On January 15, 2008, nearly 600,000 Michigan Democrats went to the polls to make their voices heard in the Democratic Presidential primary. The popular vote in Florida and Michigan has been counted, certified by election officials in each state, and officially tallied by the secretary of state in each state.

Our votes cannot be ignored. We will not be disenfranchised.

The DNC’s refusal to count our votes and seat our delegates according to the ballots cast on January 15 compromises our civil liberties and our voting rights. This decision affects the rights of ALL Michigan residents regardless of political affiliation.

Michigan, let your voice be heard.

Join together in a grassroots effort to ensure voting privileges and protect the right to vote for future generations.

Demand that our votes be counted and delegates seated based on the Jan. 15 poll results or that a new Michigan primary take place.

Demand that the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee take the necessary steps to ensure the voices of the people of Michigan are heard and its delegates are seated at the Democratic convention this summer.

Where: Michigan State Capitol Building, Lansing, Mi.

Date: Thursday, April 17, 2008

Time: 12:00 PM

Michigan matters! Preserve Democracy. Our votes cannot be ignored!

YES! Rock the steps of the Michigan Capital. Your voices WILL be heard!

And your votes already do count. Nobody has the right to take them away. *wink

Love that picture. I should get a flag pin, use a black marker to dot out 2 of the stars, and hand it to Obama. I bet he'll wear it on his lapel. lol

Good luck with the rally if you plan on attending!

Thank goodness for college kids! My daughter sent an invitation to 300 people on facebook. I don't know how to use facebook myself:eek:

I sent out a HUGE email campaign to Democratic groups, businesses, Mi politicians, gay and lesbian groups, the Detroit news, Free Press, observer, Jewish News...One of our forum members, Amy, hooked me up with a great person with campus connections.

We're meeting on the South steps of the Capitol building and I'm excited!
I'm taking my younger kids out of school for this event so they can protest.

We've been painting signs all week...lots and lots of signs. Paint is everywhere but it's been exciting to do it with the kids.

The Michigan rally was posted under events on the Clinton website. I sent an email of this to rapid responders but they didn't pass it on. About 2 weeks ago I found out that the rally wasn't advertised very well. The organizer is very busy with Hillary's campaign. I offered my help and got involved with some people and we did a big email facebook and myspace campaign to give the rally a boost. How big it's going to be is really up in the air. It could be a small group protesting or a group of hundreds.lol. I have no idea :)
What I do know is that there are several groups putting on rallies at the state capitol building for various events. There's going to be live bands a huge health fair and I think a MSU rally for something not related to politics. If the media doesn't come for our group they'll be there for sure for some of the other rallys going on. This is going to be pretty fascinating because it's the first show of protest in Michigan over the vote. I'm extremely excited for this. In the worst case scenario it has the potential to be the catalyst for future Michigan "Count MY Vote" protests. I'm in a suburb of Detroit and will drive an hour and a half to get to Lansing tomorrow. I'll be there about an hour early because I have to pick up the permit.

I think this is so important and I hope everyone who can come out will do so. It also should be a blast! I had a blast just watching our New York group march so I'm looking forward to doing this tomorrow.

Thank you IJane. I am so disappointed I can't be there (daughter has a school event at 10:30). I know several of the state legislators and I would have loved to have harassed them on this! I had seen a notice for the 14th a few weeks ago, but since I heard nothing back, I didn't think it was happening. I'm part of a Michigan for Clinton group on facebook and it wasn't posted there, but maybe facebook is so big that we all can't get every notice!
Please know I appreciate you doing this effort and it's about time we spoke up! I hope you get a good size group and good luck! Thank you very much.

I just saw this tonight. I wish I had seen it sooner. I have two appointments tomorrow. I will see what I can do about getting them rescheduled. There was a post about Carl Levin before on another thread. I did not read much of it. I think it had to do with a letter someone had received from him.

I have always supported Carl Levin and Debbie Stebanow. They have been positive about most of the issues I value. I call both of their offices on a regular basis. Is Levin a super delegate? I think he is. Does anyone know for sure?

I am tired and I have got to go to bed. I have been staying up way too late the last few nights.

I plan on going to this rally, I'll look for you. I'll probably be wearing my Hillary button. I live just north of Lansing less than a half hour away.

I had the same problem when contacting the event host posted on Hillary's site about advertising for it, most of my suggestions were blown off by him, even simple things like an official flyer.

I plan on printing out our Seat Our Delegates.com Petition to bring with me, that Piper and I have worked hard on. (Please note: ALL petitions count and are important)
Here is the link to a PDF of it if anyone is interested in doing the same thing to help us gather more signatures:
Download Petition for Printing [PDF] (http://www.seatourdelegates.com/tmp1.pdf)

YES! to a new Michigan group. Already on it. I am in contact with the guy that is helping us on our Seat Our Delegates website from here in Michigan. He wants me to build him a Michigan based website immediately, he's going to register for a domain today. I'm more than interested in helping to organize more rallies. I have some good ideas up my sleeve for them. I've also registered a couple more blogs this week that I'm fixing up.

