View Full Version : Guess what I got called today?

First a little background for those who don't know: I'm a native Californian who lived out of state for a long time, and returned home in July 2006. Immediately prior to that I was living in Dallas--where I got used to having nasty notes left on my windshield (Texans apparently took exception to my anti-Bush bumper stickers), being told by merchants that "we don't want YOUR KIND of people here!", and so on. So imagine my glee at returning home to the beautiful, BLUE state of California where I've had nothing but high-fives and "I LOVE your bumper stickers!" Until today.
Today I got called "YOU DAMN LOWLIFE!!" It actually took a moment for it to register that the voice shouting from the car next to me (which had been behind me) was shouting AT ME.
I only have two stickers on my car right now:
http://images.cafepress.com/product/211613271v16_240x240_Front.jpg (http://www.cafepress.com/saproducts.211613271)http://images.cafepress.com/product/105806885v18_240x240_Front.jpg (http://www.cafepress.com/saproducts.105806885)
so there's a 50/50 chance that the idiot who shouted this at me disliked the anti-Bush sticker or the pro-Hillary one...or both? My first thought was that he's an Obamabot, but I guess it's just as likely that he's a Republican who LIKES Bush and, of course, despises Hillary.

Ya know, Californians are usually pretty mild. Born and raised in SoCal. Layed back state really.....untill I put a sticker on my car that said "Worst President Ever". I got the nastiest note one day while parked at the local "vons". I mean it was pornographic! (Seriously, the note said I perhaps would like to get down on my knees and su*k Bill's D*ck too.) No doubt left by a fundi and I saw more of the middle "digit" than I think I've ever seen in my life.
I realized at that moment that there are some really crazy fundamentalists in all crowds that feel like they can bully you into submission. And I have to say that before 911, that tactic worked successfully. But, not now. And not ever again......Because "I'M MAD AS HELL! AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE ANYMORE". Not from anyone! And besides, I'm too old to give a rats ass.

I've been called everything in the book for supporting Hillary, but I was used to being bullied growing up for being gay. My parents enrolled me in good old fashioned karate classes to learn to defend myself, and the first time I had to defend myself with it was the last time. No one wanted to be the one that got beat up by a "faggot". (sorry for using that word but I think you understand why I did. I hate the word too.) What I have had thrown at me for supporting Hillary is nothing compared to that.

I get a lot of smiles and thumbs up....no middle fingers yet!:D:D:D:D

What amazes me--if it WASN'T a Repub and, therefore, had to be an Obama-ite--is that he's supporting a racist, intolerant cult leader and he has the...*cough*...AUDACITY to call *ME* a lowlife? Huh?!
Oh well, in the not quite 2 years I've been back home, I've had LITERALLY countless positive comments about my stickers--it's gotten so predictable that I can usually see it coming--so I'm not going to let this one nutcase get to me. I guess I was just more stunned than anything else, since I thought I'd left that kind of intolerant hatred behind in Texas. (And I REALLY put myself out there when I lived in Dallas! I marched in the gay pride parade (with the HIV/AIDS clinic where I volunteered), had Clinton/Gore signs in my far north Dallas yard, participated in anti-fur/animal rights protests...the list just goes on and on. I must have a thing for pissing people off! ;) )
No one wanted to be the one that got beat up by a "faggot". (sorry for using that word but I think you understand why I did. I hate the word too.)I USED to hate the word faggot, until my gay friends started using it to refer to each other, and--as an honorary lesbian :D--I've had no problem using it in that way either. The reasoning is that faggot was used as a way to denigrate gays, and by taking the word back and using it amongst themselves, gays take control of it and make its use as an insult ineffective. (I also have black friends/relatives who use "the 'N' word" in that way to each other, but that's not something I feel comfortable doing. Don't ask me why, because I really can't explain the difference.)

OK, I'm not even going to tell you of the lesbian jokes I've heard in my "all male" dominated industry when it came to talking about BUSH. It became too vile. I mean the total misogany thing was almost unbearable. And when they would say things to me that were off the scale? I would ask them if they would say the same things to their daughters or wifes. That would generally nutralize them. (sorry for the spelling) And then I always add.....do you think your wife would like to be with a woman? Do you think she's ever thought about it?
That usually does it.

