From the article:
Quote:
Matilde Martinez, 59, a Puerto Rican-born New Yorker, said she believes Mexican immigrants face much mistreatment.
"It causes me a lot of pain," she said in an INTERVIEW CONDUCTED IN SPANISH. "These people come to work and they do work that the Americans won't do for the little pay they get.".

Perhaps if Matilde Martinez and many other immigrants learned to speak English (like my stepmother did after coming to this country 25 years ago), the manner in which they're treated would be more amicable. At first, like many of those who've moved to this country, my mother's speech was difficult to understand, but she learned the language because it enabled her to better interact with her new stepchildren, fellow citizens, get a job, and go to nursing school.
Immigrants must/should feel free to maintain their cultural identity, but also realize that English is the defacto language of this country. By not learning to speak the language, they're unwittingly fueling preconception and prejudice against themselves.
