View Full Version : The word "BOT" needs to be retired from this forum IMO

It's as a bad as calling everyone you disagree with a troll. It seems to me groupthink has taken over here....we are not a cohesive unit isolated from the world where every person who disagrees with us is a troll or a bot...ARE WE? I hope not.

I would say resorting to name calling and calling someone a bot or a traitor goes beyond respectful disagreement.

Plus that word is overused and overplayed. To me it's just an insult devoid of any meaning.

What? These were fun terms to be used for Obama supporters. They've called Hillary much worse things. That's a classic word and has been around for long.

Obama supporters called Hillary "the bitch", "nutcracker", "the machine" etc. We never used such Obama campaign like derogatory comments. We used a word that was and still is viable. Most of those that supported Obama didn't know much about him. But the word bot was reserved for those that specifically campaigned for Obama while knowing close to nothing about the man.

If someone is obviously posting to cause trouble I think it is appropriate to alert other posters who may fall for the "bots" or "trolls" antics. most of us here were here to get away from the constant talk of how wonderful Obama was and not have to be harrassed if we didn't support him. This was a safe haven away from that. I can see that this will no longer be the cozy place it once was and those of us still not supporting or wanting to hear about Obama will likely have to go away if we don't want to "fall in line" which is what it is sounding like some here now want us to do.

There is no reason/need for anyone to "fall in line". If people don't support Obama, so be it. If they do, so be it. It amazes me that sometimes people are not able to "walk the walk" of engaging in intelligent disagreement. It's really not that hard to have a constructive conversation with someone who shares a different opinion. In an ideal world (and political forum), people of different opinions could co-exist in the same space. Just having one view is boring. 2 or more is better. So just like someone shouldn't be hated on for supporting a Republican, the next person should be hated on for supporting a Democrat. Accept it & enjoy the debate/disagreement! How about people start practising the philosophy of:

Mots are the new people who have decided it is fun to accuse long term members of being bots. The rabid McCain supporters.Like the one that called me a bot the other day.And then told me I was not supporting HRC.Once they learned the term bot they have ran with it and throw it out there at the least provocation.I am tired of it too.Once you've been called it so many times and manged to survive getting banned, you could care less if you never hear it again!

The problem is you point out all the known facts about obama and no one who supports him believes it. They deny it, all of it. This isn't about who has the best health care plan. This is about the fact that there are so many bad FACTS about this man that people who support him refuse to acknowledge. It is impossible to have a discussion about Obama with one of his supporters.

Murray hasn't allowed trollish behavior on this forum for the last 9 months and I don't know why it's being allowed now.

There is no trollish behavior in this thread. Just because someone disagrees with you does NOT make them a troll.

I'm honestly surprised to see the word traitor thrown around at what I thought was a nice forum (perhaps I grossly misjudged)....I don't understand why anyone would think that's OK.

And if we're defining trollish behavior as threads that disrupt I've seen hundreds of those in the last 4 months (threads that put down people for their religion, threads that categorize people...)...and I'm underestimating.

It's as a bad as calling everyone you disagree with a troll. It seems to me groupthink has taken over here....we are not a cohesive unit isolated from the world where every person who disagrees with us is a troll or a bot...ARE WE? I hope not.
1. "Bot" is a term used for individuals who were Obama supporters who were unable or unwilling to present a cogent and civil argument in support of their candidate and at the expense of demeaning the supporter of the opposite candidate.

2. It "was" and still "is" a relevant term. The GE just ended and Obama is not the president yet.

3. I have not read all the posts since Obama won but I would guess that the term "bot" is not being spewed non-stop by members.

4. Members needs time to grieve and some may still need to use the term "bot" to express their feelings.

5. An Obama win does not clear the slate, like shaking an etch-a-sketch, where everything is new and the past is forgotton. The past will not and should not be forgotten. The past being incorporated into the present is very different than forgetting the past.IMO it is not reasonable to expect everyone to hold hands and sing kumbuya to Obama. Why should he be treated any differently than any other politician?

