Hi everyone! Since we our more than just our political ideology, I thought it would be interesting for us to rank our Top 5 personal traits. With 1 being highest, How would you describe yourself in order? I'll start....
1. Californian (make that Southern Californian)
2. Hispanic
3. Pragmatic Realist
4. Gay
5. Catholic
I really do believe that we are the products of our environment, and I have no doubt that I would have a different behavior if I grew up somewhere else. Being from a hispanic family has really given me a different aspect on things. I don't have an "only an American" view on things. However, being hispanic has shown me how great this country is. My grandparents came to this country with nothing, and today their grandchildren have such a better standing in life than they did. I don't think that there's another country where such generational improvement is possible in such a short amount of time. I am very much a pragmatist and realist. And that greatly influences my political ideology. I judge things by their logistics and doability, not by the ideology involved. Which is why I have little faith in the effectiveness of a big government. Yes, being gay is an important factor, but it is an inherent one. If I were Asian or Irish, or if I grew up in Texas or New York, I'd still be gay but I'd be a different person. And being catholic rounds up the bottom. Although you won't find me in the pews every Sunday, I do like to go to a church or cathedral in the "off times" and just sit there and pray. I view my catholicism as my moral compass. There are things that I will not do, not because of the legal repercussions, but because of the eternal ones.
Now it's your turn!

ClintonFan, that's where I am at now (although I go back to CA at least once or twice per month). When I got out of college in the early nineties, the jobs just weren't there in CA, so I decided to move somewhere where there were jobs (hint hint people of Michigan). I love Virginia, don't get me wrong, but I'm very much a Californian. And that's how I came up with my username. Since I'm male...native son...since I was born and raised in Southern California...NativeSun!

I can no longer use labels, it makes me crazy now. By doing this excersize it is (to me) like putting people in boxes, or categories.
Then people are going to treat you as they feel people with those labels should be treated, and I can't stand that anymore. ie: sexism, racism, classism, ageism, and homophobia, xenophobia etc.!
I feel that is one of the down falls of our nation, trying to put people in some sort of labeled drawer!
The only labels I can stand is independant person, independant voter, independant thinker!! **==:)>-

1. Independent Person
2. Independent Voter
3. Independent Thinker
:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: :confused::confused:
And I started this thread not to box us in, but to maybe help the other members better understand where we are coming from. Like I said in th OP, we are more than just our political ideology. And this is how we see ourselves, not how others see us.

I don't think for one minute that you were trying to box anyone in. My point is that others will do it for you, with there own predjudices, and preconceived notions about certain groups etc.

I love history myself. When I was a kid, I used to go to the librabry and spend a lot of time in the mid-900's section (that's a dewey decimal reference folks). I still do it, but I don't have as much free time on hand.

Well, it's O.K. if he's hot-- two for the price of one-- an A and a lay! ;) Hehe... that rhymes.
O.K. in all seriousness, NO!
I found that if I made an attempt to form a relationship with each of my professor's, no matter how big the class was, it almost always paid off.

Maybe I wasn't clear. When I refered to "forming a relationship" with a professor, it meant that I made sure I introduced myself... several times if I have to. I made appointments to discuss course material. I didn't hesitate to send e-mails and ask questions. This paid off because along the way I typically learned what they expected from a student in their class. I wanted an A and through a little extra time and effort, I would learn how to present the knowledge I obtained from the class in a way that would get me one.
I was certainly not implying that my grades were ever earned unethically, nor was I implying that I ever had an inappropriate, or even personal, relationship with a professor.
