View Full Version : (May 10, 2009) Late Show writer: Comedy shows don't make fun of Obama because he is "a little too damn competent". (NewsBusters)

Later, to a chorus of “yeah” from other writers on the stage representing The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Late Night, as well as another Late Show writer (Tom Ruprecht, who is in front of Scheft in the screen shot, the best I could get), Scheft insisted the only reason the comedy shows don't make fun of President Barack Obama is because he's “a little too damn competent and we ain't used to that.”

When you go through 8 years of Bush anyone would have seemed competent. But I do feel, though there has been mistakes, and that's to be expected, Obama handles them maturely and with much thought. I don't think competency has been this administrations problem. It's mostly just been a bunch of meaningless gaffes.

They don't make fun of him for fear of being labeled as "racist"...just like they did to Hillary in the primary. They learned alot from that.

It is possible to make fun of Barack Obama, or any other black person or even black people in general, without being labeled a racist. You just gotta be smart about it.
Also, it helps if it's funny.

Possibly that's the problem. The comedy writers aren't very smart. What they seem to excel at is taking cheap shots.
But I agree with VH, they're afraid of being labeled racists.

I really really doubt that the writers at The Daily Show or The Colbert Report are frightened of being labeled racists.
The Daily Show has had segments called "Racist Like Me" and "Rob Riggle Gets Racist In China" and makes fun of the lack of minorities on their show by designating a Senior Black Correspondent, as well as other things. And anyone watching either show who doesn't think that those writers are very intelligent, well I just don't know what to tell you.
Neither show is scared of talking about race or criticizing Obama and being called racists. They don't go after him viciously because they seem to like the guy, but they aren't afraid to make fun of him.

Well, there are at least two different definitions of competent, I guess.

I agree with you that Stewart and Colbert are smart. I wouldn't put them in the category of comedians who don't make fun of Obama. They do, and sometimes cleverly, although not with the same fangs that they go after other politicians.
I was thinking of Leno, Letterman, etc. With Letterman, it's political. With Leno, I don't know. He seems a bit risk-averse to me. And please, don't ever underestimate the concern with being labeled a racist--until you've been there. It was used as a weapon repeatedly by Team Obama during the elections and is still being used by his supporters. All of us here at HCF were called racists daily--probably hourly--along with every other vile and sexist insult they could throw at us.

And labeling people as sexist was the weapon repeatedly used by Team Hillary. It happened on both sides. Can we seriously stop bringing it up?

No. Seriously, no. If you don't want to participate in the discussions, don't, but stop telling people not to bring up an issue that is still relevant to them. If it isn't to you, bow out.

If you have a right to bring it up I have a right to say how annoying it is when people bring it up. As if Hillary was the only person in the race who had horrible things said about her. It's a political race! Shit happens! Obama has annoying supporters. Hillary has annoying supporters. Everyone had annoying supporters. It's just how politics is. Ignorance is plentiful in the general electorate. That's why I can't stand videos attacking surrogates and supporters of candidates. Everyone has stupid supporters.
The reason comedians aren't making fun of Obama is not because they are afraid of being called a racist. Most major comedians, including the white ones, show no fear in making fun of black people. Besides there are things you could make fun of Obama that have nothing to do with race.
The reason it's tough to find comedians who make fun of Obama is simple. It's political.
Letterman? Obama supporter
Leno? Obama Supporter
O'Brien? Obama Supporter
It's not that they are purposely trying to make Obama look good. It's that they literally can't think of anything bad to say about him. There aren't too many conservative comedians who have a national audience. The comedy market is flooded with democrats and democrat supporters.
Comedians don't let accusations of racism slow them down. They just mock those people and add them to their routine.

I'm so sick of this pc crap! "It is possible"? Meaning, yeah you will get labeled for saying anything against anyone based on their skin color, but if you try to
curb directly slamming him or calling him out, it may fly.
What a pathetic commentary on our times and even more shame to those that condone and us this to try and shut people up.

In a nutshell: It's not racist if it's funny.
However, if you want to be racist, join the <CENSORED> Klan or some other white supremacist group. Then you can say all the racist <CENSORED> you want and no one will criticize you for it. In fact, they'll praise you. You'll be a hero. And you may even get a free haircut!

I don't buy that for a second. They're supposed to thinking of funny things to say about him and even I can do that. In the long run, it will only hurt them to wimp out where Obama's concerned. What are they going to do for material? Bush is gone. Hillary seems to be off their radar. They still manage to make a punching bag out of Palin and her family on occasion, but they can hardly stay relevant if they're afraid or unable to poke fun at the POTUS.

Yes, Obama is just so in control.
How about this joke:
Today after only 2 months since releasing his budget, I guess Obama admitted an accounting error of $90 billion. That is 52% of the ENTIRE deficit of Bush in 2007. In a mere decade, what used to be the entire deficit for the year is now just an accounting error.

The comedians won't make fun of Obama because they like him. Most of them, if you asked them for the actual specifics of what the Bush Administration did that was "incompetent" as opposed to what the Obama Administration has done that is "competent," they would be clueless.
It will be a long time before anyone could call his administration or him "competent" or "incompetent." And it is wrong to call the Bush Administration incompetent, as it was very competent in terms of keeping the country safe which is a big accomplishment, along with a few other things and it essentially tried a more scaled-down version to fix the economy of what the Obama administration is attempting (stimulus, bailout, etc...).
In fact, to anyone who was paying attention, it was Obama who would be "four more years of George Bush" from a fiscal standpoint, not John McCain. The Bush Administration and Republicans spent far too much money, and McCain wanted to work to bring spending under control, whereas Obama is the one who had been intending all along to spend even more. He "says" he will bring spending under control, but his policies show the exact opposite.
Most comedians are super Leftist with the intellectual firepower of a carrot. Remember, you have people in the entertainment profession who on the one hand claim George W. Bush was a dummy, but who then turn around and claim he knocked down the Twin Towers, which would mean he was really a diabolic genius.

Republicans are by definition dummies. G. W. Bush was a dummy and yet he had a higher IQ than Kerry and higher grades in college than Al Gore.
I left the Republican Party and immediately picked up 20 IQ points.
