WOODWARD, Okla. - Former President George W. Bush was greeted by thunderous applause on the Fourth of July as he told thousands of spectators in a rural Oklahoma rodeo arena that the U.S. was "the greatest nation on the face of the earth."

Bush was given six standing ovations as he spoke on a warm, humid evening in GOP-friendly Woodward, a town of about 12,000 residents in northwest Oklahoma and the latest in a handful of out-of-the-way places Bush has visited since leaving office.

During a 30-minute speech mostly devoid of political references — he mentioned his successor, Barack Obama, just once in passing — Bush thanked members of the military, spoke about the bravery of injured soldiers he'd met and told stories of people in difficult situations helping others.

"Patriotism comes in all different kinds of forms," he said. "Freedom is beautiful, freedom is precious, freedom must always be defended."

He also joked with the crowd, telling them it was "nice of you to give a retired guy something to do." The former Texas governor even briefly talked football, saying "all I ask is you take it easy on the Longhorns next year," referring to the heated rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma.

Bush surprised city
Woodward Mayor Bill Fanning estimated about 6,500 people attended Bush's speech. The former president surprised city leaders by accepting their invitation to speak at festivities celebrating the $25 million renovation of a local park.

Seats for the speech — held at a rodeo arena built in the 1930s as part of the Works Progress Administration — ranged from $25 up to $500 for the "Oval Office Ticket" in the first rows with VIP parking and complimentary beverages. Event promoter Landon Laubhan declined to say how much Bush was getting paid to speak.

After the speech, Bush waded into the crowd for a few minutes, giving hugs, signing autographs and shaking hands. "I didn't think he'd do that," Fanning said. "I told him he's welcome back any time."

Woodward is friendly territory for Bush, who visited the town two decades ago while campaigning for his father's presidential bid. Oklahoma hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964, and was the only state in the 2008 election to have every county vote for Republican candidate John McCain.

In 2004, Bush won 80.9 percent of the vote in Woodward County as he defeated Democratic challenger John Kerry.

"I came because George Bush was coming down here and I wanted to see him," said 48-year-old Douglas Stewart of nearby Freedom, who had a U.S. flag attached to his ballcap. "I helped put him in office twice. I'm proud to say I did."

‘Pretty awesome’
Stewart's 18-year-old daughter, Amber Stewart of Nephi, Utah, said that although she would have voted for Obama, a Democrat, had she been old enough last year, she thought it was "pretty awesome" that Bush would visit such a small town.

The town welcomed Bush with banners on restaurants, hotels and a highway entering Woodward. Three protesters standing outside the arena with anti-Bush signs left by mid-afternoon. No protests were seen inside the arena.

City Manager Alan Riffel said it was the first presidential visit to Woodward since the late 1950s, when Dwight Eisenhower landed at the airport outside town en route to view drought damage in the area.

For all our conservative members...Happy 4th of July. This one is for you. :D

Only in Oklahoma

If he came to Michigan he'd be chased out with pitchforks and torches.

Michigan is in better shape now?

Obama's done Michigan a lot more favors in his first 6 months than Bush did in his entire tenure in office..

Bush sounds much more relaxed. I'm sure he's glad to be out of office.

Have any of you actually met President Bush? I have, twice, and he's an incredibly nice guy.

He's a former President and anytime a former President goes anywhere, there are people there happy to see him. I am sure there would be people in Michigan would be just as excited.

Thanks for posting this, it's very nice.

Yes, like taking charge of its main industry. I don't know if I'd consider bailing someone out much of a favor.

If I met Bush, I'd probably get taken away by the Secret Service.

Michigan has been waiting for government assistance of our auto makers for a long time. If we had done it 10 years ago it wouldn't have been as costly.

Obama was the only one to actually do something about it. And most Michiganders support Obama's economic initiatives.

Obama has a 71% job approval rating in Michigan. (http://news.msu.edu/story/6425/)

That's a shame because he's a really nice person.

I'm a nice guy too but if I caused as much bad things to happen with my good intentions as Bush did I'd feel I'd have no other choice than to open a "punch me in the face for a nickle" stand for charity.

The worst would be a pie in his face. Nothing too vile.

What's the maximum punishment for throwing a pie in the face of a former president?

I have met him and I agree, he is a very nice down to earth guy.

I lived in Austin when he was governor and we both used to "run" around Town Lake.

A friend talked me into going down and watch his presidential acceptance speech that was on, off, on, and back off. It was cold and rainy, but interesting. Met some celebrities but for some reason the only one that comes to mind right now is Bo Derek.

I had dinner with the family. Seriously. My dad is a former pastor, speaker for the Cove (the Billy Graham organization), lifetime social conservative and friend of the Graham family. When Graham came to speak in Tampa in Oct. 1998, George H.W. Bush spoke before him. I was "made" to come to the crusade as a "family obligation." I was then "made" to come to dinner with the Graham's and Bush's. This was before Jeb was Gov. of FL, and while W. was still Gov. of TX. I don't remember them being nice. I remember sulking and not saying a word or listening to anyone. I was 19 years old and I just wanted it to be over so I could go clubbing in Ybor City. :o

Well that's fine. I just would choose to treat a former President with a lot more respect.

Laura, that is really cool!!

Ybor City was a blast. I saw George H.W. Bush get out of a car and enter a La Quinta Inn when he was campaigning for president in I guess it was '87? He held up traffic for a good hour and I was very late to my bowling league at Seminole Lanes.

LOL! Politicians always hold up traffic; it's annoying. Yeah, Ybor was exciting back in the day. I lost my taste for it at about age 24, though.

I only went twice and I was 18 both times. I'd like to go back but now I'd be the old guy in the club. No one wants to be the old guy in the club.

I was at a concert the other night with my friend and we were dancing like crazy. So much so that this old guy thought we rocked and bought us both drinks.

So I have no problem with old guys at clubs.

I felt that way last night when I was playing flip cup at my neighbor's. I was assured there were other almost 30 year olds playing.

I was never a huge clubber. I did go in Vegas though.