As a Northern Californian, let me correct you. Most Southern Californians are "laid-back". Other then the Bay Area (SF & surrounding areas), we've got a lot of opinionated Republicans and rednecks (a lot are both) up here.
In 2004, I was with other military veterans campaigning for (ahem) Kerry and had gatorade thrown at us, mooned and flipped off so many times I couldn't count - once by a kid aged 10-12. Made me proud . .

I'm betting money it was an Obamanut. I live in socal, which is Republican country. Actually, it's right-wingnut country, but they don't yell things out car windows at you, at least not in my experience.
Given what I've seen of Obama supporters online, I'm surprised he didn't drive you off the road. That article in Salon.com about sexism that I read in another thread describes the straight white guys seething anger every time Hillary wins a primary. The way it's described you can feel their hatred. What in God's name are they going to do when she wins the nomination? We may all need six shooters!

The first sticker is ok. the second one, you are actually not only creating a nasty sexual image, but putting down Bill, eventhough you may not see it that way. Personally, I would be embarrassed as all get out if Bill were to see that sticker. I don't think Bill and Hillary would want anyone to mention a blowjob in order to put down Bush. Upstanding people are not going to comment, just find it offensive, but the kind of people Obama has brought out of the woodwork, the lowlifes and jerks, they will most likely say something. Just my opinion.

I was the target of hate over a bumpersticker I had on my car a few years ago. I live in Upstate, NY and have always considered my area of the country diverse and open-minded...at least I thought so. The bumper sticker was this one:
http://www.northernsun.com/images/thumb/0212.jpg
I was stalked by a crazy as I was coming off of the highway here in Rochester. He confronted me at the post-office and called me a "murderer" and backed me up against a wall. I literally almost wet myself, I was so scared. I was 25. I am non-confrontational and knew this guy was a nut-bag, so I said to him, "you are right, I am wrong, please forgive me. Thank you for showing me the error of my ways." He left. I didn't get his license plate. This was the week after the abortion Dr. in Buffalo was gunned down in his home, so I was extremely shaken. My husband removed the bumper sticker because he worried for my safety.
This is the reason that I will back Hillary until my dying day. I felt defeated and like a coward that day. FEAR and INTIMIDATION is how crazys like Obama and the GOP get their way. I look up to Hillary because she stands up to the nut-cases, she is the woman I wish I could be.

This happened in the middle of the day in front of at least a dozen people. He man-handled me when he put me up against the wall. NO ONE came to my aid. It was the most devastating thing to ever happen to me. My husband was wild! This was before cellphone cameras and even before we had our first cell phone. I still check the parking lot of this post office for the white pick-up truck the guy was driving. Some of the stories here deal with just verbal abuse while other deal with actual physical confrontations. I guess the risk could involve anything.
When I first moved to Texas in 05, I had a "Kerry/Edwards" sticker on my bumper. One day I parked outside a business in Rosenberg (Houston suburb) and when I came back, one of my side mirrors was knocked out (there was red paint on it, which matched the truck parked next to me when I first went into the building) and my "Kerry/Edwards" sticker looked as it if had been slashed with a knife... along with parts of my bumper.
I'm just glad I didn't have to confront the aggressor personally, especially if he was armed.

