The Offense: Late night TV host David Letterman "joked" that during their recent trip to New York, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter "was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez" during a Yankees baseball game. The next night Letterman said that the hardest part of Palin's trip was "keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter."

I think it's time for us Conservatives to start boycotting Letterman's sponsors. If he wants to continue his show he can get an "Evil-Right-Wing-Is-Picking-On-Me" Bailout from P-BO.

The main reason most civil rights activists of today make people groan more than they make people get up and take action is because they refuse to accept that there is a difference between a joke and actual sexism/racism. This will only serve to polarize their movement. And that's a shame.

Comedy is something worth getting defensive over. Where would comedy be if we weren't allowed to make fun of race or gender? Comedy would be extremely boring to me if the civil rights activists had their way. And the saddest part is every time one of these activist groups go against a comedian instead of a real racist or a sexist they are only succeeding in getting people to laugh at their movement. There is a reason the image people think of when they think feminist went from Riveting Rosie to nagging college chick.
Feminists and other civil rights activists would do their movement a hell of a lot of good if they just picked their battles and avoided comedians at all costs.

The problem is that a lot of comedians are really pushing a political agenda disguised at comedy. When Rush Limbaugh makes a joke about Hillary I don’t hear a lot of democrats passing it off as just a joke.

You and Sprang are splitting hairs. A joke is a joke no matter who tells it. And jokes based on political agendas are the same no matter who tells them. Jokes that are meant to hurt and demean a person are unacceptable no matter who tells them.
Why should a comedian get a pass?

Comedians say a lot of offensive stuff. A lot more offensive than anything Letterman can ever say on national television. If Rush Limbaugh wants to be a comedian, he can do what Glenn Beck does and take it on the road or have is own late night show like Letterman. Otherwise, he looks like a douchebag. Along with all the other right-wing nut-jobs that try to be funny but fail miserably.

Here's a long list of comedians who tell a joke or have told a joke called, The Aristocrats. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Aristocrats_(film)) This joke is the most offensive joke you will ever here. Letterman's joke, by comparison, is an innocent knock-knock joke told by a 1st-grader. Depending on the comedian, some versions of the joke are more offensive than others but they're all offensive, and most of them involve sex with all kinds of people, including children and inanimate objects. Here's the catch - it's a joke. It's not meant to be taken seriously or literally. Because, it's a joke. That's all it is. Just a joke. No one gets seriously injured or dies during the telling of this joke. No kids are actually molested. It's just a joke.
Comedy is an art. It's also protected by the 1st Amendment to the Constitution, along with religion.

what planet are you on spang ?. There is also a long list of comedians that have made vile , violent racist jokes, against AA , Jews Hispanics and Gays. Just because some people found them funny in the past does not mean they are acceptable today. We live in a politically correct society , everybody knows that and Letterman should have known that.

Spang, no one--at least not me--is questioning Letterman's right to tell offensive jokes. It does seem like you're questioning our right to take offense at the joke and to express that. I do think politician's kids should be off-limits because if they're not, then Obama's kids will be fair game too--and he has specifically asked that they be off limits.
If you respect Obama's request then it really isn't okay for Palin's kids to be targeted either.

Comedians have no more rights than the rest of us, they just have a bigger platform. I'll register my offense when I am offended. I'll boycott those who offend me. I'll boycott the sponsors of those who offend me. I'll continue to be more inclined to support candidates who are being attacked along sexist lines by comedians, commentators, and news media alike. I'll ignore all advice from those afflicted by unreasonable hatred for particular females, be it Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton, or whoever.
