View Full Version : If you could move anywhere in the world (outside of the USA), which country would you make your new home & why?
Discuss!
(Obviously if you don't live in the USA, answer according to your starting point!)
I never really thought about it! My first thought would be the Irish or Scottish countryside because it's so beautiful and looks quite and peaceful from PBS and pictures, of course.:o
France. Why? I've always loved French culture. That being the language, art, and history. :D Not to mention places like Aix-en-Provience are BEAUTIFUL!

When I was in middle school I used to trick store clerks. I'd ask "Do you accept Hawaiian Dollars?"
9 times out of 10 they'd say no and I'd laugh at them.

My Dad sent me an email awhile back about a fast food place that wouldn't take $2 bills because they thought there was no such thing and that they were counterfeit!! They went as far as to bring in the manager and then called security on the poor man.
Cracked me up.

Amsterdam is beautiful. I have lots of great memories from a trip there!
I've been considering taking a position in London but haven't quite talked myself into it, yet. But it's on the list of places I'd live.

Let me guess, that was after they moved here, right?? See the intelligence level I grew up around??I think it was one of those mass emails, but let me give you two examples that happened to me personally...
I called one of the banks I have an account with and to make a long story short, I asked the customer service rep if she had any rolls of Hawaii State quarters. She said, sure...here's a toll free number you can call to get foreign currency! I was like, what did you just say? She realized how stupid she was and told me to call my branch...UGH!
I called another customer service rep a few days later because my branch said they didn't have any...and I asked a different woman about the Hawaii State quarters and she was all flustered and said, I'm sorry ma'am but I don't understand...are you telling me that Hawaii has their own state quarter? I said, it's part of the 50 state quarter program and where have you been for the last 10 years this program has been going on? She put me on hold, for quite sometime, and directed me to the proper channal...
*Here's you sign* X 2
Sorry...carry on!
I would move to the area of Toronto, Canada. I love the place.Canada was my 2nd choice...:)
Why?
It's a very interesting and stimulating city.
In my opinion it is far more multicultural, multiracial, multiethnic than NYC.
It is the gateway to Europe.
And it has loads of history and character.
Also, it has the Olympics coming up in 2012 so, like most Olympic cities, they will be working on some major improvements to the city which can only make it ever better!

You should've seen my face...I was in such shock, I couldn't utter the words again so Ed could share in my emotions...I kept slapping my forehead...amazing! What has happened to this 'customer service world' we live in? I'm not joking. It never ceases to amaze me. Sometimes I wish I could live in theses peoples heads once in awhile, then maybe I could understand.

I agree. It was the first city I visited outside of North America. Years ago (pre 9/11), I saw a crazy airfare for $225, including taxes, roundtrip. So I immediately bought the ticket. Then I used a service to get a passport in 3 days. I hopped on a plane and went to London alone. My friends thought I was nuts. But it was a pretty incredible few days and I felt entirely comfortable. There was a great mix of people. Wonderful city!
After that a few others wanted to come along. So, we watched airfares and I had company for Paris, Lisbon, Amsterdam, London again, etc for long weekends.
The job is still a possibility. I just have to make up my mind. Thanks for the input. I hadn't considered the improvements for the Olympics.

London is a complex mix of old and new money.
It's extremely posh in some respects, and downright dirty/gritty in others!
And it's all mixed in together.
That said, it's not the safest city around and there are some very rough areas and scary crimes that occur there. It's not a city where one can afford to be clueless and careless.

Understood. I stuck to the tourist spots during my first trip since I was alone. When I went back later with a few friends, I saw more. One of my friends insisted that we go to a club called "Heaven". I remember walking in and a guy immediately came up to me and said "You're American right?". Hmmm... it was a fun night, though. I just remember that I made *lots* of new friends.

I didn't know there was a website. Porn Idol? LOL! I hadn't thought about that trip in so long. I just remember that it was incredibly late when we left. We completely forgot about the time.
I remember dancing with 4 men who all somehow lost their shirts during the song. Yeah, yeah I know it's a gay club and they weren't for me. :( But damn if it wasn't fun. I think I need to book a trip back to London now.

Israel. No questions. It's the only other country in the world where I am "home", plus it's beautiful (I've been there). And I'm passionate their politics so I'd be able to become involved, and since I'm very passionate about my Judaism, I'd have no problems making Aaliya.
Canada would be another place too. I've been there twice and I love it. I'm going back next Sept. on my cruise to Nova Scotia. I can't wait.

There are 2 places I love.
Japan - I Lived in Okinawa for a year, and the I've been to the mainland a few times also. Climbing Mt. Fuji was the biggest highlight of all! The Japanese people are incredibly hospitable and friendly.
Roatan Island, Honduras - Gorgeous! Mountain views, crystal clear waters, what more could a gal ask for?

Tanzania is beautiful. Just not anywhere near Dar es Salaam.
You can stand in one of the parks and 50 yards away from you a line of zebras and wildebeasts will go by. Or nestle against a tree and watch a troop of babboons for hours.
Also am getting more curious about Belgium and the Netherlands due to their
more enlightened social policies.
Ireland's also pretty cool. And Scotland is supposed to be gorgeous- didn't make it there. Scotland's winters are supposed to be brutal and I'm getting tired of winter so probably not Scotland--just would like to visit.

1st choice: greece.
i love being near the water, although i do not swim or boat. love sunny climates, although i do not sun bathe and sleep days anyway. and i dont think they have any poisonous bugs. but i could be wrong. lol. it is warm there, the guys are nice to look at, and best of all, the place is the gold standard for the study of ancient history and of archeological digs. i love ancient history. and it is close enough for me to visit italy, france, austria, and then to my family's homeland of scotland. after that, i could visit egypt. talk about ancient history.
2nd choice: tahiti. peaceful and small. drawback: bugs.
3rd choice: belize. wildlife and rain forests, and i think they speak spanish so i might actually finally learn it. lol. drawback: bugs.
in reality: canada because i can drive there. dont like boats and planes. lol or mexico, also because i can drive there, but mexico, also, has bugs.
did i mention that i dont like bugs??????????:eek:
really like greece, but someone would have to drug me and knock me out and move me. lol.
if that happens, i'll see you in the netherlands when i visit, muzza. cheers. swan.

I would not want permanently live outside of the US but if I had to it would be Australia.
Great surf, absolutely beautiful, similar laws, culture, and taxes, and close to a lot of great places like Polynesia, New Zealand, and Asia.
Another country would be Switzerland. Probably the most Capitalist country in Europe, they have more guns then we do, and they are at the heart of West Europe. Your a days train ride to pretty much all the capitols of Europe. Not to mention great recreational activities and beautiful countryside.
