A small aircraft and a helicopter collided in midair over the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan on Saturday, raining debris down into the waterway, the authorities said.
It was not immediately clear how many people were on board the aircraft, but a Fire Department official said it appeared that at least one person had been, “removed from the water,” and taken ashore.
“It was in the vicinity of West 14th Street,” said Paul J. Browne, a the Police Department’s chief spokesman said.
Officials said it did not initially appear that either the plane or the helicopter belonged to a government agency.
The first reports of the crash came over emergency radios shortly before noon.
Responders were rushing, by land, to the western edge of Lower Manhattan, and launching a water-based response, a Fire Department official said.
In January the Hudson River was the scene of an emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 which slid into the Hudson River on a weekday afternoon after the crew reported that the plane had struck a flock of birds shortly after leaving La Guardia Airport.
All 155 people aboard the commercial flight survived as vessels from the New York Police and Fire Departments and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey worked with New York Waterway ferries to send boats, along with the Coast Guard, to the icy waters.
