MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Vermont has become the fourth state to legalize gay marriage.

The state legislature voted Tuesday to override Gov. Jim Douglas' veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry. The vote was 23-5 to override in the state Senate and 100-49 to override in the House. Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote for override.

The vote came nine years after Vermont adopted its first-in-the-nation civil unions law.

It's now the fourth state to permit same-sex marriage. Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa are the others.

Oh wow guys! This is HUGE!

This is the first time in history a state legislature has legalized gay marriage! Up until now it's only been the courts that have legalized it. This is big.

Isn't there some law that says if you are live with a person romantically for 7 years, you are considered married (mostly for divorce proceedings). Don't know the details of this. Might be a state thing to but ...

I suggest all serious gay couples that would marry if they could should use TurboTax and just file as married filing jointly. Has to be TurboTax for obvious reasons though. I would like to see the govt. take that one to the Supreme Court. Does the IRS tax explicitly refuse gay marriage (who knows, it is like 60,000+ pages)

That was what was known as a common law marriage, and most states have done away with it. I know that Oregon did about 10 yrs ago.

Excellent. Personal Freedom wins over the parties trying to take it away.

Add Iowa to this, and it looks even better. Especially when you consider the judge who wrote the opinion in Iowa is considered a conservative.

And here's a conservative blogger who gets it, it seems.

I have been anxious to get home from work to find out what happened in the over-ride vote and I greeted my computer with a huge "woohoo"!!!

I was walking home feeling the gloom of the vote not being successful.

But for once, justice prevails.

I almost wrecked my car when I heard this on the news on the way home....I was whooping it up loud and clear.

Regarding common law marriages, that varies from state to state. Many think of the "7 year", but that may not be accurate for your state. Here, when a couple represents themselves as a couple (ie: dual homeownership, dual bank accounts) they are considered common law.

Indeed it is, and I love the way this went down. The people spoke, the legislatures acted as responsible public servants, and they pushed back against the executive. This is how democracy should work!

That is an easy one. I can't name a single member here that is against gay marriage. The biggest fights here on this subject would be who is more pro than the other.

that's because if anyone here came out against gay marriage Murray would ban them. It's the one issue he has no tolerance for the other side.

Yup. I've always figured if I wanted to commit HCF suicide, I could just badmouth the LGBT (right?) movement. If I was anti-gay, I would already be banned because I wouldn't be silent about it.

I spent some of my youth in Hollywood and I walked just about everywhere. I'd get hit on while buying condoms at the local Pharmacy. Very common to be walking to a music gig with a visiting friend when they'd say "check out that chick." and I'd tell them "that's a dude". If I put on jeans and a white T-shirt, I suddenly turned drive by cars into potential paychecks. I was challenged with "how do you know you don't like it until you've tried it."

So if my response to my friend on the pick up line "your legs are so sexy" isn't a cocked fist but me telling my friend "I told you my legs are better than yours" then I've passed all the stereotype tests. Meeting the average gay person now is actually pretty boring now. I'm more upset that haven't been asked out yet. Thanks for giving me a complex that I am no longer desirable guys. I might be straight (instead of married), but I'm not dead.

Correct. My tolerance for accepting different points of views doesn't extend to allowing anti-gay sentiments to be expressed in this forum. There have been a couple of people over time who pushed the boundary and were promptly shown the door. I know there are probably others (who post in the forum) who oppose gay marriage but I think they know to keep quiet about that in here. And that's a wise move!
