The State of the Democratic Party? [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

As Jim Geraghty points out, two thirds of Republicans voted against the bill. (Here's the roll.) But Dems are in control of Congress. The power of Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama couldn't convince loyal Democrats to vote for this bill? 95 Democrats voted against it. Seems shocking.

I'm telling you, it is the American people that are putting a wrench in this. They're saying "no deal." Frank is on and stumbling over his BS. He is wanting to releave the credit crisis.

No he's saying, that maybe it may or may not have an impact on the economy. Well, what the hell is it? Isn't anyone looking towards either outcome? Are they not smart enough to evaluate either senarios?

My co-workers are railing against McCain for his "failure" in rallying republicans - and they (like many other liberals) just pass over the fact that Sen. Obama, and like many posters earlier said Speaker Pelosi, failed to whip up enough Democrat votes.

How can anyone in their right mind place the overall burden on McCain?
I'm no McCain lover - and will not vote for either McCain or Obama (as of right now) - but I'm so sick of the hypocrisy Obama supporters in regards to the "moral high ground".

The Dems are in charge- it's the Dems fault

there is a great video in this forum that tracks the whole housing debacle.
it clearly shows it was a democratic invention -

thrusting their policy into the market,
pumping up artificial demand by letting unqualified buyers buy houses,
this in turn raised housing prices due to the "artificial demand" that interfered with normal market dynamics
that in turn created a housing bubble that burst when these same people couldn't pay for the houses they bought.

and BO & Dodd took the most money from the lobbyists connected with this.

this is democratic failed social policy in action and they have the gaul to blame the republicans. both bush and mccain pushed for regulation but the dems would have none of it.

no wonder the repubs (and dems) pushed back on pelosi for her lies tagging it to the repubs.

she needs to go NOW!

I'm sick of Barney Frank getting his face on tv and blathering on and on, and even making jokes. I don't think there is anything funny about this.

He wanted the names of the 12 Republicans reported to have switched their planned votes after Nancy Pelosi's big speech before the vote. Frank said it's ridiculous that they got their feelings hurt and he will go to them and talk nice to them so maybe they'll vote yes. And, all the reporters laughed at his joking around.

Maybe he better spend his time talking nice to the 95 Dems that voted against the bill.

I agree with Lindsey Graham who got on FOX and said this is exactly why Congress's approval is at 12%.

McCain's campaign speaks up.

"John McCain's campaign claims the $700 billion bailout legislation failed in the House because Democrats, from Barack Obama to Nancy Pelosi, created a toxic, partisan environment.

McCain senior adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin said in a statement on Monday that while the Republican presidential candidate had tried to lead on the issue by suspending his campaign and returning to Washington last week, Obama had not been involved with the negotiations and other Democrats had put partisanship ahead of finding a solution.

Holtz-Eakin pointed to Speaker Pelosi's (D-Calif.) "strongly worded partisan speech," delivered just before the vote and already serving as a lightning rod for the anger of many Republicans.

Holtz-Eakin said Pelosi's remarks "poisoned the outcome" of the vote.

“This bill failed because Barack Obama and the Democrats put politics ahead of country,” Holtz-Eakin said.

He added that McCain had been "attacked by the Democratic leadership: Sens. Obama [Ill.] and [Majority Leader Harry] Reid [D-Nev.], Speaker Pelosi and others" for returning to Washington last week.

"Their partisan attacks were an effort to gain political advantage during a national economic crisis," Holtz-Eakin said. "By doing so, they put at risk the homes, livelihoods and savings of millions of American families."

Obama did join McCain and congressional leaders at a meeting at the White House last Thursday afternoon in an effort to reach a bipartisan solution."

Fact is instead of bargaining and debating for the best deal for the American taxpayer, these fools in Washington were bargaining and debating for votes. It was supposed to go down a 50/50 vote. Their idea was to blast something through as quick as possible with no one party having to take the blame if it failed miserably. What gutless wonders! Pelosi is a proven non leader and her little speech right before the House vote showed true arrogance. Politics at usual. Instead of having us in mind they are all trying to position themselves (reps and dems alike) and their Pres. candidate to come out as the savior.

Polling over the last few days showed that the majority of American's were against this bill..what I see happening today is that for once, the congress listened to their voters...I believe that they have to come up with a plan that is fair to all...I for one have enough trouble bailing myself out of debt so I understand the feeling people have about not wanting to take on the burden of mistakes made by others.
