Amid the brouhaha surrounding Susan Boyle's unlikely triumph on Britain's Got Talent, one thing has stood out.
Not Boyle's voice, beautiful though it is, but rather the way in which her success has hammered home the absence of women of a certain age from our television screens, our magazine pages, our films and our advertisements.
In a recent column for her website The Daily Beast, Tina Brown dubbed them 'the invisible women', these ordinary ladies who don't starve themselves down to size zero or bother with Botox.
More:
They are, as Brown points out in her piece, what Hillary Clinton called the 'sisterhood of the travelling pantsuit', the 'unbeautiful 47-year-olds who never get a chance to make their point in meetings' and who turned out in their thousands in America to throw their support behind the former First Lady's presidential campaign.
More:
Flick through any magazine and you will find yourself inundated with plugs for the latest miracle cream to hide those, apparently unsightly, wrinkles, fashion spreads which showcase clothes only the most slender among us could pull off and countless interviews with bright young things telling us in detail about how they see the world after 20 years of living on this planet.
And no one seems immune from our society's obsession with this. When Hillary Clinton ran for President last year, many pundits argued that she would get nowhere if she didn't agree to a makeover. One stylist claimed that Hillary was 'too masculine' and argued that 'if we're modern enough to consider a woman for President' we should also expect her to 'dress like a chic, gorgeous woman'. :surprise:
Media executive Bonnie Fuller said: 'While I don't think anyone wants Hillary to morph into a full-time fashionista, she can take what celebrities, stylists and even women's magazine editors have come to realise - a style makeover can have a magical effect.' Hillary Clinton remained confident enough to ignore all such advice and stick to her formula of brightly coloured trouser suits and minimal make-up. But no doubt there are still those in the fashion industry who are shaking their heads and saying: 'If she'd just listened to us about that makeover. . .'
More:
So how much more overwhelming must it be to be thrust into that spotlight and subjected to the most blatant 'we love everything about you, now change' makeover since the Republican party picked Sarah Palin for vice president, announced that she was a breath of fresh air and promptly spent a fortune on kitting her out with a new, more upmarket wardrobe?
This is a really interesting article about the politics of "ageism" in the 21st century. Why are male politicians (and men in general) not held to the same "beauty" standard that women are as they grow older?

Yes, very interesting and sad at the same time in regards to the double standards that persist...

I don't like the assumption that all Clinton supporters were 'unbeautiful 47 year olds. I can point out several on this forum that prove it....yes I get that the exception doesn't disprove the general rule but at the same time I don't like getting this label as someone in their 30s. Generalizations are never good....so I don't like this part of the article.

It's no doubt that women are held to a higher beauty standard than men...however men are not exempt. Think Joe Biden and John Edwards, just looking I suspect (of course I don't know) work has been done on both. Many male actors also get work done (my husband's 'barber' told him about a male celeb that wears a toupe and I would have NEVER guessed, so males do care). I do realize women are disproportionately expected to be "beautiful" but men are not totally exempt.
In addition, the tendency of humans (and I do mean men and women) to be visual is not something I think can be changed. I think it's part of the human makeup. I'm not at all saying all women should be beautiful but I do think one should make the most of what they have. For me personally while I'll likely not get plastic surgery I have and will get laser surgery on the skin, it's inexpensive and if it helps and make someone feel better about themselves why not. I also enjoy fashion and buying the latest ones and I enjoy getting my hair done. I just like to do it. The truth is impressions do matter - for men and women. Think about an overweight bald man speaking vs. a skinny man with a full head of hair...whom do we take more seriously?
So do I think Hillary should have gotten the makeover (not necessarily fashion I like the suits but otherwise)? Yes. Not because she needs it or because I dislike how she looks. Instead only because first impressions do matter (for men and women) and I think she should have used every tool in the box to win.

I get the point that wrinkles are not necessarily ugly but for those of us who might want to hide them I'm glad these products are available.
I agree 20 year olds have way too much say with their "opinions" in fashion magazines, I mean please (I'd rather hear opinions from all ages)! But at the same time I don't see any problem with a woman (or man) wanting to look their best at any age.
(and I guarantee I'm not going to be popular after posting this!)

LOL I for one am not a 47 year old! NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Can I say I kinda agree with that. X_X Don't get me wrong I love Hill as much as some other people here but I've seen her dress so much more like her than just the pantsuit!

LMAO I know! Apparently we have both aged significantly according to the author of this article! It's like newsflash: Hill had younger female and male supporters also!

It's sad... I'm 18 and I've already hit middle age crisis level! WTF!

It is so unfair to assume it is all about looks. I'm glad I noticed this thread after being so caught up in the blue pant suit Lebanon thread. She looked "wonderful".

LOL, I said some if it (not all) definitely is about looks..and I stand by that. Humans are visual creatures. ;) And personally I see nothing wrong with making the most of what one's got...living in lala land you know as well as I do how much appearance factors in, in particular when one is in the public light.....I just don't think that will ever change. I think the key is balance...it's not all about one thing or the other.

Does CGP have to reopen the bullying thread to prove it isn't about looks .... oh wait, it is.
If a fashion "makeover" would have helped her win, I would not have had a problem with it!

Besides the unicolor Pantsuit, was there really a problem with Hillary's look?

A stylist could have done a few things.....you just never know...makeup choice can do wonders for the facial appearance in quite a few ways as can a quick laser. I think a stylist is always a good idea. And I often wondered if they were using the right filter on her during the debates.
And maybe the pantsuits could have been tweaked a bit to still be pantsuits but perhaps with a flattering cut/change somewhere.
(Again I'm not saying I didn't like her looks, I'm just saying a stylist never hurts anything...why not?)

During the CNN debate they did... she looked flawless. That's when everyone was like, "OMG!! She got botox!"

No, just a problem with the Hollywood/MTV driven voters.

Some people can never be pleased. LOL.
In the other debates did they do the filters only on O or did they leave it off both?
Speaking of looks remember everyone going on and on about how Obama looked "older" and "tired" near the end? And then there was Nixon sweating during that debate back before my time and the turnoff of that on the people. But yes, it's all about women and the MTV/Hollywood crowd.

For the few that may not have seen the video..this is Susan Boyle...the comments are intriguing as they come from all over the world in many different languages...Ms. Boyle represents the triumph of the human spirit over the superficial...and as the one judge said, "The biggest wake-up call ever."

WOW! I go away for 6 days and come back to BREASTICLES!!! OMG! THE HORROR!!
I like Susan, and Hillary in whatever they choose to wear. Or however they style their hair. Its about the inside.
That said, if ya got IT, FLAUNT IT! Or BUY IT! Whatever IT takes to make YOU feel good. I am all for plastic surgery, makeovers, whatever it takes to make someone feel good about themselves. If God didn't bless you with it, by all means, seek it out any way possible, if that makes you happy.
