A spring 2007 newsletter from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) named Meeks one of the "10 leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement". The newsletter cites him as both “a key member of Chicago's ‘Gatekeepers’ network, an interracial group of evangelical ministers who strive to erase the division between church and state” and “a stalwart anti-gay activist… [who]… has used his House of Hope mega-church to launch petition drives for the Illinois Family Institute (IFI), a major state-level ‘family values’ pressure group that lauded him last year for leading African Americans in ‘clearly understanding the threat of gay marriage.'”
The SPLC newsletter also noted that, "Meeks and the IFI are partnered with Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council and the Alliance Defense Fund, major anti-gay organizations of the Christian Right. They also are tightly allied with Americans for Truth, an Illinois group that said in a press release last year that ‘fighting AIDS without talking against homosexuality is like fighting lung cancer without talking against smoking.’"
On a more personal level, Meeks has reportedly blamed "Hollywood Jews for bringing us Brokeback Mountain" and actively campaigned to defeat SB3186, an Illinois LGBT non-discrimination bill, while serving in the Illinois state legislature alongside Obama. According to a 2006 Chicago Sun Times article, his church sponsored a "Halloween fright night" which "consigned to the flames of hell two mincing young men wearing body glitter who were supposed to be homosexuals."
So much hate coming from Obama. Sad.
Add to the LONG list of disastrous Obama associates....

There is so much hate speech and predjudice from Meeks its hard to know where to start. Just like his buddy, Wright. BO 's close associations with so many of these people is scary, coupled with his past remarks, including one from yesterday about teaching morality and punishing with babies!
The number of groups he hates just grows. And progressive people want this guy for president? I'm so baffled! The only thing he can hang his hat on is his specious argument about being anti- war! Can we even believe him about that anymore?

Obama , that so called, great uniter , is one of the most divisive figures in our political system! Who, exactly does he represent?
He seems to have issues with everyone!
Gays do not trust him!
Jews do not trust him!
Women shouldn't trust him!
Men who earn less than 100,000.00 a year shouldn't trust him.
The Military shouldn't trust him.
So, are there that many sexist and biased people out there who are
supporting this guy?

it's sad when people forget the wisdom passed down. "You shall be known by the friends you keep"..."Birds of a feather, flock together".
Not guilty by association? Please...

Let's add to this list:
-Asian Americans don't trust him because he was dishonest on the 80/20 questionnaire
-Indian Americans don't trust him because of his campaign calling Hillary D-Punjab, India simply because the community strongly supports her.
-Italian Americans don't trust him because his pastor apparently is racist against them as well.

I sit day after day and wonder how in the world this man Obama can still be in the race. I am so blown away at his support that it is truly scary indeed:( All I can do is shake my head with disbelief.

You know you are right. And I think it is time to call their bluff. They keep threatening violence and rioting if Obama doesn't get the nomination. That is precisely the main reason there is no way he should get it.
We cannot bow down to this race card. Our country will go to ruin if we allow fear to control our decisions.
They keep threatening us with black riots if Obama loses. Fear is no way to run a country. It is time America stands up against this.

Perez says: He continues to disappoint us!
Just when you thought reports of Barack Obama and his controversial minister Rev. Jeremiah Wright were over, a new individual appears.
Now news of Obama's relationship with homophobe Rev. James T. Meeks has been revealed, and it's very upsetting.
Rev. Meeks is an Illinois state senator and serves as the pastor of the 22,000 member Salem Baptist Church in Chicago, where Obama frequently campaigned back in 2003 when running for Senate.
Rev. Meeks has been described as someone in which Obama seeks spiritual counsel from, according to an article printer in the Chicago Sun Times. He will even serve as an Obama delegate at the 2008 Democratic convention in Denver.
Rev. Meeks has served on Obama’s exploratory committee for the presidency and was even listed on Obama's campaign website as one his ‘influential black supporters’. The Chicago Sun Times also reported that both Rev. Meeks and Obama share a history of receiving substantial campaign contributions from the indicted real estate "criminal" Tony Rezko.
Aside from numerous other reports linking the two together, the real issue is the character of Rev. Meeks, who is known for his racially charged remarks and homophobic ways.
In a 2006 sermon, Rev. Meeks stated, "We don't have slave masters. We got mayors. But they still the same white people who are presiding over systems where black people are not able, or to be educated. You got some preachers that are house niggers. You got some elected officials that are house niggers. And rather than them trying to break this up, they gonna fight you to protect this white man." He later defended that sermon during an interview with a Chicago CBS 2 reporter.
Not to mention Rev. Meeks homophobic ways are well noted. A 2007 newsletter from the Southern Poverty Law Center named Rev. Meeks one of the "10 leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement."
The newsletter cites him as a key member of Chicago's ‘Gatekeepers’ network (an interracial group of evangelical ministers who strive to erase the division between church and state) and “a stalwart anti-gay activist… [who]… has used his House of Hope mega-church to launch petition drives for the Illinois Family Institute (IFI), a major state-level ‘family values’ pressure group that lauded him last year for leading African Americans in ‘clearly understanding the threat of gay marriage.'”
You can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep!
Sad. Sad. Sad

