I heard Obama say he visited Trinity after being asked by preachers why he didn't attend church when he was organizing for them. Obama said he saw the work Trinity was doing for HIV/AIDS and Prison ministries. But he said twice as far as I remember that the HIV ministry inspired him so he joined Wright's church.

Wright's church did not have a HIV/AIDS ministry when Obama joined them.

I know some in the gay and HIV/AIDS communities will stand up for Wright, but people like me were fighting the black churches' lackluster response way back when. They came late to the fight because of their homophobia...the fear and loathing of gays in the Black Church community is/was horrific. They allowed many of their own to be thrown away when they got ill, because of fear, loathing and ignorance...and to see Obama act like he joined Trinity for what they were doing when they weren't...what were they doing?

What was Wright/Trinity doing about HIV/AIDS before 1993? Did black folk in Chicago get spared AIDS pre-1993?

I have issues with the Black Churches and have for years. The Black community relied heavily upon them in a dire time of need and they fed the ant-gay homophobia that fed the neglect many black people I knew well, faced. They ALL died while being shunned by their own because of ignorance, fear and loathing.

I always make it a point to face down people who praise those who shunned the ill when it was almost popular to do so. Ignorance, fear and loathing was/is understandable, but not without responsibility.

Black churches have done heroic and admirable things, but their response to the HIV/AIDS crisis is not on those lists.

Age 26 (1987) -- First trip to Kenya. After he met Rev.Wright, probably influenced by Wright and TUCC. Note Wright is a muslim turned christian.

Age 45 (Aug 2006) - Third trip to Kenya - Also went to South AFrica, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Chad. How it came to this is puzzling. I was so proud early on to see Hillary and Barack battling it out. But when the attacks got heavy on the Clintons and all around them I noticed there was less to Obama than I originally thought.

The attacks made me look closer at what was happening. It's like 'follow the money' only it was follow the reasoning. It became clear to me that Barack had very little substance and his message was in danger of being parsed. So when you questioned them it was "the old politics" or the "silly" season.

From Wright and others, Obama learned that part of his problem as an organizer was that he was trying to build a confederation of churches but wasn't showing up in the pews on Sunday. When pastors asked him the inevitable questions about his own spiritual life, Obama would duck them uncomfortably. A Reverend Philips put the problem to him squarely when he learned that Obama didn't attend services. "It might help your mission if you had a church home," he told Obama. "It doesn't matter where, really. What you're asking from pastors requires us to set aside some of our more priestly concerns in favor of prophesy. That requires a good deal of faith on our part. It makes us want to know just where you're getting yours from."

After many lectures like this, Obama decided to take a second look at Wright's church. Older pastors warned him that Trinity was for "Buppies"--black urban professionals--and didn't have enough street cred. But Wright was a former Muslim and black nationalist who had studied at Howard and Chicago, and Trinity's guiding principles--what the church calls the "Black Value System"--included a "Disavowal of the Pursuit of Middleclassness.'"

The crosscurrents appealed to Obama. He came to believe that the church could not only compensate for the limitations of Alinsky-style organizing but could help answer the nagging identity problem he had come to Chicago to solve. "It was a powerful program, this cultural community," he wrote, "one more pliant than simple nationalism, more sustaining than my own brand of organizing."

In my thread starter post, I link to the Wikipedia account of Obama's marriage and graduation, and from Trinity church's site, I link to when THEY say they started an aids ministry.

My whole point is that Obama says he joined Trinity because of two major reasons...he listed the HIV/AIDS work of Trinity alongside the prison ministry. Two very honorable ministries.

Problem as I saw it was the fact that most black churches were late to HIV/AIDS work because of homophobia. Barack's spiritual dad/Wright may have come out against homophobia as a way of getting his flock comfortable dealing with AIDS, but I felt there was more to this. There is.

The ad angered many in the gay community, who objected to the ad’s unspoken indictment of black men who have sex with both men and women. What is necessary, they say, is to challenge the prejudice that compels many men to keep their intimate relationships with men secret.

Author Chris Bell, who tested positive for HIV when he was 23, says the black community isn’t yet ready to address sex between men as openly as it should. “There’s always a fine line between what you can and cannot do,” he says, “but there is no line between who can and can’t get HIV.”

