First, Welcome! We are currently undergoing a HUGE change on this Forum.
It was started in support of Senator Clinton. And that was it.We did not allow anyone here who was not in support of her and her candidacy. The admin had closed the forum to new members as we were getting people whose sole purpose was to attack our views and beliefs. It worked well for us for many months and then we realized she was not our nominee and we had to change direction.
Most of us were vehemently opposed to Barack Obama and our focus became ensuring he would not get elected.Along the way, many of us,not all, threw our support to McCain. Some were not on board with either, and left or just decided they could deal with our new plan and write in a third party. The admin also opened membership and we gained quite a large number of conservatives. Our main agenda has been the defeat of Obama. We are NOT evil,we just think differently then some of you.
So,we lost twice and here we are.For a short time, membership was opened up and you all have signed on.Some of you are in the same boat we are. Some of you are Obama supporters. That is fine, but here is the problem as I see it.I am not speaking for the entire forum, know that! Just myself and a few others.
Trying to be a more moderate forum overnight is difficult. If you were a long time member of a sight that was only for Obama members and he had lost, can you even fathom letting in the McCain people?? I am guessing that would be a resounding,"Not on your life"!! So please,I am begging you, keep in mind that many of us are very raw over this.Coming here and posting that our beliefs and the candidates we backed, are fundamentally wrong, and calling us "honey" and "sweetie" before you rip into us is cold hearted and juvenile at best. This is not the way to unite the two groups in any way, shape or form. This is why you are receiving nasty replies to your posts. Our feelings are hurt.As much as you wanted Obama to win,we wanted Hillary to win,and then McCain. Many of us have received a double whammy these last few months. At least take this into consideration before you post.
A large number of us have spent more time, and in some cases money, than you can even imagine trying to get our candidates elected. It is unfair to come here and expect to be received with open arms when you say some of the things I have seen posted.I am pleading with you to please lay off bashing us and our candidates and beliefs. We want a more moderate place, but this is not helping us to get there!
We have been called the most vile of names imaginable by some of you. Please,do not insinuate that we are racist for not supporting Obama. We would have no problem voting for the right AA,we just don't feel he is that person.

Mary, I just want to say thank you for allowing me to join. I'm a Republican but I've followed you guys since Hillary was edged out and I've discovered that I love PUMAs.

Thank you all so much for your support of Sen. McCain and Governor Palin. Both Sarah and Hillary were treated very disrespectfully by the media and by some members of their respective parties. This treatment of female politicians must stop and we all have a stake in being sure that it does.

I'm here to be friendly and discuss issues. Civility is the cardinal rule for political discussion. No one ever found common ground by being disrespectful.

Our country is in for some major changes and I believe those of us who are alarmed by the prospect of those changes will need to pull together.

Again, thank you for having me and I promise to do my best to contribute in a positive way.

Mary, I want to ditto Lynn's post above me as she said exactly what I would have said, other than I'm an Independent.

I respect this forum for what it is - it's why I have spent the last two months of my life here. :) Thankfully registration opened up and I could register to say HI!

I promise to be respectful - I know how hard you all have worked, and you've encouraged me to donate my time and money to help McCain's campaign (I came right after the Dem convention).

Keep up the fight!

Some of us have been waiting for a loooong time to join, so please don't assume all new members are Obama plants or even supporters. I introduced myself last night as a Hillary Clinton supporter from western New York State who has worked for her since her first run for the Senate. So I have been actively supporting her for as long as anyone else here. To sum up: Please don't tar all new members with the same brush. (I'm also here because I want to be a part of any agenda that can fight future attacks on women candidates. What's happening to Palin right now deserves nothing short of a concerted effort to counter it.)

I am not a Democrat but believe we should all be PUMAs, putting country before party.
I have been visiting since Obama won the primary and with impressed by the way you conduct your discussions with civility and respect. I plan to do the same.
It must be devastating to your hearts and souls into two back to back campaigns and lose them both. I can’t imagine how you feel.

Thank you Mary for your thread your comments have always been fair and to the point. I joined this forum just after the primaries as a firm supporter of Hillary Clinton. My reasons why I hoped, prayed for team McPalin to win last Tuesday remain the same today.

Thank you for the welcome.

After I joined, I was shocked and saddened, that the first thread I visited appeared to be very much like a war zone, so I understand your concerns.

I also understand that trust is an issue and your concern that new members have a hidden agenda (or maybe not so hidden). But I believe that if you conducted a poll asking why new comers are here and they were honest it would be that they see kindred spirits in the original members of this forum. I hope I am not wrong.

Hi everyone! I am a conservative who has been lurking since Hillary lost the primaries (should have registered when I had the chance! :)). I searched and found this site for my son, who is a PUMA all the way. I felt so bad for him, as this was his first presidential election and he was so excited. I was not a Hillary supporter, but I, too, was completely appalled at the sexist way she was treated.

This is the MOST civil and respectful forum I have ever visited! Hats off to mods and members alike. I am so looking forward to respectful exchanges of ideas. I'll play fair even with Obama supporters, but Obots are a different breed altogether. If one gets in my face like Dear Leader commanded, I'll fight back! :D

As a Republican, I want to say thank you to all the PUMA's who worked so hard for McCain/Palin. It was appreciated very much! Country before party always!

