Nevada's Republican governor has turned down an invitation from the White House to briefly greet President Obama when he visits the state tomorrow for a Democratic fundraising event, citing comments the president made earlier this year calling on companies that received taxpayer-funded bailouts to avoid wasting money on luxuries like company planes and Vegas vacations.

“While I appreciate the offer, I am not interested in a handshake and a hello from President Obama, I am interested in an apology and plan to undo the damage the President did,” Gov. Jim Gibbons said in a Monday statement.

He again called on Obama to publicly promote Nevada tourism, and to apologize for his remark that business leaders receiving money from the government "can’t get corporate jets. You can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime,” blaming the president for the recent cancellation of hundreds of conventions and other meetings originally scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, and the loss of more than $100 million in revenue.

"President Obama is coming to Las Vegas to take millions of dollars in campaign cash for Senator Harry Reid, while the President’s own words have hurt working families in Nevada and damaged the economy in Nevada for businesses large and small,” he said. “Both men should be ashamed, because people are suffering through the depths of the recession while they practice the height of hypocrisy."

latest statement. Last week, Gibbons said the president had turned down a request for a sit-down meeting.

Pretty sure he's calling it as he sees it in the previous responses, in that special Spang way. :)

Who's picking up the tab for Obama's travel costs? If it's the taxpayers, then it's totally hypocritical for him to harp on businesses that convene in Vegas.

So the president is supposed to stay in Washington throughout his term?

I really, really like my Governor. And he also keeps vetoing the tax increases the Nevada legislature send him to sign. These freaking guys just don't get it that we can't afford any MORE taxes.

OK, didn't Obama just comment that the U.S. will go broke if it doesn't do something about the skyrocketing national debt. Now given that, and the cost involved of Presidental travel, why would it be OK for him to attend a fundraiser at this time at taxpayers expense, but not OK for financially struggling companies to hold conventions or meetings in Las Vegas? This trip is not essential travel.

Financially struggling companies should not be going to Vegas.

The governor is making a point--and I think I like it. Pretty gutsy, actually.

We need more politicians willing to take strong stands and speak truth to power.

Actually, financially struggling companies should be going to Vegas. Price compare having a national group meeting or convention in NY or SF as opposed to Vegas, and Vegas looks like a bargain. It has plenty of hotel rooms and airfares to Vegas tend to be some of the lowest in the nation. Hotels generally give good rates to groups because they know that the attendees will end up spending a lot of money at their own venues. Who really hangs around their hotel in their "down time" while in NY or SF?