SoCal4Hillary, I think it's the sticker you believe to be anti-Bush that the person was shouting at you about. The guy's a nutter to be yelling out the window for sure! Thank goodness he just drove on and left you alone!
I have to say though that I"m not a fan of that sticker as I don't consider it so much anti-Bush as anti-logic. I get what it's trying to say, but it doesn't really work because it implies that Bush getting a bj from anyone anywhere would be cause for Impeachment and that's absurd! And while the GOP majority in Congress certainly went overboard in Impeaching, having the President of the US misusing his power to receive sexual favors while in Office and while in the White House itself is a serious situation. Even while it pales in comparrison to all that the Bush/Cheney Crime Family have gotten away with, non-the-less, it's still unacceptable. But again, that's just my take on it.
Optixmom, I'm soo sorry for what you went through. That's certainly a frightening thing and I'm glad you're okay. Someone physically manhandling you is unacceptable and I'm sorry nobody came to your defense!
I once had two stickers on my car when I was in college... "Blessed Be" and "Witches Heal".
One day while driving, I was in the right lane on a busy street with slow-going traffic and this car kept honking it's horn behind me. When the lane stopped due the light turning red, the honking still continued. I looked in the rearview mirror and there were a middle-aged couple both holding their hands up fingers crossed like a cross. Thats why they were honking all that time...they wanted me to notice them, to show their hatred of a different mythology over theirs, as if their mythology was any better (or even made any sort of sense). They followed me for miles until I finally was able to turn off and speed away.
I remembered I laughed and wished I had some magic shop smoke pellets at the time. But it also pissed me off as, in a way, I was being harrassed by them. But then I wasn't really surprised because to me, that's what too many people who believe in one big male invisible being do anyway.
Although I dismiss too. If I see an anti-woman sticker or pro-Bush or war, I think "idiot" and dismiss them. I don't verbally do or say anything to them, because they can think whatever they want. But I still dismiss and think them an imbicile.

I don't think some people would find the word "damn" was as offense (unless of course it was in the phrase "God D**n America...lol) as the word "blowjob" for their children to hear. Also, when I see that phrase, even though I know it is anti-Bush, it makes me cringe because to me it is a reminder of the whole Lewinsky fiasco and the Republicans bring that issue up ad nauseum already.

Well, you guys have given me something--a lot of things!--to think about. Regarding the blowjob sticker: I've had that on my car for [at least] a year, and all I've EVER gotten for it is praise, high-fives, and other positive feedback. However...
When I went to that Hillary fundraiser in Beverly Hills earlier this month, I had this crazy "what if" vision that ran through my head: In it, Hillary [for some unknown reason] decides to come out to see my bumper stickers (look, I was intoxicated by the awesomeness of the evening!); she, of course, LOVES the Clinton/Bush one...but then it hits me that while *I* (and all the people who've praised that sticker) considered the blowjob one to be strongly anti-Bush, SHE would be shocked/appalled by it. After all, it is an implied reference to her husband.
But, honestly, it never occurred to me that maybe it should go. After reading some of the comments in this thread, I think I've changed my mind. I normally change stickers very frequently, keeping things current, but as I said I've left that one on for about a year, only changing the one on the other side of my rear window. I'll order something from my site and replace the blowjob sticker, as I now believe it may no longer be appropriate. Thank you all for bringing this other perspective to my attention. I never saw it as anything BUT anti-Bush (and, apparently, neither did all the people who've bought that same design on various products from my site--and it's sold a lot), but its time has come and gone.
Optix, I think I would have crapped my pants, not just wet them. I'm so sorry you had to deal with such a frightening nutjob. When my daughter was in college, although she didn't have a car she did have a pro-choice bumper sticker on...I can't recall...a notebook? locker? I'll have to ask her. Anyway, she went to UT Austin, which is about as liberal as Texas gets, yet she caught flack for her "Against abortion? Don't have one!" sticker. So, yeah, they're everywhere...

SOCAL.....Your "what if" vision is just too funny! Personally, I think it takes a lot of "f-you" attitude to be "out there" with the bumper stickers anyway! I admire you for that! I am always concerned that someone will key my car simply because my politics do not agree with theirs. Just call me whimp...I do have a new car though! I think it is funny, that you did not realize the other meaning behind your "blowjob" sticker...the one I had kept in my arsenal was..."Please, will someone give Bush a blow job so we can impeach him.":eek:

Dear SoCal:
I recently moved to PA after living in Texas for more than 20 years. It has been a breath of fresh air to get away from the paranoia I lived with for preferring Democratic candidates. I was ostracized at PTA meetings, I think parents frowned upon their kids playing with mine for fear they would catch the Hillary cooties. Seriously, my kids and I got depressed in this oppressive environment where dissent was treated like heresy. Though I live in a "red" county in PA, folks are much more tolerant of diversity. I'm glad that you are back in CA where you can breathe freer. But idiots (people who think they have the right to verbally accost others -- especially women who don't "know their place" -- are everywhere. Hope you recover from the start. When I looked in the rear view mirror the other day after dropping my kid off at school, I heard a honk and saw a dad in the car behind me shaking his finger at me as if to say, "I see shameful you. Look out." I guess becuase I had the audacity to place a "God Rules" bumper sticker right next to my "Hillary '08" bumper sticker (snicker. I do that on purpose to blow the minds of right wing religious fundamentalists!!! I am a follower of Jesus AND I love Hillary....
Sorry for the trailing note...
Love your bumper stickers. I haven't worked up the courage yet -- but I'm getting there... You are my inspiration.

How great it is to read the discussions that take place here and see that nobody gets offended! SoCal you saw that the comments about your bj sticker were constructive and showed concern for you and for Hillary and listened. HIGH FIVES TO EVERYONE HERE! The more I come here the more impressed I am!
Optix, I am so sorry to hear about your ordeal, I hope that you never again have to go through anything like that!
Those crazies out there getting so angry had better vote for Hillary because they will need a health care plan like hers after they all stroke out!
Now I'd better get to work! Thanks everyone - I love you guys!

I felt defeated and like a coward that day. FEAR and INTIMIDATION is how crazys like Obama and the GOP get their way. I look up to Hillary because she stands up to the nut-cases, she is the woman I wish I could be.
I'm chiming in with the rest of you all.... You were not cowardly that day. It takes a great deal of stregnth and bravery to display your personal thoughts and beliefs like that. (PS- I would have removed it too, if something like had happened to me!) Especially when it is apparant that the so-called "pro-life" people are some of the scariest, most hateful people on earth. You know the ones I'm talking about. The ones that shoot gynocologists outside clinics, and hunt them down, and bomb health care facilities. They are down right nasty, evil people. I have a Planned Parenthood in my neighborhood, located on the corner of a busy main street. They stand out there with their grotesque signs every weekend, all with hateful, disgusting mottos. Children and their parents cross that intersection hundreds of times during the weekend on their bikes and in strollers. It fills me with such rage to see it, and frequently has ruined a perfectly, beautiful Northern California weekend for me. I saw somewhere that one Planned Parenthood in another town is doing a program called "Pledge a Picket". Everytime you see these nut-bags out there, you pledge a certain amount of money for each sign you see. And you give it to Planned Parenthood! Take that, ********! I've been meaning to speak to the PP near me about doing the same thing.
Sorry, I went a little off topic to vent. But I was sooooo affected by hearing what happened to you. That bastard is probably in jail somewhere for doing the same thing to someone else.
So, this is why I fight for Hillary. She's fighting all of our bullies on our behalf. -Heather

I am surprised by some of the comments about the bay area in CA. I grew up in the bay area in the good ol' Silicon Valley. The area always voted for Democratic for as long as I can remember. I know it did this year too. The only place that voted Obama was the wine country...think they are drinking too much of their wine. LOL A lot of transplants have moved in so maybe times are changing?

Optixmom,
You did the right thing. I don't display on my car at all. I am sure that something like that will happen to me. That was one of many reasons why the protest was so important to me. Women, gay, lesbian, children have been pushed around and victimized by aggresive men long enough.
No offense to the men. You are not like that or you wouldn't be here. We ALL have to learn to get along, and that is one of many reasons why I support Hillary. She thinks of everyone and genuinely cares for all people!! Off my soap box!!

Unfortunately this is the trouble with bumper stickers on policy issues. You loose the ability to introduce the topic gradually and open yourself to extreme reactions. It is different from having say Hillary for President sticker.