7. Also troll seems as if it is still applicable. Once again, the election just ended. If someone is on the forum and appears to be inciting trouble for the sake of inciting trouble, I would call that troll behavior.

8. Also note what has happened to the JSND chat and also NQ. The BOTS were in full force in TROLL behavior acting like disrespectful thugs. If you don't want that associated with Obama, tough shit. Read the BOTS comments and how user names were stolen until it sounded like some posters were schizophrenic.

9. Change and behavior change does not occur within hours.

10. Many forum members have been campaigning for over a year and have done hand to hand combat on the ground. People have sacrificed so much for so long. It is disrespectful to suddenly want common terms tossd in the garbage.

11. At present the term 'bot' is not causing harm. Forum members still deserve respect now just like they did before Obama won. If you want to get rid of the term "bot" then the following words also have to go : a$$, moron, idiot........

12. Over time as the forum develops, terms like "bot" will probably go more to the road side or may become more geneeralized than to refer to only Obama supporters.

13. Free speech still exists.

14. Tolerance and respect are still expected.

Why is this such a hot issue at this very moment? What prompted raising the issue about the term bot? The election just ended.

It's unreasonable to expect that a forum that has been campaigning passionately against the Obama campaign for almost 10 months straight, would completely change within a few hours. Given a week or so, I believe this will be received in a more proactive way.

That is what I am trying to say. To expect change within hours is not realistic or respectful. I believe this will be a natural evolution because the members on this forum have a history of respect for other people's opinions. Not everyone has always agreed on issues. Then Republicans came on board and there was not agreement on all issues but people were respectful. Right now this is still seen as a refuge. One long battle has come to an end. Clinton Dems are in an unusual situation because this is a double defeat. It is hard to find people that understand why we chose to do what we did. This is still seen as a refuge and I think that for at least a couple of days that this could be respected. People don't have to read and comment on all posts or threads. Please let people work through this without undue interference.

I've always made an effort to use the word "bot" in a different context than "Obama supporter." I always assumed that "bot" was short for "robot" - as in, somebody who acts on autopilot regardless of external circumstances. Not all Obama supporters are "bots" and I've never considered the terms synonymous.

Emotions are running high right now. To be honest, I am really and truly sad. It's nearly 2am here, I can hear Obama supporters partying it up all over my block, and I feel like crying over all the effort and passion we've invested in this election. I know it wasn't wasted, but I'm still sad..

I think the problem may be that the start of the thread lacked context. From what I am figuring out as I read this thread, is that in another thread you expressed an opinion and in turn you were called a "bot" and a 'traitor'. If that is the case, this might have helped to have posted that information in the post to give people an idea of where this came from. Without context, I read the post and was offended that within hours of an Obama win that I am hearing the suggestion that "bot" needs to be tossed. I think this is one of the rudest things I've seen posted on this forum. And you're a moderator?

Not for long, I'm sure of it.

However, I am not going to sit here and applaude a man who systematically and deliberately (with the help of a corrupt party) dissected a woman who was the most capable person in this entire country, and give him kuddos for doing so.

Will not happen on my watch. And if my watch is up on this blog, so be it. But I will not stand by and watch MY country AND party be destroyed by corrupt people.

If you, for one minute you think I should calm down and "go with the flow", I've got another tale to tell you brother. Walk in my shoes. Until then,

Shut the Fyck up!

Give it some time. People are still steamed about the whole process, not just this night.

Sorry it's not OK. I think it shows what truly has been going on though...I see things very clearly now.

actually someone called Meggles that. That's what you get for defending people here or things you think are wrong.

I need to have my name, my posts, and all my threads gone from here...I don't want to be a part of something like this.

Please don't do this.

Systematically persecuting people who are not in line enough that's what. Or people that don't agree. Or people that defend others. It's very very clear what's going on.

That's coming from a few people here and there. It's not the culture of this forum imo.

I've always made an effort to use the word "bot" in a different context than "Obama supporter." I always assumed that "bot" was short for "robot" - as in, somebody who acts on autopilot regardless of external circumstances. Not all Obama supporters are "bots" and I've never considered the terms synonymous.