‘On the down low’
“Men on the down low” is an expression heard often in discussions of HIV and AIDS in the black community. The phrase refers to heterosexually identified men who have sex with men on the “down low”—hiding their sexual relationships from their friends, families, and, most importantly, wives and girlfriends. The phenomenon is more common than many might think. One study published in the April 2002 edition of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes sheds light on the sexual behaviors and identities of a select sample of young black men in Los Angeles County. Among men who identified themselves as heterosexual, 31 percent of those who were HIV-positive and 16 percent of those who were HIV-negative reported having had anal sex with men. In the same sample, 46 percent of the HIV-positive men and 37 percent of the HIV-negative men also reported having had anal sex with women with “infrequent condom use.”

The black press and entertainment industry have sensationalized this phenomenon, which has become the subject of novels and TV shows, in an effort to attract a black female audience. Black activists seem content to make so-called down-low men the scapegoat, blaming the epidemic’s spread in the community almost entirely on them, however falsely.

Activist and HIV-prevention educator J.L. King, himself formerly a man on the down low, is a popular speaker and author in the black community who talks openly about the down-low phenomenon. King, who appears at conferences around the country, collects fees of up to $10,000 for his talks. His workshop topics include “Five Personality Types of Down-Low Men” and “Down Low on the Internet.” His workshops balance prevention messages aimed at down-low men, the women they sleep with, and the public health providers attempting to reach them.

Still King, through his Web site, www.livingdownlow.com and through his booking agent www.blackspeakers.net, perpetuates the idea that black men who have sex with men are entirely to blame for HIV and AIDS in the black community. King’s biography on www.blackspeakers.net describes him as “a nationally recognized ‘face’ of African American men who, according to the Centers for Disease Control, are the No. 1 reason that African-American women represent 68 percent of new HIV cases.”

Public health advocates disagree with these kinds of assertions.

“The Chicago data do not bear out that the down-low factor is the leading cause of HIV infection,” Munar says. Homophobic outrage at down-low men masks another serious problem, intravenous drug use. Mark Ishaug, executive director of the AIDS Foundation, says the down-low phenomenon is “clearly an issue, and it’s clearly a problem, but it’s not the only problem.” The stress on it “makes it hard to deal with the substance abuse issue, and pushes people into the closet.”

Seldom do discussions of men on the down low address the reasons so many black men choose to stay in the closet in the first place—racism in the white gay community, homophobia in the black community, and societal pressures to have families. And time and money spent on looking at men on the down low represents resources not being spent on looking at the impact of drug abuse.

Number one, it requires us to acknowledge that there is a moral dimension to abortion, which I think that all too often those of us who are pro-choice have not talked about or tried to tamp down. I think that's a mistake because I think all of us understand that it is a wrenching choice for anybody to think about.

The second thing, once we acknowledge that, is to recognize that people of good will can exist on both sides. That nobody wishes to be placed in a circumstance where they are even confronted with the choice of abortion. How we determine what's right at that moment, I think, people of good will can differ.

And if we can acknowledge that much, then we can certainly agree on the fact that we should be doing everything we can to avoid unwanted pregnancies that might even lead somebody to consider having an abortion.

And we've actually made progress over the last several years in reducing teen pregnancies, for example. And what I have consistently talked about is to take a comprehensive approach where we focus on abstinence, where we are teaching the sacredness of sexuality to our children.

But we also recognize the importance of good medical care for women, that we're also recognizing the importance of age-appropriate education to reduce risks. I do believe that contraception has to be part of that education process.

And if we do those things, then I think that we can reduce abortions and I think we should make sure that adoption is an option for people out there. If we put all of those things in place, then I think we will take some of the edge off the debate.

We're not going to completely resolve it. I mean, there -- you know, at some point, there may just be an irreconcilable difference. And those who are opposed to abortion, I think, should continue to be able to lawfully object and try to change the laws.

It is a nuanced answer he gave. He is making all sides think he agrees with them even after he said he was pro-choice. This is what snObama does. Obama is trying to seem reasonable to the anti-choice crowd while saying he is pro-choice.

And in the link to the transcript, Obama talks a lot about HIV/AIDS. Most 'new' politicians do. What sickens me is how they use it. I mean, Obama and his wife took an AIDS test?

They couldn't make any headway in the communities because they were white and Jewish. One pastor asked Obama if he belonged to a church and Obama told him no, and the guy told him that was what he needed to do if he expected to get accepted. That is when he went to Rev. Wright's church.
