This coming election day, enlist volunteerrs to be election line walkers. Arm these people with your local voting requirements! These people will walk the line and inform those in line to have thier required document available and ready to submit. This would include tellin the line what those document are and what is allowed under state and county law if they do not have those documents. Line walkers are independent of the Poll Watchers that task should not be shared and needs to be seperate.

It would go something like this.

Ladies and gentlemen please have your Official Photo ID and Voters Registration card ready to submit to the poll workers. If you do not have a valiid ID or voters registration card you must ask for a Provisional ballot. According to state law you must vote by provisional ballot if you do not have valid identification. Instruction will be given to you on how to vote by provisional ballot. Thank You

This type of service is done at airports to help move people through security and in a number of other places. It is compeletly benign and only recites state rules and regulations. It alos helps the poll workers by having people ready and keeps them out of arguments from people claiming that they did not know they needed ID.

It is important that these people are given up to date and accurate facts on the state and county laws so they can not be accused of giving false information. Also no partisan message can be in thier talk.

This is something that would help quite a bit in keeping people honest this coming election day and help move the voting process along faster.

Anyone reading this who is part of a local campaign or is in contact with a local campaign please forward this suggestion to your area managers.

Thank You

I think it would be very important to find out if this is allowed in your respective state/county. As a poll worker in Ohio I can tell you this would really rattle the official workers and could lead to problems if it's not understood to be above board and within the laws. I think it would be great if it's allowed, but I can see the headlines now......McCain workers intimidating voters, etc. Personally, I've never heard of this being done. We were always very careful to ensure the campaign folks and/or signs were the prescribed distance away from the voting area.

Have you done this before? Is it a practice that has been condoned by your local offices? Seems like a good idea if permitted.

Obviously it has to be checked first. Also the role for these people has to be made very clear. This actually should be done by official poll workers but as we all know they are usually elderly people who do not have the stamina for this sort of thing. So you end up with huge lines, long waits, people getting into arguments with the workers inside.

Then because of the resulting confusion, frustration and mayhem makes it easier for the campaigns and civic groups to yell "voter irregularities"

With people getting prepaired and informed prior to entering the building things can go much smoother, and the poll workers not get overwhelmed.

The Democrats would probably balk at this because their goal is to cause mass confusion at the polls to thier advantage. This Idea still should be distributed to the local campaign Managers for consideration. I feel it is a good Idea and it is not up to us to decide. So please if you are involved with the Republican campaign please forward this to the area manager.

I can up with this Idea as a way for keeping everyone honest. The line walker can carry the state and county rules on handout sheets, They can have spanish and english written requirements and instructions.

This would have to be done totally without partisanship on the behalf of the line walker. No buttons to shirts and the handouts should probably not mention any party or mention both parties equally. As in this service provided by.

This approach helps keep those thinking of pulling a fast one at the polling station from claiming ignorance once inside. It takes any argument away. If they should start something either inside of afterwards they can not claim that they were not told.

Then poll workerrs can say (You were informed of the requirements before entering the building, you can either comply with the rules or you shall be removed)

I think in IN they have poll assistants that check your ID before you get a ballot. My poll place is very good on top of things. They always have been.

I'm not sure it's legal. I was just at a republican poll watcher training session this morning, and learned a lot about how strict things will be on Nov 4th. Every state is different. Here in Texas, the rules are: Along with the actual voters, the ONLY people LEGALLY allowed inside the polling place is the polling judge, 1 or 2 judge-appointed clerkes, and a max of 2 poll watchers, who have to have a signed document from the republican party, giving them express written permission to observe the procedural "goings on", on behalf of the republican party (and of course 1 or 2 watchers for the dems, too). Thats it. Not sure "line walkers" would be allowed.

What about other states? Are they similar?

Thats terrific, and how it should be done, so there are no surprises when people get inside, it is better for everyone concerned. I wish every state was this well prepared and efficient.

Take any air flight and usually you have people out at the lines telling people to have thier boarding passes and ID ready. You know take all metal objects out of your pockets etc.

This should be no different than that. it helps things go much more smoothly.

Sounds a lot like the training we have here in Ohio. That was my concern when I posted above. Poll workers are nervous about this whole election as it stands and I fear this type of action could lead to conflicts as well as bad press for those trying to do a good thing. I think in my state they would be required to be 100 feet from the polls and would not be allowed within the polling place.

FYI, for California folks, this is not legal. You don't have to have your registration or ID to vote here unless you're a first time voter who registered by mail. This would be regarded as voter intimidation around here.

Check your state laws.