You mean, it's not an acronym for Barack Obama Troll?

And everyone in this forum feels the same:
DISAPPOINTMENT!!

But every single human has a different way to deal with disappointment.
Some are yelling at other people in order to feel better.
It is not okay, but it is the way it is.

Emotions are boiling here right now and no one has a clear head to conducts a rational discussion.

But within context it makes sense to remind people that people have varying view points of view and to continue to respect these differences as they have been respected in the past.
Talyn,

I think this is a misunderstanding and not necessarily meant to be a witch hunt. It sounds like you were attacked in another thread and it prompted this thread and not everyone reads every thread. The forum has always had different opinions and mostly these opinions have been respected. I felt the topic of this thread came out of the wild blue and was shocked. If you were attacked in another thread, I apologize. I am also not trying to attack you. Rather I am shocked and wanted to defend people I feel I came to know and who I think are in a lot of pain. I have so much respect for the folks and I can't bear to see them get hit anymore. I guess I am a little chihuahua that wants to protect all my friends in this big house of a forum. I am sorry.

Nah, you're probably right. In that case, I've been misusing the word for months now! lol

Sorry...but this just made me crack up. Reading this thread makes me want to pass the Mickey D's French Fries instead of the Orville Redenbacher...

I get talyn and meggles points. They have reason for concern. The anti-Obama message did go too far at times and opposite opinions were not welcomed, even against McCain. There were many threads I stayed away from such as the Frank Davis is Obama's father (based on no solid proof) and anything relating Muslims and Obama was taken too far. Is Muslim all of the sudden a bad thing? I've read some comments that were a bit ignorant.

So I sort of agree with talyn, there is too much one-sided rhetoric going on with no differing opinions allowed.

It depends on what your definition of Muslim is. LOL!

Seriously, no Muslims are not all bad but many Muslims are extremists and believe they must conquer the world--theirs is the only religion.

Do some research about how Muslims/Islam is taking over Eurpoe, etc.

In the name of political correctness we weren't allowed to talk about Obama's Muslim background (sure he could have converted to Christianity--very radical Christianity in Wright's church), but the point is the political ideology of many Muslims which is intermingled with their religion.

Religous self-righteousness by ANY faith has been the biggest reason for wars, hatred and genocide.

That is why I am an "unbeliever". I don't believe in any particular faith or that one is superior to another. But many millions of people do and therein lies a HUGE quagmire!

I'm well aware of the radical influence Islam has on the world. My parents escaped a country where this radicalism controlled the government. That's not what I'm referring to. I think he doesn't respect women because he's screwed up. His upbringing was abhorrent and he can't help that. But he can help who he is now and tell the truth about it. But he won't. Obama is all for Obama and not much else.

Have you read any of my probably 20-30 posts on this issue tonight? If not, I suggest you read them so you develop a more clear understanding of what is being asked of people. It's called accepting difference of opinion, rather than demanding everyone think the same way.

Accepting a difference of opinion is ridiculous when the other side is trying to force theirs on you, do you really think the BOTS are going to try to accept the difference of your opinion, hell no, they are now going to try to get you to think like them.

There are plenty of former Clinton supporters that are now Obama supporters, some who were on this forum, but left because they were unofficially no longer welcomed. There's plenty of reasonable and unreasonable Obama supporters. The unreasonable ones won't last too long here, not by force, but because there are other places more suited to their personality and beliefs. This shouldn't be a concern. We thought Republicans were unreasonable and all Clinton haters until some came to this forum and we saw that we had things in common with them (not just anti-Obama stuff, but real issues) and they brought with them great insight. I hope conservatives like Maverick and CountryFirst stay.

I believe that this thread needs to be sent on its way to the bit-bucket. There's a lot of anger here.

Future practices, since we're allowing all viewpoints here should include this:

Anyone that acts:

1) like the Obama supporters on DU do, and/or post the way many Obama supporters commented to anything they disagreed with

2) like the far-right fanatics on FR do, and get as self-righteous as the worst of them do

should fairly expect to be censured, and banned if they won't settle down and be respectful to everyone's viewpoint.

