TROUTVILLE, Va. — An animal rights group wants to rent a prison building the state plans to close and turn it into the nation's first chicken empathy museum. A People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals official sent a letter Monday to Gov. Tim Kaine asking to rent the Botetourt Correctional Center building in Troutville.

Kaine spokeswoman Lynda Tran said the state doesn't lease to private entities except for cases grandfathered in when it purchases buildings.

PETA spokeswoman Ashley Byrne said the Norfolk-based group thinks a former prison is the ideal setting for exhibits on what it contends is mistreatment of chickens raised for slaughter.

Reiman said the museum also would have displays detailing chickens' habits and intelligence.

I liked PETA better when they did the commercials where they showed how much they disliked fur clothing/coats.

Chicken Empathy Museum. I bet they won't call it the Chicken Ranch. They had meat there. :surprise:

I am a retired vet as everyone knows but I will refrain from discussing PETA as it is worse for my bloodpressure than talking about Obama...really...

In Wydem's case, 'vet' means animal doctor, not military vet, just to be clear. :D

True, but I think your commanders would send you in first to take out the enemy.

You might be surprised at how many people go into Basic with that attitude, and come out the other end...soldiers. It's what they do, and they are very good at it.

Not just ANY chicken museum... a chicken empathy museum.

Glad to know the senseless slaughter of over 9 billion chickens cruelly killed every year in factory farms in this country is something to "giggle" at. Chickens, for the record, are one of the most intelligent birds and have complex social orders. The empathy museum is likely being set up because there is significant scholarship in multiple disciplines, particularly professors of bioethics and legal scholars, that suggests there is an alarming similarity to what is happening to chickens in factory farms and what happened to Jews, Gypsys and other groups in the Holocaust.

Chickens raised for their flesh, called “broilers” by the chicken industry, spend their entire lives in filthy sheds with tens of thousands of other birds, where intense crowding and confinement lead to outbreaks of disease. They are bred and drugged to grow so large so quickly that their legs and organs can’t keep up, making heart attacks, organ failure, and crippling leg deformities common. Many become crippled under their own weight and eventually die because they can’t reach the water nozzles. When they are only 6 or 7 weeks old, they are crammed into cages and trucked to slaughter.

Birds exploited for their eggs, called “laying hens” by the industry, are crammed together in wire cages where they don’t even have enough room to spread a single wing. The cages are stacked on top of each other, and the excrement from chickens in the higher cages constantly falls on those below. The birds have part of their sensitive beaks cut off so that they won’t peck each other as a result of the frustration created by the unnatural confinement. After their bodies are exhausted and their production drops, they are shipped to slaughter, generally to be turned into chicken soup or cat or dog food because their flesh is too bruised and battered to be used for much else.

Because the male chicks of egg-laying breeder hens are unable to lay eggs and are not bred to produce excessive flesh for the meat industry, they are killed. Every year, more than 100 million of these young birds are ground up alive or tossed into bags to suffocate.

I absolutely loathe PETA, don't get me wrong. But I would never, ever presume to giggle at the suffering of sentient creatures who are born only to be tortured to death for human vanity. Oh yes, it's so funny--tee hee--when egg laying hens have their beaks chopped off to prevent them from pecking each other to death after being crammed into cages so small they can't even spread a wing. And it's even funnier--tee hee-- when male chicks are ground up alive because they can't lay eggs.

If you think laughing at the suffering of other creatures is a moral thing to do, think again. From the looks of this thread, it sounds like an "empathy" museum is exactly what's needed. And when I read threads like this one, it makes me actually embarrased to be a member of the human species.

Nor I...and yes, the chicken industry, both egg and meat, has a long way to go to make conditions better and more humane but PETA and I are not a good mix.

male chicks are ground up alive because they can't lay eggs.
And many go to zoos for "live" feeding to birds of prey as well.

As usual, you and I are on the same page.

PETA completely sucks, and I'm truly sorry if saying that offends some vegetarians on this board.

It's appalling to see the lack of education/awareness when topics like this come up. There's NOTHING funny about the way chickens on factory farms live and die. A little empathy for their plight would be a really, really good thing.

Thankfully at least one person got my joke. I was laughing at PETA not the stinkin' chickens! Pundits *used* to talk about the Republicans having a branding issue. PETA has a serious "brand" issue. They really should change their name and start over.
