View Full Version : (10/2/08) "'Brilliant' Gwen Ifill Cousin Says Palin Is 'Offensive to Black Women'" (Newsbusters)

Here are more signs Sarah Palin could face an uphill battle with PBS host Gwen Ifill. Professor Sherrilyn Ifill of the University of Maryland Law School, who Gwen Ifill has lauded as "my brilliant baby cousin," has written that black women are not buying Sarah Palin’s "false claims to feminism" and is portrayed as too perfect: "when women who are privileged present as though they have it all together, it’s offensive to black women."
The Community Times, a suburban Maryland newspaper, found Professor Ifill was ardently opposed to the Alaska governor when they did an e-mail interview:
"From the first day, Palin presented herself as shooting a bear in the morning, field dressing it, cooking up the breakfast, diapering the babies, passing legislation in the afternoon, cleaning the house, satisfying her husband, etc., etc., etc. And it's just not true," she wrote in an e-mail interview. "It's hard to be an average working mom, really hard. And when women who are privileged present as though they have it all together, it's offensive to black women."
She said, "black women are not easily confused by false claims to feminism. When women like Palin lay claims to ‘representing' average women, I think that black women have a visceral reaction to it."
Ifill added that Palin "missed her opportunity when she announced Bristol's pregnancy to explicitly talk about how painful it was to her as a mother - instead of making it as though this too was also part of her perfect life.
"Hillary has the sympathy of women because of what she went through with Bill in front of the whole country. Michelle [Obama] takes pains to be self-deprecating and to talk about her concerns and fear about her girls. She insists that she couldn't do what she does without the help of her mother. Most importantly, both champion issues that affect the lives of real, average women - universal health care, equal pay, choice, etc. To do so is a recognition that real working women (not political wives or politicians) need policies that will help them maintain their families. What's the point of Palin's brand of feminism if it doesn't translate into real returns for average women?"
It can be noted that the professor is so passionate an Obama supporter that she also denounced Hillary Clinton as a phony feminist: "When she knocked back a shot and a beer in that bar in Pennsylvania, Mrs. Clinton ended any pretense of running as a feminist." She compared it to Michael Dukakis in a tank, a failed "macho stunt."

That was a moment I actually love. In the real world, women have to interact with men and for some reason, men react better to positive input. Its the oddest thing.
This woman is one of those "hostile" femninist which is exactly why I gave up on NOW years ago.
Does is sound like her cousin will be fair to you?

That's one of the most racist things I've heard in a while... and by racist, I mean prejudice against "white women who appear to have it together". Good God, is she serious?
What are women with ambition supposed to do? Show up in their pajamas every now and again to even the playing field for those (of any race, color, or creed mind you) that maybe aren't as interested in "putting it all together"? Seriously, this pisses me off. It's called HARD WORK, and it's not for everyone... that's fine, but deal with it. I'm not working my butt off to complete my Master's before I'm 26 and have already owned my own business because I feel the need to put forth the essence of "being put together" - it kind of fits in with those things... what are they called? Oh yes, GOALS.

"when women who are privileged present as though they have it all together, it’s offensive to black women."
Sherrilyn, sweetie?
Are you really saying this?
Black women can't get it all together? Black women are incapable?
No Black women are privileged? No Black women are feminists? No Black women are successful? All Black women are victims of White Women? White Women are offensive to Black Women?
Keep talking, honey.
You and the Lovely Michelle and Good Old Donna are doing a heck of a job!

You know!
While trying to paint white women in one way, she is doing a disservice to black women as well (who the heck died and appointed her spokesperson for all black women anyway).
It also shows just how much Professor Ifill knows about Sarah Palin. Palin was not exactly born with a silver spoon in her mouth.
I'll take down-to-earth Sarah Palin any day over these pretentious snots. With Palin, what you see is what you get.

This is the heart of the toxic message. Humiliation, being victimized, putting yourself down and submission is the correct path.
She is furious with Sarah for her strength and self confidence. When Hillary was strong and confident, they accused her of being a man, an "entitled bitch" and a monster. When Sarah is strong and confident, she's an imposter, a liar and offensive to 'real women'.
Professor Ifill needs therapy along with the other misogynistic detractors and attackers.