It is nice to find people who agree with my politics and views on social issues. I have had to be careful about expressing my views too overtly in the past in the area where I worked.
I taught high school and in a discipline where there could have been a great deal of discussion on social issues in which people have strong views. Even though I have been a feminist all my life, I had to be careful about not allowing discussion of controversial viewpoints in my classroom. We were not allowed to teach about birth control, discuss reproductive rights, etc.
I saw many young women who needed a mentor and a strong influence to help them find their way, to encourage them to do whatever they wanted. I think I did make a difference for some of my students.
I see many things in Senator Clinton that are a compilation of the issues and values that I, and my family of sisters have fought for our whole lives. I was very disappointed when ERA did not get ratified. Just another example of the good ole boys in politics.
I am grateful that my daughter (now 26) is such an independent, strong, feminist! I admire many things about her! I just wish I had had her confidence and spunk to accomplish individual goals when I was 21. I am of the same era as Hillary. It was the exception in that period, and in the area where I lived, for a woman not to marry as soon as you got out of college. In fact, many of the young women I went to high school with, married when they graduated high school...I am so grateful I did not do that! I did go on to grad school after I married and later to do post grad work. I try to help a lot of my social causes monetarily and I do volunteer work now.....Sorry I have gone off here......
There was a thread a few days ago about our daughters and how some of them do not seem to understand the struggle we as parents/mothers have gone through to reach the point of the hard-fought rights that we do have....and they do not necessarily see why we are so pro-Clinton where they may be pro-Obama. Does anyone remember the name of that thread?

I've never seen anything as oppressive as the social/political environment in Texas.
People often ask me why I stayed there as long as I did, since I REALLY never liked it, but that's just the way it worked out. My husband [from Florida] and I met here in California, then ended up moving to various places and landing in Dallas. We never intended to STAY there...but life got in the way.
I'm glad that you are back in CA where you can breathe freer.ME TOO!! :D I always intended to get back here, but to finally be back and starting to feel like it's real...it's a great feeling.
But idiots (people who think they have the right to verbally accost others -- especially women who don't "know their place" -- are everywhere. Hope you recover from the start.Oh, yeah, no problem. If I were to see the moron again I might be tempted--just TEMPTED, mind you--to flip him off and/or shout some choice words at him. But I wouldn't actually do it. For one thing, living in Texas taught me ALL ABOUT road rage and concealed weapons. Besides, I'd like to think I have too much class for that!
When I looked in the rear view mirror the other day after dropping my kid off at school, I heard a honk and saw a dad in the car behind me shaking his finger at me as if to say, "I see shameful you. SoCal you saw that the comments about your bj sticker were constructive and showed concern for you and for Hillary and listened. HIGH FIVES TO EVERYONE HERE! The more I come here the more impressed I am!Pretty cool place, huh? Yeah, I definitely was not offended at all; I LIKE constructive criticism, and seeing a different perspective on the blowjob sticker was really eye-opening for me. All this time I saw it as a clear statement about the hypocrisy of the Republicans, i.e., that they JUMPED at the chance to impeach Bill Clinton for lying about a blowjob, yet they're utterly quiet about all the things Bush has done that MUST be impeachable. Now I see it, as I said before, as something whose time has come and gone. With Hillary fighting in this campaign, I don't think it's appropriate for me to display something that rehashes the OTHER Clinton's woes. (But I still like its point that Bush SHOULD be impeached...but the Repubs--remarkably!--aren't clamoring for that.)
Slightly off-topic, but not worthy of its own thread: I had an appointment today with my rheumatologist. Now, I don't know her politics, but I wasn't concerned about wearing my "It takes a Clinton to clean up after a Bush" button--I figured, hey, she won't be coming at me with a needle or anything! But I forgot to take into account that it was time for lab work again...and the phlebotomist WOULD be coming at me with a needle. So I sat there in the lab chair as she was preparing to take blood, thinking to myself "I hope she's a Hillary fan...and if not, I hope she's professional about this!" (She was professional; I still don't know if she's a Hillary fan...I didn't have the nerve to ask, and she didn't volunteer.)

