Issa to Emanuel: Back Off!
August 4, 2009

WASHINGTON. D.C. – Following reports that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has been orchestrating an effort to intimidate members of Congress and Governors who raise legitimate concerns regarding the effectiveness of the stimulus, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Darrell Issa (R-CA) sent a letter to Emanuel saying “While this type of scare tactic may work In Chicago, it will not work to intimidate me or other Members of the United States Congress.”

“I and others have dared to bring these facts to the attention of President Obama, the Congress and the American people,” Issa wrote. “You’ve unfortunately reacted by once again resorting to the playbook of the Chicago political machine.”

Last month, Politico reported that Emanuel had “launched a coordinated effort to jam” Senator Kyl and other Administration critics… “[A]fter seeing Kyl and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) again paint the legislation as a failure on Sunday talk shows, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel directed that the letters from the Cabinet secretaries be sent to [Governor] Brewer, according to two administration officials.”

Issa noted, “The fact that the letters were coordinated by you to maximize the level of intimidation is supported by the timing, structure, and content of each letter. Not only were the four letters all sent the day following Senator Kyl’s remarks, but they were also remarkably similar in tone and sentence structure.”

Letter from Ray LaHood, Secretary of Transportation:
On Sunday, Arizona Senator Jon Kyl publicly questioned whether the stimulus is working and stated that he wants to cancel projects that aren’t presently underway. I believe the stimulus has been very effective in creating job opportunities throughout the country. However, if you prefer to forfeit the money we are making available to your state, as Senator Kyl suggests, please let me know [emphasis added].

Letter from Ken Salazar, Secretary of the Interior:
Some key Republican leaders in Congress have publicly questioned whether the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is working and suggested cancelling all projects that are not currently in progress. I believe they are wrong. The stimulus funds provided through the Recovery Act are a very effective way to create job opportunities throughout the Country. However, if you prefer to forfeit the money we are making available to Arizona, please let me know [emphasis added].

“At what point do you believe your practice of Chicago-style politics violates a public official’s right to speak out in favor of alternative policies,” Issa asks. “The American people have a right to know what role you played in developing the threatening letters to Governor Brewer and whether you intend to continue to engage in these tactics in the future.”

In order to assist the Committee with its investigation of this issue, please provide the following information by close of business on Tuesday, August 11, 2009:
Your response to Politico’s report that “White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel directed that the letters from the Cabinet secretaries be sent to [Governor] Brewer, according to two administration officials.”
A full and complete explanation of the development of the four July 13 letters from the cabinet secretaries to Governor Brewer, including but not limited to the role you or any other White House official played in writing the letters or encouraging the writing of the letters.
All records and communications between you and Secretary LaHood, Secretary Salazar, Secretary Donovan, and Secretary Vilsack referring or relating to the decision to send the July 13 letters to Governor Brewer.
A full and complete explanation of the role of the Democratic National Committee and the White House Office of Political Affairs in authoring, encouraging, facilitating, or directing the four July 13 letters from the cabinet secretaries to Governor Brewer.

Redwolf 5, I'm trying to edit your title to conform with forum guidelines, but I'll need a link to the press release, if that's what it is. The link at the bottom is to Issa's letter.

Glad to hear people are speaking up.

FYI - I know on a highway near by me ARA is at work.... They have REAL signs that our government must have spent HUNDREDS of dollars on each to ADVERTISE that it's an ARA project.... It irked me to see these high-priced signs that we've paid for! Again, it's a government agency at work with our money!

IMO, each sign could have employed a Union worker for 1 day to get REAL work done, but then it's "style over substance" in this administration!

The OBAMAFIOSO at work. Once a Chicago Politician, ALWAYS a Chicago politician. Please, just ask the citizens of Illinois and the City of Chicago...You have to come up with more than 100,000 dollars, paid to those in charge to get a "hack" (taxicab) license. Silly me...I thought if you bought a cab and bought the 40.00 license, you could drive the friggin' cab but apparently not. The "Chicago to Washington" road is paved with the cobblestones of corruption, graft, bullying
and "The Art" of "The Implied Threat"...And Emanuel learned at the feet of the Master's. OMG I am so totaly shocked!!!:rotfl:

This is not the first time the administration has used this tactic with the Governor's to try and control the representatives. Of course this being completely unethical is no big deal since they have none. The most ethical administration ever, my tush. This should be on the news not on the net or by one news organization but we know it won't.

After his ACORN report, now this, Im REALLY liking this guy.

I may be naive on this but what is bad about these letters? I am no fan of some of the projects that the stimulous funded but I found the wording to not be bullying at all. In fact, it looks like it calls out some hipocrasy. Lots of the Republicans talk well but still take the money. The argument stops at the wallet They should act and refuse the money.

I remember people complaining that you couldn't refuse the money. Now they are offering an opportunity to refuse the money and now thats bullying?

Honestly, the problem isn't obvious to me.

It's intimidation. It may be worded to be innocent but what it says is if you want state funding then fix your state reps to go along with what we want.

Just think about this as if you had a child and the principal sent you a letter that said your child was not going along with what a teacher's opinion was on a topic. The letter than goes on to state that you want to your child to be at this school and so do we, so maybe you should change his opinion to agree with the teacher or someone else's child may end up with your child's spot.

Rep. Issa is the congressman from my home district in CA and he was one of the main reasons Gray Davis was recalled. He helped to fund and organize the ballot measure that did so. Rahmbo is intimidating the wrong guy.

NativeSun, you are so lucky to have him. He has started the investigation on Acorn, and I read his argument document presented to congress. He's smart and to the point and I'll bet he is going places.

Technically, he's not my congressman since I'm registered to vote in VA, but nonetheless, he represents most of my immediate family in Congress. And he is very smart. He's a self-made millionaire from being an entrepreneur in the auto alarm industry. I believe he is the son of Lebanese immigrants. He's also Christian, so he's got a very diverse background. He's very much aware of how great this country is and the opportunities it provides. He's not a "free luncher".

Which makes me *heart* him even more! I have had a lot of contact with both groups (through employment and friendship) and find them to be great people, both culturally and intellectually. And now that things are starting to settle down in Lebanon, I very much so want to visit Beirut.