Those were the most ridiculous comments. This woman is a professor? First of all I don't like the idea that she is trying to speak for all black women. Secondly Sarah has talked repeatedly about how lucky she is to have the support of her family and that she couldn't do it with out them. And Sarah doesn't present herself like everything is so easy but she doesn't sit around and whine and complain either. To this woman I say F---- Off!. Sorry, it's early and I'm really sick of this sh*t.

Show up in their pajamas every once and while ... LOL I love it!!!
Yes, GOALS LOL :D
This woman's ignorant rant is why the educational system in this country is so screwed up! A fair number of teachers, and almost all our professors in the humanities are against success! They think people can't make it without ample gov't support. When people do succeed through hard work, and gasp, GOALS, they are put down, and demonized.
Yes Palin has support from her family. That's what people do in this country. And that's what families have been doing for millenia.
I think cousin Ifill is actually projecting her own insecurities onto Sarah Palin.
Complaining that someone is not as put together as she appears??? Does she have a hidden camera in Palin's purse?
Complaining that Palin is "satisfying her husband"? Wow, cousin Ifill is truly a man hater, huh?
Complaining that Sarah didn't further drag her teenage daughter into the media spotlight and use her pregnancy as an opportunity to talk about a non-issue ?
Wow, what a stupid lady. And she's drawing a government salary, probably for life.
Our tenure system in this country is truly disturbing.

"When she knocked back a shot and a beer in that bar in Pennsylvania, Mrs. Clinton ended any pretense of running as a feminist."
Apparently ignorant psuedo-feminist Sherrilyn Ifill hasn't heard that HRC DOES knock back shots on occasion with "the guys" - hello, she had a drinking contest with McCain once!
WASHINGTON, July 28 — Two summers ago, on a Congressional trip to Estonia, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton astonished her traveling companions by suggesting that the group do what one does in the Baltics: hold a vodka-drinking contest.
Delighted, the leader of the delegation, Senator John McCain, quickly agreed. The after-dinner drinks went so well — memories are a bit hazy on who drank how much — that Mr. McCain, an Arizona Republican, later told people how unexpectedly engaging he found Mrs. Clinton to be. “One of the guys” was the way he described Mrs. Clinton, a New York Democrat, to some Republican colleagues.
Mrs. Clinton and Mr. McCain went on to develop an amiable if professionally calculated relationship. They took more official trips together, including to Iraq. They worked together on the Senate Armed Services Committee and on the issue of global warming. They made a joint appearance last year on “Meet the Press,” interacting so congenially that the moderator, Tim Russert, joked about their forming a “fusion ticket.”
I guess the idea that Palin and HRC actually CAN rival men in "macho" pastimes such as hunting and knocking back shots is "unbelievable" to the professor. How incredibly sad for her.

I believe that the Obot attacks against Sarah are so vicious because they fear the McCain/Palin ticket. They cannot go against McCain so they are attacking Palin ad nauseum.

And since when is knocking back shots only a guy thing? I've been known to do it, for years, and not just with my guy friends.
It appears that Cousin Sherilynn is just not in touch with her own femnine side. Maybe no one wants to knock back shots with her, but its not because she's a woman, its because she's an ass and probably not much fun to be around.

I tell you this election has been the worst when it comes to women putting down other women. And I think we here have done a great job of supporting others, and handling the put downs. We've learned from Hillary that assertiveness will and has helped us!
There is no perfect woman, but there are those women who men think are perfect
because they let them think they are protecting the decision makers. Inequality is our problem. For Obama women, automaton is their problem, they are out to tell you he is the only right one for President, and everyone else is wrong!

At the heart of Sarah Palin's ability to "have it all" is the fact that she has a supportive husband. And at the moment, it is my understanding that since she was picked for VP candidate, he has become a full time Mr. Mom.
If feminazis (and I put this professor in that category, not all feminists) had any brains, they'd be pointing at Todd Palin and telling the men in their lives - "See, that's what it's like to be supporting me!"

