A public awareness campaign in Florida aimed at encouraging people to discuss the problem of rape is upsetting some parents, especially those with young children. (Sept. 18)

The controversy? Or having such a billboard?

My immediate reaction was good! If it opens up a dialog and makes everyone more aware, fine. I can see how some parents might be upset but at the same time, kids also need to be aware about predators, etc.

The controversy? Or having such a billboard?

Both, although I was more refering to the billboard. FL can't stop doing weird things! Are there not better ways to educate people about rape then billboards? I think so.

Are these new billboards? I've seen them before in drives through Florida. But maybe not the "talk about it" part.

Am I missing something? WHAT language are opponents complaining about? The word "rape"? There's no other verbiage on the sign that I can see anyone complaining about.

So it says "sex without consent is rape"--which is true--and "talk about it, prevent it"--a very good idea, in my opinion. And they're upset because elementary school kids are seeing it? Guess what? Elementary school kids are RAPING other kids. If they're old enough to be DOING it, they're old enough to read that it's WRONG.

Can you imagine the look on mom or dad's face when little Jane comes home and asks "what is sex and how do you consent to it?"

Perhaps the health department should do some sex abuse prevention classes in these elementary schools before they post the billboards. Maybe the billboards are only conveying a partial message, especially if children are part of their target audience. I could understand where the sudden appearance of the billboards near schools might upset parents. But the content should be anything but controversial.

I'm fine with it. I knew what rape was in 3rd grade.

Woah! Just as I pressed play on the YouTube video, Nirvana's Rape Me began playing in my music player!
