View Full Version : (Apr 11, 2009): "Style deconstructed: why Hillary Clinton's trouser suits don't work" (Times Online)

Oh, what a tangled web we weave when too many dumb focus groups we do believe. Poor Hillary Clinton. In her long march to the White House, she made the greatest sacrifice of all, forsaking her beloved Donna Karan lest the electorate thought her too extravagant. Out went the relaxed tailoring that had given the Former First Lady an air of effortless elegance. In came trousers suits in jarring colours and puzzling proportions, reminiscent of those run up in two hours in a Hong Kong market. This seems wrong. Even more unfair: Americans voted in their droves for a man whose wife comports herself in the cream of American designers. That includes Oscar de la Renta. Who is even pricier than Donna Karan.

The author should have realized that Hillary is a friend of Oscar de la Renta and wears dresses designed by him on occasion.
And what are those "puzzling proportions" supposed to mean? I have never seen anything as perfectly fitting as Hillary's pantsuits.
Besides, the headline promises an insight "why Hillary Clinton's trouser suits don't work" yet this short piece of bad writing doesn't come up with any proof of that.
But if you take a look at the other crap that woman has written in her column, this anti-Hillary piece comes as no surprise:
- What will Michelle Obama wear to the inauguration?
- How to clear a hurdle in a frothy ball gown
- Michelle Obama's toned arms spark a trend
- Michelle Obama's favourite designer: Jason Wu
There seems to be a Michelle Obama worship piece every week. Oh, and there is one called "How to dress to please men"...

I am no fashion expert and this the first and last time I comment on fashion. In whatever Secretary Clinton wears, she looks a thousand times more elegant and presentable than Michelle Obama. She is a classy lady and certainly does not need two-bit writers to give her condescending advice.
I'll take Hillary's "look" any day over Michelle Obama's. It seems that the latest media craze is to convince us that Michelle is a fashion expert. That has about as much credibility as Barack's bow to the king was not a bow. Seeing is believing in both cases.X_X

I think people don't want to think of their president as elegant, so I'm betting her wearing a dress would have been a good move for the fashion magaines, but a bad move for male voters ... and it would have been an subconscious prejudice.
But then again, some people found the pantsuit sexy:

But I guess Hillary could have still come off as a superhero while still wearing *pants* with something like this:

Better?

I never get these clothes discussions. It makes me wonder if I'm reading a news article or a hollywood gossip article.

More hard-hitting journalism from America's Fourth Estate. I am so sick of this kind of useless drivel.
and yes, Hillary has looked stunning as our SOS.
