FULL STORY (http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-9794.html)
Speaking of the Vatican...
Hundreds of people protested outside the Vatican City on Saturday in support of a declaration calling for the universal decriminalisation of homosexuality to be presented at the UN next week.
Some wore a noose around their neck, others held candles and displayed rainbow flags.
They were protesting the Vatican's hostile stance towards the declaration, which is being presented by France on behalf of the EU.
Monsignor Celestino Migliore, the Holy See's permanent observer at the UN, said last week that the declaration could be used to force countries to recognise same-sex marriage.
"If adopted, they would create new and implacable discriminations," he said.
"For example, states which do not recognise same-sex unions as 'matrimony' will be pilloried and made an object of pressure."
More than 90 countries outlaw same-sex relations in all circumstances.
The maximum punishments range from a few years jail to life imprisonment.
In nine countries, or regions of countries, the mandatory punishment for homosexuality is death by execution.
There is no mention of same-sex marriage in the UN declaration.
Only a handful of countries recognise gay and lesbian marriages, among them Canada, Belgium and South Africa.
Aurelio Mancuso, national president of Italian gay rights group Arcigay, said the Vatican was wicked.
"What happened today is extremely important," he said after the protest.
"LGBT people have launched a global campaign in defence of life and dignity of thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender citizens and the wickedness of Vatican politicians must not prevail over the human rights."

Good for them for taking a stand.
The Catholic church needs to get the message that they are NOT in charge of our lives, Catholic or not and I personally tired of having their so called morals and values shoved upon the entire world as if they the moral police of the entire universe.
Ok... I just have too...

My pleasure.
Being a Catholic I'm slightly offended by the Vatican and the Catholic Church is becoming the boogieman of the LBGT community.
But on the other hand being a member of a family with more then one member of the LBGT community I am thrilled that progress is being made to end discrimination against LBGT's and bring attention to that cause on a world stage.
Again another fine demonstration of why I am in between the two major political parties.

catholics won't even allow women priests yet. That puts them over 40 years behind the times if you ask me. So we shouldn't expect the catholics to take an accepting attitude toward gays and lesbians anytime soon.

That might explain why I left Catholicism behind about 15 years ago.
Generally speaking, however, I think Catholics are less bigoted than some other so-called Christians. But maybe I am biased (favorably) towards Catholics only because I was raised in a Catholic environment.
There are some truly wonderful people who are Christian.
There are some also truly horrible people who are "Christian".

I grew up in a large Roman Catholic family. I also survived 12 years of Parochial School, including an all-girls High School.
Thankfully, we were blessed with parents who did not subscribe to the anti-gay doctrine.
I still consider myself Catholic, but only in a more cultural sense. It's a part of who I am... even though I don't agree with all of it's teachings (and don't even get me started on the History).
Little story about calmati and a couple of gay dudes she loves:
We had two men as next-door neighbors for over 10 years. They were a gay couple in a committed long-term relationship. The longer we knew them, the more they became part of our family. When my father passed away, they took over the preparation of the food and seating for the wake... we never asked, they just did it. At the last minute, we needed two pallbearers to replace two unreliable relatives. We didn't have to ask -- they were there for us.
A month later, when my mother passed away (rough year), they were there for us again. Always anticipating what we needed, never complaining... So, when I spoke to the priest -- and mind you, I had to pick my words carefully -- I SPECIFICALLY asked that these two men be acknowledged and thanked during the eulogy (which he did). Boy, did I piss off a couple of "conservative" relatives! And, I didn't give a rat's ass! The only people I cared about were MY FAMILY. That included my parents, my brothers, my sisters, my wonderful neighbors, and a handful of Aunts and cousins. I knew who was there for us over the last 10+ years. The rest... I don't talk to anymore. Life is too short to waste on hateful people.
It's funny. I don't really think "gay" when I think about them. I just know them as "Bob" and "Fred" (not their real names). It's hard to say in text... but I mean I don't consider them as "gay" first and "people" second. They're just really wonderful people whom I love. But that's the way it should be with ALL people. No matter if you're Catholic, or Atheist, or gay, or hetero, or black, or Hispanic... All that should matter is that are you a good person with a good heart. It seems so simple. And it hurts me to wonder why that is so hard for others to comprehend.

The history of the Catholic church is pretty bad!

I wouldn't describe myself as "Catholic" anymore, but I agree (like you said) that it's still a part of me. I am sure some of the more positive things about Catholicism have been incorporated into my identity/character. So I am not one for blocking out my history. Occasionally (very occasionally) I have thoughts about going back to church, but that has not (til now) translated into any kind of action.

Your view is not "funny" at all - it's healthy & just.
Discrimination is always fueled by viewing people not as human beings, but as some kind of "other" entity first and foremost. Gays aren't people - they are gays. Blacks aren't people - they are blacks. Illegal immigrants aren't people - they are illegals. Only when people focus on the HUMANITY which is common to all do they "get it".

I haven't been back since shortly after high school. I've read the book -- MANY TIMES. I get it. I'm done. But, I still do a presepio at Christmastime and I still send cards, and proudly display my mother's beautiful Madonna figurine... some things will always be a part of me.