If you can't advocate Obama without trampling on everyone else, and if you can't admit that the man has flaws, then you're in the wrong forum. This includes not frothing at the mouth when at least half the forum think he's a crook and a cheater and should never have been a candidate.

If you can't talk about LGBT/womens/minority issues without getting nasty, this is not the place for you.

Fact is, with Muzza as administrator, this is not going to be a place that social conservatives are going to be very happy. I'm perfectly OK with that. My views on same are posted in the stickies if you look. However, if you want to play the race card here, you probably should think twice, as that won't make you any friends.

I'm sure I could think of more, but I think the point I'm making is that while new views will be allowed, the ground rules probably have not changed. If you can't be civil, GET OUT.

It's been a rough night for those of us fighting for McCain, and some harsh words have been said. Let's cool down, realize we're all Americans here, even if the President-elect is a man a lot of us think of as the 'Anti-American Candidate'. If you support him, and that phrase makes you froth at the mouth...reconsider staying here. You'll see it a lot for the next 4 years. We're as entitled to our opinions as you are yours.

Some people need to take a break. You know who you are. Talyn and SadState are two that really need to get away from this for a few days. Really. SadStateofAffairs, I enjoyed a lot of your posting, and I understand very much where you're coming from. Talyn, you have no idea how it looked to many of us when you posted this thread, especially without referencing the other thread. I searched a bit and found the 'traitor' references and stuff, but, really, the original post didn't tell us much, and made you not look very good. I understand what went on now, but I think you need to just let this issue go and continue on. Tomorrow's another day, and things will be calmer.

I agree. No one should have to fall in line if they don't agree with Obama and his tatics on winning the election. You will never get the same from the Bot forums if McCain won.

Has anyone taken a peek at the other forums..it's disgusting what they're saying. You would think there would be more post celebrating but noooo..there's way more disgusting posts about McPalin and their supporter's.

Nows the time to keep the pressure on Obama during his term and seeing to it that he's not elected for a 2nd term. We can't have a healthy forum the next 4 years if the Obots takeover this forum.

Does anyone think for one second that the DU forum will now let you post your opinion on Obama during his term if you don't agree..get real. You will be called all kind of names. Obama can do no wrong so whatever you say will be trounced and then you will be booted off the forum.

So why should we give them what they won't give us !

Not for long, I'm sure of it.

However, I am not going to sit here and applaude a man who systematically and deliberately (with the help of a corrupt party) dissected a woman who was the most capable person in this entire country, and give him kuddos for doing so.

Thanks!

Now, to comment on other posts: note that I never once said anyone should 'fall in line'. Look back at my posts and you'll not see me doing so either. However, if civil discourse with people who are not united with you in a common cause is beyond you, then, yes, it's time for you to leave.

The election is past now, and it's time for changes. For the reasons outlined in the stickied thread at the top, I'll stick around here for now. I didn't 'fall in line' on FR, and I won't 'fall in line' on here. Not my way. You *will* hear about the Anti-American President from me. If you can't handle that without being civil, too bad for you. However, if you can be civil and willing to debate/discuss, then I can tolerate that. I remember the 'old' liberals that you could talk issues with, instead of the current kind that make me think of the 13-year-olds in online games. I hope we can find some of those again.

I saw a mention of 'politically correct'. That's not me. A spade is a spade. Period. However, there is also things known as manners. You can't expect the other people to have manners if you won't. I already posted that any DUers who come here and expect to act like they do there should expect to be shown the door, and quickly. If they're not shown the door, then many of us will be gone. That should take care of that issue.

Bravo SSOA.

This thread has been unproductive and is uncessesary at this time.

But the word bot was reserved for those that specifically campaigned for Obama while knowing close to nothing about the man.

and don't forget the '****' word for Sarah...amongst many other disgusting name calling by the bots.... actually 'bots ' is too good a name for these sexist 'pigs' and I am really insulting pigs when I say that. It will only get worse and everyone has to be on their toes and not fall into lethargy and forgiveness towards these nasty pieces of .... you know what!