My apologies for taking a leave of absence since the election results. It was necessary to preserve sanity!

Let me ask why the Forum is opening to new members so SOON after the election especially if there have been bot attacks on the Forum members??

Don't we need time to support one another during our grieving period before allowing unsupportive new members into the Forum?? When we've had time to allow the results sink in, then open the Forum. We'd also have a better idea of the direction we want the Forum to take.

Just putting this suggestion out there.

I am a new member and totally understand your position. I would be happy to not be able to post during your grieving and healing process. In the interest in bipartisanship :) , is there a compromise solution where a section/forum would be created where new members would be restricted from entering, or some other solution along those lines?

Thank you! I am a newbie here, too, but I have been reading (and wishing I could post) since the Palin was nominated. I went from being a Hillary hater to tolerating her since she's been in the Senate to respecting her over the last year. See you're the type of Obama supporter we can accept here. You're polite and don't try to shove this Obama stuff in our face.

And Prop 8 passing is a damn shame. Inequality is never acceptable. It wasn't in the case of "seperate but equal," and it shouldn't be here either.

Thanks, Mary! I came here as an ardent Hillary supporter, then John and Sarah supporter. I think Hillary, John and Sarah are the best people to lead this country, which they have all been doing in their positions all along. They have character and class. So does this forum, thanks to our beloved founder Murray and the many mods who have worked to hard to keep civil discourse a bedrock principle.

Primary/caucus/general election registration and voter reform, campaign finance reform and honorable treatment of female candidates are my top three concerns. Free and fair elections, financial transparency and respect for women MUST be any candidate's priorities from now on, IMO.

IMO. That's it--my opinion and the freedom to express it equals America.
This forum guaranteed me Freedom of Speech. I am forever grateful--it made this election year bearable for me.

Mary, Thanks for starting this thread so the newbies can introduce themselves and share their perspective.

I am a republican who has been lurking and spending an UNNATURAL amount of surfing this site over the past couple of months. Like some of the other newbies, I have been dying to join and participate, but was unable to. I was pretty acceptng of Muzza's decision because one of the things that made the forum so great was that it was well moderated. (The fact that I had no choice helped also..lol) Anyway, I am also not here to cause trouble.

As a republican, I had no problem voting for McCain and am quite distressed by how the election turned out. I really thought McCain would win and certinly did not foresee Obama winning so handily.

I think this forum played a very positive role in this election by bringing together people who have a lot more in common than they thought. I have been pretty impressed by how many people I saw put country before party. I now see that there are many more reasonable democrats (or maybe now former democrats) than I previosly thought. I hope that this forum will be able to continue in this sprit.

I have to say I have just for the first time since the election had a cry and a deep sigh of releif that there still is a place to talk with sane people, and I am so glad to know that repubs still are coming here to find common ground. I couldn't imagine Mary biting, unless, of course, she gets royally pissed off. So it's probably better to stay on her good side just in case. :)

Welcome to all the newbies! Well I mean, all the well intending ones. This thread sounds more like the forum I have grown to love. I have to say I have just for the first time since the election had a cry and a deep sigh of releif that there still is a place to talk with sane people, and I am so glad to know that repubs still are coming here to find common ground. I have always wished for the two sides to work together as friends. I thought that was just wishful thinking untill I saw it happen on this forum. I have alot of respect for Murrey and all the mods that help to keep it respectful. :)

I agree. This forum and the respect shown to each other is what will help this country as we move forward. It is important that we are able to find common ground and our mods are extremely fair. Murray has put in so much time and effort. I want to thank them for all their hard work.

Welcome. I look forward to your posts. I would like to ask you a question. Why do you think some Republicians who did not support John McCain did not understand that not voting could create an Obama win? I hope you do not think this is an unfair question, but with your profession I am really interested in your response.

Seawave, I don't think this in an unfair question at all. To be honest, I don't know what happened with the Republicans. I suspect there is just not as many of them as there were in elections past, probably due to changing demographics and frustration over the Bush years. As far as the Republicans I know, many were not thrilled with McCain, but perked up considerably after Palin was picked as his VP. They all voted for McCain. Even republicans who did not know about Obama's crooked dealings, asociations, etc would not vote for him because of his extreme liberal policies. My sense is that any republican that voted for Obama probably lost their republican ideology and viewpoint a while ago.

There is a somewhat kooky element of the far right whose behavior is difficult to predict. From what I can see, they tend to go for third party candidates and can be very rigid and tempermental when they don't get a candidate who doesn't closely match their (usually kooky) agenda. I suspect many of these people did not vote for McCain, but don't know if these people really vote Republican anymore anyway.

As an aside, I think the pick of Palin for VP was brilliant. I think McCain would have been trounced if he had chosen anyone else; she was the only reason he was in the race at all. (I suspect McCain knows that by the way.) McCain was able to solidify the base, raise money and make a gesture of appreication to the PUMA's all at the same time. I don't take too seriously rumors that Republicans are "turning on" Sarah. A few turncoat staffers who are trying to cover their rears and a few Romney surrogates do not represent "the Republicans" in my book. She is a big part of the future of the party and I think most Republicans are happy about that.