Exactly!! I'm telling you, these women have officially lost the plot!! Contrary to accusations thrown at Hillary supporters, there was a study that found that in fact they tended to be, by and large, HAPPIER.
I think this also holds true for the feminists who are not threatened by Sarah Palin, but happy about her candidacy. Why do people have to agree with someone on everything to like them, celebrate progress, diversity of viewpoints and legitimacy to run for office?
I think that is why people who spew hatred and division like Rev. Wrong are so repellent to many PUMAs. We're instinctively drawn to practical solutions, mutual respect and cooperation.

LOL!!!! Michelle Obama? "Self-deprecating"???
I think that there's nothing wrong with Palin seeming to be able to "do it all." Some people - women and men - out there really are great handling many responsibilities at once (I'm not one of them, but all the more power to those who are!). I know some Moms who work, have several children, and participate in community service... I'm sure they don't get many hours of sleep at night, but how in the world could that be considered "offensive" to anyone??

Methinks cousin Sherrilyn doth protest too much...
What is it with these people? Is she jealous because she's not in Palin's place--running for VP? If so, she needs to get her butt out there and get involved. If she's jealous because Palin seems to 'have it all together', she needs to look at her life and figure out how to get it together herself (although I think being a professor is a pretty good gig and I don't see why she's so unhappy.)

Calling Sarah Palin "priveleged" is just the typical line of attack against Republicans, folks.
<sarcasm alert>
Everybody knows Republicans are rich white elitists who belong to country clubs and don't have to work for a living.
<sarcasm ended>
It's a tired old liberal lie.
Fact is, there are lots of Wal-Mart Republicans: ordinary folks who struggle to make ends meet, but don't think the government needs to bail them out.
But Wal-Mart Republicans, in the view of the MSM, are simply racist rednecks.
<sarcasm alert>
So, take your pick: you can be a rich white snob Republican or a redneck racist Republican. But there are no decent Republicans.

I think what she meant was Sarah is going up against Barack and how dare these White women keep getting in his way." that is an Obamabot attitude. It's offensive to me when they speak for me. I am a black woman who thinks Sarah is great and I identify with her more because of her generation. I understand what title 9 did for women. It set us free in a lot of ways because under Title 9 we were told we can do everything. Michelle is also 44 and she also benefited from title 9. We think differently and unfortunately NOW didn't grow with the times.

EXACTLY.
Sarah Palin took 5 years to finish her college. Why? She could not afford it without the college game teams money and the beauty pageant money. She grew up in a very low income household.
In fact, the large how you see the Palins living in was hand-built by her husband with a few of his friends pitching in.
I have a LOT of respect for the Palins because they are so in touch with the rest of us. They work with their hand. They have put in sweat into what they own. MEGA HATS OFF TO PALINS.

This is absolutely pathetic, When all else fails pull out the race card. Sorry but it is not Palins fault that according to Ifill Black women are Jelous, instead of pointing the finger at Palin, take a look at your self. It is not Palins fault that Black women are treated as so much flesh right within the black community. Blame the Hip Hop artists that paint just about every woman in every rap as some as a sex object, or a Ho. Blame the black commedians like cchris rock and others.
Look within your own community. People like Palin and others arn't happy being just talking heads like Ifill, Ophra, and so many others they want to give back to thier country and government and go into public service instead of sitting on a TV show and just bitching about this and that.
So if as Ifill says black women have identity issues well then it's no ones fault but thier own, and lseperate themselves up from the booty and Ho crowd.

Ifill is biased and she knows it but it's okay because Palin is kicking some Biden butt right now.

So she's moderating a debate and is insulted by the participants? What? Hmmm......

They're just bitter and cling to their degrees and lifestyles and they harbor antipathy towards those who are not like them........:p
I nearly fell out of my chair when I read your post. Best response I've seen ever. Clever turn of words.

"It's hard to be an average working mom, really hard. And when women who are privileged present as though they have it all together, it's offensive to black women."
Now that I think is racist. Is that woman trying to imply that black women don't have it all together? Because that's what I think she's trying to say. Yes its hard to be a working woman but seriously that statement is beyond stupid.
So women can't drink beer anymore?
Next thing I know she'll start saying women can't wear any pants anymore and just skirts! Then we shouldn't go to work anymore because its the mans burden to bring food to the table while we clean the house!
Is this feminism? Seriously, if that's the definition forget it.