It occurred to me when I was out yesterday--behind a car with not only an Obama bumper sticker, but a HUGE sign in the back window--that I would NEVER, EVER call him out for supporting Obama. Even though...obviously...he's making a very bad choice. I just wonder what possesses people to say/do nasty things to people whose opinions differ from theirs.

I agree I was offended by that sticker also. er also it takes two to play that kind of game. Monica, it was said, told all her pals she was taking knee pads with her to Washington. And dear old Barbara Walters sticks up for her all the time.

I posted this yesterday, but it has gone missing...I had posted it before I read the whole thread, and it was nothing as serious as physical battery or vandalism, but I have seen SoCal go very un-laid back over my lifetime, too. It's like some people feel they have a constitutional right to be nasty to other people. I was in a surf shop in Huntington Beach a couple of summers ago, getting some change for the car park around the corner. I had just lit a cigarette, and the register was a few feet from the totally open entryway to the store. The fifteen yr old so and so behind the counter selling pot leaf sitickers tells me to put out the cig!! Orders me to. So irritating. I should have told him to go smoke a bowl, but he had my ten dollars in his hand so I waited. Didn't put out the fag though!! (ps, I don't smoke any more which is good because I am pregnant :) )

He could have called the police and you'd have been fined--we have VERY strict anti-smoking laws here (thank goodness--when I left Dallas in 2006, it was STILL okay to smoke indoors, and I mean even in places like restaurants!).
(ps, I don't smoke any more which is good because I am pregnant :) )YAY! On both counts. Congratulations on being pregnant AND on being a former smoker. :D

Got a definite whiff of anti-smoking off you, it's important to have strong views, so in that way we still have s/t in common. I can't stand the smell of them at all now. Have you been to HB lately? Sometime in the late 80's it turned into a seaside mall, all the character left. It's **** now.
I suppose I should adjust my mentality so that I can accurately appreciate the caring the lad was showing me. He cared for my lungs and health so much that he acted like a total SOB. And for a person he's never met. Thank goodness there are real good people like him around making sure that those that don't take care of themselves get taken care of...one way or another.
All that aside, why legalise cannabis (pot), or advocate its legalization by selling pot leaf adorned stickers, when smoking things, even filtered, is real bad for a person?
That was the point of it. Just in front of a counter with stickers advocating the use of an illegal drug, with all of the outdoors to protect him from my cancerous cloud, my momentary use of a legal one was a big enough deal in 'laid back' CA to 'call the police' If I gave a word of back talk to the High School age employee.
BTW, your blow job stickers are pretty offensive, but only because I haven't yet explained to my 10 yr old what one is. It's surely just as offensive as me walking into the front of a shop with no front wall or doors with a lit cigarette for the few moments it takes to get change...
See we can all get along just fine

I don't know if you live in L.A proper, but we have now been voted #1 rudest city in the states. OVER NYC. How proud we all are:o
welcome to the new world, try not to let it upset you, you told them how you felt, NO BUSH, YES HILLARY, they have to deal with that, the world is not going to stop because they are ignorant of the problems going on today
i've told many people, if EVERYONE WHO VOTED FOR BUSH, VOLUNTEERED FOR IRAQ, EVERY SOLDIER OVER THERE COULD COME HOME, AND THOSE WHO FEEL IT IS RIGHT, BUSH LOVERS, THEN LET THEM SPILL THEIR BLOOD BY GOING TO IRAQ IF THEY FEEL IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO , funny, these people shut up right away, REMEMBER YOU CANNOT GET A LITTLE BIT PREGNANT, YOU CANNOT VOTE FOR SOMEONE LIKE BUSH, NOT ONCE BUT TWICE, THEN STATE YOU ARE AGAINST THE WAR, IT'S A PACKAGE DEAL
p.s. i live in nyc, born, raised, schooled, i don't look at it as being rude, its a tough world, its a tough city, it will make you or break you, and its been that way since its inception like it, love it, or LEAVE IT, its only the outsiders that think of it as rude, here, its how you deal with it, and get around it
MAKE UP YOUR MIND PA.

HILLARY = JOBS, HEALTH CARE, EDUCATION, TAXES, IRAQ, IRAN
