They're sure to use it against you at some future time.

i for one am tired of all the hate and animosity between the parties, it has gone on to long, to the point that people want blood.thats part of the reason why the country is where it is now.

Naughty chair for Mary!!!:D

Seriously, I'm glad you were well received. I'll have to read your post to Charlie Brown to get your answers. I do understand why Perry chimes in to remind us of how SOME Repubs treated the Clintons, but the benefit of the doubt is in order. Always. Otherwise, what's the point of anything.

Are we looking to stay firmly entrenched in one spot on the other side of the fence, or are we meeting in the middle to compromise and end gridlock in Congress? I personally forgive everyone who might've ripped on the Clintons or on Hillary but now sees things more clearly.

Anyhow, enough soapboxing. You are a lively, passionate, likable, and astute representative for the cause of democracy. You go, sister Revolutionary!

Can't wait for your next report. You're a freakin' hoot!! Big, big hug from Vegas. xox, juli

I couldn't agree more! IMO, it's time for a Middle American Party! We can learn from each other and come to some truly acceptable, workable compromises. Together, we can advance this country more than any Congress ever has.

Whoever I genuinely come to know, respect, and trust during this election cycle, I'm sure I will continue to know, respect, and trust them thereafter. I'm not a fair-weather friend, and I really do want unity among and between all clear-thinking, decent, rational people.

As for the exremists on both sides, they can demolish each other for all I care.

That's true, Perry. I'm sure many of them would have been, but the events that transpired during the Dem primary, to my way of thinking, have changed that overall dynamic once and for all.

There are still jagoffs on the far Right who look for any chance to besmirch the Clintons, but they are not representative of the whole.

Still, I am glad that you pop up now and again as our Greek chorus. It behooves everyone to employ their instincts and good judgment.

I never want to become as cynical or evil as the extremists at either end.

Anyhoo, can't wait to see what new goodies you have up on your site. You're a freakin' creative genius!

Speaking for myself, no, I would not have compared McCain to Bush. What an insult to McCain. I've always liked him, and I have never been a divisive, name-calling campaigner. I think a contest between McCain and Hillary would've been one we could all have been proud of.

Julianne, you summed up my feelings about this so well. There is no real representation of middle Americans with regards to the current parties. I think McCain offers us the closest we will get to it since Hillary is not the Dem candidate. I do believe middle American Dems and middle American Reps have found the common ground and it is one I don't think the media is going to be able to destroy. They can't spin what we all have experienced on this board of civil conversations and respect for each other.

Muzza, congrats...you may well have started a new era of "cut the crap" for both party's middle American voters.
