WASHINGTON (AP) — Someone spray-painted a large swastika on a sign outside the office of a U.S. congressman who was involved in a contentious argument over health care at a recent community meeting.

Democratic Rep. David Scott, who is black, said the swastika is the latest example of what he believes is an increasingly hateful and racist debate over reforming health care. The Atlanta lawmaker said he also has received mail in recent days that used racial slur references to him, and that characterized President Obama as a Marxist.

"We have got to make sure that the symbol of the swastika does not win, that the racial hatred that's bubbling up does not win this debate," Scott said in a telephone interview. "That's what is bubbling up with all of this. There's so much hatred out there for President (Barack) Obama."

Scott said staffers discovered the graffiti Tuesday morning at his Smyrna, Georgia, district office. The Nazi emblem covered a sign bearing the congressman's name.

Scott said local police were notified along with the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Capitol Police, who have warned lawmakers about potential threats stemming from the increasingly emotional debate over health care reform.

Scott, a moderate Democrat who represents a majority-white district, said he thinks the racism is isolated but can't be ignored. He said the swastika was probably intended as a warning but hopes it instead convinces reasonable people that it's time to cool down the rhetoric surrounding health care.

"We must not allow it to intimidate us," he said.

Scott's Smyrna office is located in a bank building, so he said he is optimistic that surveillance cameras captured the vandalism.

At an Aug. 1 community meeting Scott angrily yelled at protesters who peppered him with questions and complaints about Democratic health care proposals. He has said he was upset that they interrupted a meeting that was supposed to be about plans for a new highway in the area.

Well, he votes for this health care sham, his problems will be over next election. People tried to contact this man, they called and blah blah blah, everyone has heard me say this before. And yet, he is offended because they people finally caught him at a meeting they could see him and get answers? This whole thing has been presented and handled so wrong. As for racial emails?--why didn't he supply them for this report?

This man did not want to confront his constituents.

If the reps do not represent the people that voted them in, then they should expect anger, although I'm not for painting a swastika on his sign.

People are fed up.

This case doesn't seem to me to be race hate or hatred of Obama. I think he has it backwards. During Nazi Germany, the swastica was used to say, "You are a Jew and we will get you." I think in this case it was used to say, "You are a Nazi and I think you are trying to get me."

Rep. David Scott (D-GA) just appeared on CNN, discussing the swastika that was recently painted on his district office. And he also shared some very disturbing hate mail that he said he'd received lately -- before the swastika incident.

Scott showed a letter similar to one received by Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA), showing the President Obam-as-Joker picture with the message, "Death to all Marxists! Foreign and Domestic!" The letter contained a message for Scott, who is black: "To: ***** DAVID SCOTT / You were / You are / And / You shall forever be a *****!" It added, "The Ethiopian cannot make himself white."

Another letter said that Scott will go down in defeat at the next election, "and any of your colored constituents ain't gonna stop it. The folks are not going to stand for socialized medicine, even though most negroes refuse to stand on their own two feet."

"But we have to understand is," Scott said, "we can't let these kinds of racist things, or that swastika, win this debate. And that is not gonna happen."

No racism there, no siree.

No racism there, no siree.

No evidence that those e-mails are not written by the left to stir up trouble, is there?
