View Full Version : Misuse of PM System - Again.
It has been brought to my attention (yet again unfortunately) that the PM system was being used today to recruit people for another forum on the Internet. This has been done in the past and it's sad that there will always be people who feel the need to take advantage of the work of others in order to further their own agenda. As far as I am aware it only involved one person and their account has been disabled.
The Internet is a big place with room for all. People have free will to check out whatever political websites they like. But - to the person/s in question - please do not use the PM system of this forum to, in essense, poach members for another forum.
Thank you.

You can choose to be active in more then one Forum. There is no exclusivity contract with HCF. Feel free to do what you want with your PM's and your internet activity. Read it, delete it, save it, who cares it is your PRIVATE MESSAGE (isn't it?) to do with what you like.
CGP is absolutely right, PM's should not be used for spamming and harassment. Did the PM's fall into those categories? If not, what's the big deal?

Correct. The Internet is a big place! And how boring it would be to not explore it.

Well the one I received did. And from a person I've never even spoken too. Go figure.:p
Once again it's been brought to my attention that a forum member (non-active) has been using the private messaging system to advertize and recruit members for another forum. This is a misuse of the PM system. If anyone wishes to advertize another website you are welcome to do so publically by starting a new thread in the main room and discussing/promoting the website - go right ahead! But please DO NOT use the PM system to spam other members and to lure them away from this forum. Such behavior is unethical and disrespectful and will lead to account suspension.
Thank You.

Mod Note: Here'a copy of CGP's post #30 from 10-14-09. The same policy applies today. If you wish to advertise another forum, please do so by publicly advertising it in the Main Room. Do not use the PM system!

Not surprisingly, the "new forum" is using a name that was previously considered as a possibility for the CGP forum.
Some originality at least would help.

A history of some participants in this forum taking ideas generated from within this forum and presenting them as their own...
But honestly, it doesn't really matter and I don't have much feeling about the issue. The Internet is a big place and there is plenty of room for a trillion forums as we have discussed in these kinds of threads before.

As a member, it would not be a problem for US, it is however MUCHO disrespectful to Murray and it pisses me off that people continue to do this to him.
And you didn't take an idea that was generated within this forum and present it as your own?
Please show me where I have started another website using a name that someone else from this forum created?
Your veiled criticisms are quite irritating. Yes, I know I'm a hypocrite - does that make you feel better?

When you recruit secretively like that it's called poaching. CGP has repeatedly made it clear he doesn't want that kind of approach here and he's asked people to openly announce their forums in the Main Room. That seems fair enough to me--and much more generous than the policies of many other online sites.

I'm confused. (yes, I know I am being redundant, but on that issue I am sure I can find some common ground.) Passing on a site to a few people that you think might be interested seems reasonable. It is not like you are asking them to leave this one. It seems like announcing it through a thread would be more like poaching. Recruiting from here by people that have essentially left, or their surrogates, would be extremely unethical no matter how it was done.

How do you know the intent of those who use this PM system isn't to induce members to leave this forum? I'm the owner of a Yahoo group and a moderator on another where harvesting email addresses for the purpose of recruiting members for rival groups is considered unethical and against policy. PMing to recruit is the same concept.
And it's really a moot point. The policy here is to announce new forums in the Main Room, which reaches the entire membership. If it's going to be done, that's the way it should be done, imo.

I agree. Those that were passing other forums along in good conscious should not have a problem doing it as a thread, although I can see why they might not want to.
