Hello. My name is Rob. I live in East Tennessee and I'm a bleeding heart liberal. I was born in Louisiana, but raised in Clearwater, Florida. Two weeks after graduating from Countryside High School in 1997 I boarded a bus en route to basic training at FT Jackson, South Carolina. After nearly seven years in the Army, I completed my six year obligation and was honorably discharged.
Presently I attend Pellissippi State Technical Community College where I major in Video Production Technology. I hope to one day make a living as a wildlife documentarist.
My favorite band that still makes music is Pearl Jam. My favorite band that doesn't is Pink Floyd. I'm also a big fan of Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix. I love watching movies and own over 300 DVD's. Some of my favorite films are Rain Man, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Good Will Hunting, Apocalypse Now, and Full Metal Jacket. I'm not affiliated with any political parties. I consider myself an American. Also, I'm agnostic.

I think I've made it pretty obvious I support Obama. I am not an OMG HE'S GUNNA B DA BEST PREZ EVAAAA!!!!!!!!111 kind of Obama supporter but I am very happy to see that he won. I think most of you will be presently surprised to find America is still standing in 4 years. Perhaps even better than it was before.

Don't get too close!! Some great footage you have there.
This interest in wildlife might explain some of your distaste for SP.
Did you ever see the movie of the guy who went to live with the grizzly bears but didn't come home? I thought it was a fascinating movie, but also bizarre/disturbing on some other levels.

Did someone call? :) Here I am!
I was an early Hillary supporter. This was very early in the primaries when there was a whole line-up of candidates. I eventually moved my support to Obama. I live in Minnesota and was there the night he obtained enough delegates to move forward (Don't shoot me please).
I had not really participated in a campaign since Dukakis in college. I guess I'm showing my age. Sure, I donated or put a magnet on my car for others, but hadn't really participated. This year I spent time at the offices and worked on the voter protection program. I know there was controversy, earned or not, about Acorn, etc. This wasn't about that. Instead this was a very organized 'poll watcher/challenger' effort. After spending time training and receiving certification, many of us spent time at each polling site on election day. The approach was simply to ensure that everyone who should have a right to vote was able to vote. If there was a republican challenger making a voter challenge, we were there to defend. Our actual purpose was *not* to challenge but rather ensure that every vote counted.
I do have hope for the future. But I also know what is realistic and what is not. And I've been around long enough to know that campaign promises change with times and circumstances.
Anyway, that's me. I will also add that I thought the discussions of sexism and racism were compelling this season. I'm an African American woman and there were times when I wondered what I was missing. There were also times when I wondered why other didn't see what I saw. One thing I was thankful for is that we were talking about it. We were able to talk about in situations where it would normally be unheard of. Let's keep talking about it in an open way that gives some credit to those who have experiences to share.
Edited to Add: I don't hug pandas... black or white, no panda hugs here!

Awww, now I'm scared.
Kidding! I'll be okay. There are some things I just won't participate in. And at the end of the day, it's not that serious. We all still have lives to lead that are not rooted in our computer screens. If I can have a friend for years who was a lifelong republican before this election, then I can appreciate the differences on an internet forum. I learn something from every single person that I meet even if that one something is 'you surely are a, ummm special, human being'.
I'll keep the armour within arm's reach though.

Let's see where to begin...I was a Hillary supporter at the beginning of the primaries. Over time I gradually came to feel that Obama better represented me personally. I voted for Obama in my state's caucus, with the clear understanding that I would be happy with whichever Democrat won the nomination.
I also feel the need to point out that, despite my change to Obama, I always did and continue to defend Hillary against those who choose to disparage her. I thought she was an excellent candidate who did make some mistakes in her campaign, but that does not change the deep respect and admiration I have for her. I do not condone any slamming of her, especially since most of it seems to have a clearly sexist tone to it.
Anyhow, like I said, I would have been happy with either a Clinton or Obama win. I could never, ever support McCain/Palin, both because they represented Republican idealogies with which I do not agree, and because while I respect McCain for his years of service to his country, I have to admit to an aversion to Palin and most of what she stands for.
So here I am. What am I looking for? Well, although I am very liberal, I don't visit sites like Daily Kos or Democratic Underground because they are too one-sided, strident, and boring. I live in a conservative state, I have many conservative friends, and we realize that we are not the enemy to each other, but rather that we just have different core ideals. I like this site because I sense a growing desire from members to understand each other, rather than label and disregard the other side.
I am aware of the history here and I am trying to be respectful and not push the envelope too far, too fast. However, I do appreciate the conversation and perspective from others in the forum. So...thanks! :)

That's a wise approach :) It's always important to be mindful of the history/context of a forum when becoming involved in it. Some people launch in without knowing what they are getting into!

I'm a Republican who ultimately voted for Obama. Had Hillary won the Democratic primary, I would have voted for her as well.
I couldn't support McCain/Palin, for a variety of reasons that don't need to be re-hashed here. Between Obama and Hillary, I suppose I preferred Obama, but the differences weren't significant in my opinion. I know the standard HCF poster, circa July/August of this year would vehemently disagree (and some still do), I never put much stock in the arguments that Obama "cheated" to win the caucuses or that he's all fluff and no substance. I do think he carries certain somewhat undesirable trades as a politician that pretty much all of them do, including Hillary.
In the end, I was satisfied to see the Republican party get the wake-up call it needed. I'd like to see Romney rise (and Palin go away) to lead that party. If he does, they have a shot in 4 or 8 years. If it's Palin - good luck.

WOW!! I have heard of your kind but never actually met one!!
Welcome to you!
Were there many Republicans that voted for Obama?? I am a Dem that voted for McCain. I know, I figured it out. I am actually happier with Obama at this point than I was on election day. Not loving him at all, but happy with some of his choices, unhappy with others. As I would be with any POTUS.

Thanks! As far as Republicans go, I'm extremely moderate, so I'm definitely willing to cross party lines. I always have been (voted for Bill Clinton twice). With respect to Republicans that voted Democratic this year, I am fairly certain that there were a strong number of moderates that voted the way I did. The more "firmly" right, not nearly as much. Interestingly, I had a conversation with my dad (who is 73) and despite being a life-long Republican, he couldn't get excited about McCain and thus didn't vote for him. He actually thought McCain was too old. To paraphrase him: "I wouldn't have the energy for the job, so I don't know how he would."
I'm fine with Obama. Like you, I like some of his choices, but not all. History tends to show that some of our most effective presidents - Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR, Reagan, Clinton, to name just a few - possessed superior communications skills. I'm hanging my hopes on Obama's abilities in that area helping to pull us out of our national funk. That's overly simplistic, but consumer confidence and the national collective psyche in general need a boost after eight years of general deterioration. It can't hurt to have someone with the ability to inspire at the helm.

I agree. A positive attitude is a must at this time. I will admit to being vehemently opposed to Obama and did participate in some of the cracked theories that you see here now. Lucky for me, I realized that the whole thing is very counterproductive and all it was doing was depressing me. Plus, I live with an Obama supporter, so someone needed to give a little and it was my turn! It has helped having the Obama people here to converse with. They are not demons, or evil. Just people much like myself, that have the same views, just liked a different candidate.
Nice to have you here, and Happy Christmas, or whatever you may be celebrating today!

I'm in Medford. We have had nada as far as snow goes. A couple of times we have had 2 in. at the most. My nephew lives in the Capitol Hill area and he is damn sick and tired of watching bumper cars out his window every day!! His apartment overlooks where those buses collided.
Have a great weekend! Headed north to Eugene to see the in-laws for the weekend. Not looking forward to that drive!
