View Full Version : "Comparing Canadian and American Health Care" (Video, KPBS)
For the first time ever, KPBS teams up with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to compare American privatized medicine with government funded, universal health care in Canada. In the end, which system would make us healthier? In which country would we live longer? And is basic health care a right or a privilege?

Again I request, unless you have watched the entire 26 minute video, please don't comment on this video.
This is an excellent presentation and I highly recommend people watch the entire clip.
The points made by the CEO of Scripps Health (http://www.scripps.org/) are so important. Yes, America already has a "national health care system" and it's called the EMERGENCY ROOM. By law, no hospital ER can decline to provide care to a patient who has no insurance. As a result, milllions of people without insurance misuse the ER for their primary care needs soley because there is nowhere else for them to go. Almost all hospitals absorb massive costs each year for those patients they assist who never pay for the services they recieve as uninsured patients. Why should non-govt and private organizations be forced to absorb these costs? And in the end, guess who covers these costs? Yes, those who have insurance (through higher premiums). The only way for hospitals to recoup the cost of providing care to people without insurance is to charge everyone else a higher fee. Many people opposed to the public insurance OPTION don't seem to understand the crucial points outlined above.
The flaws in this health care system are so blatantly obvious. It's so extraordinarily frustrating that so many people are opposed to the reforms which aim to correct the worst aspects of this system.
It seems like a fairly balanced presentation.
I hope some people will watch the entire clip.

Sorry CGP. No, I can't view videos, but I thought I had a legitimate question. So much pros anc cons on this issue, I just wanted to know someone we know and trust regarding health care in Canada. I hope you don't think I was trying to funny.
Being America. our government structure and Constitution are very different than any other country. Using Canada, UK, Australia, for comparison has been used here significantly throughout our debates. Therefore, it was a reason for the inquiry. Again, sorry for asking the question but I was being sincere.

It's ok. This is actually a fairly balanced presentation that highlights that both systems have pros/cons.