I feel exactly the same way!
I'll bet that when Obama, Wright, Oprah, and their other buddies get together, they laugh their asses off at how thoroughly this sociopath was able to bamboozle Kennedy, Kerry, and all the other kool-ade drinkers, including the media, the ultra-liberal, oh so hip and intellectual elites and their trust fund kids.

This is more than disgusting. It's frightening...truly scary. It's going to send many of us right back into the closet. Glad I live in a fairly progressive area. Although that's changing a bit, too.:(

It is obvious to me and many others that Obama is using hate to push back against hate. He will use the hate against blacks to his advantage and the hate of gays and Israel and the Jews as well to fuel that push!
If Obama has a chance, he will raise hate to new levels and call it justified. Be afraid people.....be very afraid.

What really disturbs me is that GLBTQ members actually support Obama. All it takes is some digging to see that Clinton is a much more sound choice in regards to GLBTQ.

Totally agree. This threat of race riots or any kind of riots is insulting. It's scare tactics, not unlike the crap the Bush administration has always used to control try and control us. Red alerts? Gimme a break. If you can't persuade them with the truth then make things up to frighten them into herd behavior.
I'm totally sick of it. Eight years of scare tactics is enough already!!!

Wyoming...the words progressive and liberal are not in the dictionary here. While I cannot clearly avow that the state has a racist bent ( only because less than 1% of all it's citizens are African American, so most Wyoming-ites have no contact with them so I have nothing to judge by...) I can tell you with an absolute certainty that there is a HUGE amount of anti-gay feeling here, There were actually "protests" about Brokeback Mountain and many theaters refused to show it.
Four months after a gay University of Wyoming student was beaten to death, a state legislative committee Wednesday killed two bills that would have imposed heavier penalties for crimes motivated by prejudice.
Wyoming is one of only nine states without bias crime legislation
There are no "Openly" gay people here (I can not attest to Cheyenne or Casper, the two largest cities in the state.)
My point being that the kind of rhetoric that Meeks promotes is a vial, nasty, self aggrandizing & loathsome & pustulant lesion on the skin of humanity. I know how I feel about Wyoming and it's horrible discrimination and that is how EVERYONE should feel, EXCEPT BARACK OBAMA. He can remain friends with the poorest excuses for human beings and yet, manage to keep his
psyche untainted and pure. His "Holy" & "Annointed" aura protects him from the worst kind of malicious hate mongers and even allows him to see their "good" qualities while defending the bad. I grow more ashamed of my country every day. Hoodwinked, Bamboozled and deluded...It is hard for me to believe that this despicable human being that is Obama could be the next president of what once was, the finest country in the world. Shame on you America. Shame on you The Mainstream Media that are supposed to be the tellers of truth. Shame on you that have sold your souls to a charlatan and a conjurer of cheap tricks.

Hey Murray, and anyone else that may have examples... I've been talking to my lgbt friends about Obama and his shady associations re: lgbt issues etc., and the Obamabots shoot back that Clinton has similar associations with anti-gay folks/leaders and that it's just part of politics, as if to shrug and excuse Obama for his associations. I've been looking, but can't seem to find these "overt associations" nor do the Obamabots have any examples. I think there's huge difference between having to work with these characters vs choosing to support/associate with and or knighting an individual as one's spiritual adviser!
I know the Clinton's haven't been the best advocates in the world for glbt issues, but, as I have to continually remind my Obamabot friends (or sympathizers) is that Bill is the first president to even touch the issues in our favor. DADT didn't work like they envisioned it originally (but I believe the military totally misused this and twisted away from it's original purpose), and the DOMA... well, I'm not sure why he had to play that political game... (these being the only two concrete things they throw at me... and I have to say to them "I'm talking about Hillary, not Bill... leave Bill out of it." And they still don't have any other examples of anything Hillary has ever done that purposefully, or by association, has hurt our community)... I truly believe that Hillary has our best interest at heart and will do what she can to negotiate and bring us closer to even ground than we've ever been before. I fear the exact opposite of Obama.
