Florida Dems meeting with Dean

(CNN) — Florida’s Democratic leadership is meeting with national party chairman Howard Dean today in a bid to resolve their dispute over the seating of that state’s delegation at the presidential nominating convention in Denver.

The session, held Democratic National Committee headquarters, includes Dean, congressional Democrats like Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who backs Hillary Clinton, Rep. Robert Wexler, who supports Barack Obama, Sen. Bill Nelson and state party chair Karen Thurman.

The national party stripped Florida of its delegates last year, along with Michigan, when both states scheduled their primaries in January, in violation of DNC instructions. None of the major candidates campaigned there ahead of those votes.

The major presidential candidates all agreed not to campaign in the state in advance of the January 29 contest. More than 1.75 million voters – a state record – weighed in, and Hillary Clinton won a majority of the vote, but no delegates were awarded.

Florida’s Democrats had been weighing several options for a re-vote, including a possible mail-in primary, ahead of the DNC’s June 10 deadline – but two weeks ago, the state party announced that it would not hold a second primary, regardless of whether the cost was covered by outside contributors.

At the time, Wasserman Schultz, who had been staunchly opposed to a re-vote, told CNN then that “now it’s time for all the people involved in ensuring Florida’s delegation is seated to come together and make sure that happens.”

She also expressed a willingness to consider a proposal that would allow the full delegation to weigh in at the convention, but for each delegate to get just half a vote.

Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, a supporter of Sen. Barack Obama, rejected that proposal, which seemed to gain traction as prospects for a new contest grew more remote.

He told CNN’s Gloria Borger that the Illinois senator would like to “give Florida the opportunity to vote” – but not in a way that would change the overall outcome.

The Clinton campaign – which won in both Florida and Michigan, which faced the same penalty – has pushed for both states’ delegations to be seated, with spokesmen accusing the Obama team of looking to “disenfranchise” voters.

i am so angry. rules be damned. florida held a fair election. count us! those who now say "we didn't vote because we knew it wouldn't count", is rediculous! we had a very high turnout. we voted because we knew, sometime later, this would happen. and at the very least, we voted to show support to our candidate. this is wrong.

we do not need a do-over. our primary was done and done fairly. everyone had the choice to go vote or stay home.

the democratic party is a disgrace.

What does that mean, but not in a way that would change the overall outcome? If they don't have a problem with the outcome then seat the Delegates NOW!! I dont get that part.

nothing that man says ever makes sense. who is he, to "give florida the opportunity to vote", since we already voted. he lost. we do not need his patronizing permission to do what was already done, fairly. count our votes!

New England Patriots: We'd like to give the Giants a chance to play the last 5 minutes but not in a way that would change the overall outcome.

Judge: We'll let you appeal your conviction but not in a way that would change the guilty verdict.

Clerk: I'll give you an opportunity to retake this drivers license exam but not in a way that would change the fact that you failed.

They just mean invite the delegates from Florida and Michigan to the Democratic party. They don't mean they will count the votes - so the voters are still disinfranchised.

And dont they know that Obama had commercials running in Florida and Hillary did not. Also according to some Floridian Obama had large cardboard cutouts at the polling booths...That sounds to me that he expected his vote to count at that time.

Perhaps people should contact Hillary's rep at the DNC and give her that information - ALL THE PEOPLE FROM FLORIDA ON THIS SITE, I mean because they were there and saw the ads running on TV. Also to send that info to all the delegates and super delegates and of course Dean and the rest of the group.

I do believe the Democratic party is finished. It will be divided into two parties. The elete university professorial wine drinkers who only care about themselves and looking young and hip and think they will live forever so don't need real universal health care. And the other the working men and women who need a good representative for them in Washington who also believe in a Woman's right to choose and right to religious freedom and help with their healthcare that really works for them. TWO DIFFERENT PARTIES IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

Oh and include Senior Citizens in that second party - especially in Florida where they believe in Hillary and health care e tc.

Exactly, he's saying that Florida and Michigan can be counted as long as they don't decide the race, because they clearly have the potential to. Holding a new primary in these states will benefit Hillary and are likely to give her an edge in the popular vote, he won't let that happen. Howard Dean is making sure the delegates and popular vote will be trivial to both candidates before they're seated, pretty much guaranteeing Obama remains ahead in pop vote and delegates.

the man has to go. the more i hear, the angrier i get. he doesn't want florida to count because he lost? because even though we voted, the votes have been counted, the delegates have been selected, hillary won big, it is to be hidden and pretend like it never happened? and the dnc and superdelegates are going to allow this?

i knew it was unlikely the convention would officially count us, but i did believe that the fact that we voted and hillary won would count in their decision-making. to pretned we don't even exist is insane!

florida spoke! discount us barry. sure. wait until november and watch us then. watch this large swing state swing the hammer on you and push mccain right into the whitehouse! poor michelle can cry "racism" and your preacher can rant fire down on the masses. i am pissed and i refuse to be told i don't exist.

Obama can't have it both ways. He doesn't want our votes in the Primary to count now, but he would love to get our votes in November and have them count then. Well, Mr. O, don't count on it! You can't have your cake and eat it, too!

sounds like we are harkening back to the days of mafia voting booths

Knowing it was history and seeing it in action are two different things. No Thanks Ted KKKennedy can take his bootlegging politicking back and stick it up his kakopygian and don't forget Obama while you are at it.

BO and Dean can both kiss my TYPICAL WHITE GIRLY ASS as this girl will be voting for McCain, Campaigning for McCain and donating to McCain if Hillary will not be the nominee and my vote does not count. I have had just enough of the arrogant jerks who think they are above the law!

So here's the thing. Is there anyone here from FL? Call these idiots in your state's democratic party and ask them what the hell they were thinking and if they want to lose your vote in the next election. At some point the state parties in both MI and FL have to be held accountable for this fiasco. If they had only just waited a few days and played by the rules. Yes, I know we don't like the rules but apparently this is what happens when you break the rules in the "Democratic" Party.

Not only I have sent them emails, I turned down few invitations to attend fundraising events by them with a note always attached.
It seems you are misinformed like the majority of people in other states. It was not the Florida Democratic Party who decided to change the primary date. It was decided by Republican Legislators. Both Republican and Democratic primaries were moved to January 29th. Except the Republican party bosses took half of Florida delegates away and counted all the votes toward popular votes but Mr. Dean decided he will not count our votes or seat any of our delegates which is AGAINST DNC PENALIZATION BYLAWS! The maximum penalty allowed is 50% of our delegates the same as it is with the Republican. Dean did not want to count Florida and Michigan because he knew it would be over for OBAMA. If he counted our votes at the time Hillary was going to the Super Tuesday with a huge lead and the rest would be history. This injustice to Florida and Michigan voters was brought up by DNC Clinton Haters just to stop her and they do not care about the General Election outcome or think WE ARE THAT STUPID TO VOTE FOR A LYING ARROGANT B***** after they had literally stepped on us and spit to our faces. I DON'T THINK SO!
Mark my word! FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN WILL DECIDE THE GENERAL ELECTION!