See you at the rally!

Protesting is exciting!

When I grow up I want to be a professional protester :D

We were a very small group...like, really small, but we were effective. The event organizer didn't bother to show up for the protest but a BIG thanks to ShezZK for showing up. It was very nice to meet her. We're going to work together to do this again because it's wildly important for both Michigan and Florida and it was a blast..lol..Well, it was! The very good news is that we were photographed by at least 3 different photographers, one was the Detroit News! He was very good to us and I'm thrilled at the idea that our protest posters are going to be in the news. I'd like to believe that a protest picture in the Detroit News will encourage people to start speaking up. I think Michigan has been quiet about this because they think that our delegates will be seated ultimately. The thing is, it's not about them getting seated but about HOW they get seated. I don't think the people are considering that.

I took a cue from Florida's upcoming rally and made this about civil liberties and democracy rather then Hillary. We brought a ton of signs to handout to people that might not bring one but I left all my Hillary signs at home for this.

Sign making was a riot. They were all made in red, white, blue and black paint. There were a lot more signs then people to hold them so we rotated them. Here's a few:

*MY VOTE COUNTS!
*NO 50/50 SPLIT!
*NO JANUARY VOTE = NO NOVEMBER VOTE
*TAKING AWAY MY VOTE MAKES ME BITTER
*TYPICAL DEMOCRAT WANTS HER VOTE TO COUNT
*MICHIGAN AND FLORIDA THE NEW CUBAS
*1920 WOODROW WILSON GAVE WOMEN THE VOTE , 2008 OBAMA TOOK IT AWAY FROM THEM (A personal favorite:))
*TIME TO PLAY 'LET'S MAKE A DEAL' YOU GIVE ME MY NOVEMBER VOTE AND I'LL GIVE YOU MY JANUARY VOTE

etc..etc..etc..Will send on Detroit News picture!

Ok, this is Ijane, passing the torch to Florida. GO FLORIDA!!

Let me tell you what: iJane ROCKS. What a Goddess. It was fabulous meeting her, and her friend/brother/kids she brought along. We have an A-1 Class Activist who went above and beyond the call of duty.

We talked about planning another one in May in the Detroit area, and another one in Lansing. As many as it takes all over the state. We need to Wake Michigan Up, Turn Up the Heat and Turn America Around.

Calling all Michigan members to join up with us to start a new group to get us hooked up and things going. We'll start a new thread very soon to brainstorm and do some planning. We need to check the calendar for other events scheduled and work around that. Please let us know what dates you think would be suitable...

Maybe there could be a sticky so people know about the protests in time to make arrangements to join in???

I went to Detroit last year for Wrestlemania and I admit if your by ford field and commerica it looks like a subburb but if you get 2-3 miles away from it it looks like a old war zone. I didnt have problems there but me not being familiar with the area I am not sure I would wander around at night. Especially when your protesting near a bigot pastor

I didnt have problems there but me not being familiar with the area I am not sure I would wander around at night.

I'm tired today and I'm not thinking straight. I was thinking a protest in terms of Jeremiah Wright which I'd only feel comfortable protesting downtown in a racially mixed group, rather then a protest in terms of the vote. Sorry!

I used to live in Detroit and I know my way around. There's a lot of fun stuff to do in Detroit and I always feel safe and a part of the city when I'm down there. I would feel very comfortable protesting the Mi/Fl vote downtown outside of Cobo Hall. That I would do. We wouldn't even have to call the media because they'll already be there. I think it's a very good idea.

I agree that the whole press corps will be at this event, and I also agree you have nothing to fear with going to downtown detroit in front of Cobo - no biggie there - BUT I would be very careful about doing a protest at this event. It would definitely have to stay within the theme of MI votes being counted. I would NOT do anything related to Rev. Wright! IJane is right - you'll be killed!
Normally I go to this event, but I refuse to go this year (it also helps that I'm out of town! :p)
Sorry I can't help you with this - I'll be in PA this weekend, then off to DC next weekend. I can pass the word for you, although I can guarantee you that most folks around here (Detroit and suburban detroit) would be fearful of doing any sort of protest at the NAACP dinner, as we all work and play with the people that are organizing this event. Sorry to be a buzzkill.:(

Attention Michigan Members!!

Blame JMS825 for this...A RALLY IS BORN! :D

The idea of Cobo happened to be a brilliant one. The media is going to be there and I'm sure there will be nationwide coverage, important Michigan people will be there, and the police will be there. This is to good to pass up.

This is all about the Michigan/Florida vote. No protesting obama, no protesting Wright and No protesting the NAACP.

I'll call downtown Monday to find out what they require (if anything) to rally...at Cobo...on April 27....

I'm changing my will and making jms825 the guardian of my 4 children in the event I don't make it home from the rally. I encourage anyone who wants to get involved to do the same. I'm sure jms825 would feel honored :D
